One competitive use for Soak you didn't mention: It's used against ghost types on perish trap teams to prevent them from being able to switch out in Shadow Tag.
Also, something that doesn't actually get any use, but a fun interaction: Double Shock can be used every turn with tera electric, since tera overrides all other type changes. You even get the 2x STAB boost every time, provided that you tera'd before using it for the first time.

Some of these moves actually have some uses in the Mystery Dungeon games thanks to the teammate aspect of them. For example in SMD you can bring a Soak user such as Lumineon and then use it on Shedinja (who in the MD games can have more than 1 hp) to make it immune to bosses like Groudon, then have a Transform user like Ditto or Mew use it on them & then basically be unbeatable as the bosses won't have any moves to counter them & will be forced to run away the whole fight or attack until they use Struggle.
Speaking of Shedjina it's actually possible through lots of setup to get Shedjina to be typeless via Burn Up.

    • @brendanboomhour7606

Eh, it's better to put Wonder Guard on an Arcanine via Entrainment, then have Arcanine use Burn Up, cause at least typeless Arcanine can take a hit or two (if Wonder Guard gets bypassed), and won't instantly faint the moment a sandstorm starts up or a status effect that causes damage is inflicted

A fun combo I used to use in the XY era was Doubles Partners Trev and Ninetales, which is also another aspect where Forest's Curse can come into play! With Ninetales setting up Sun with Drought, if you used Forest's Curse on *Ninetales*, you'd now have the not-yet-seen Fire/Grass type, which gave it resistance to neutral out what would normally be Super-Effective hits, and now it had STAB Solarbeams to blast the opponents with as well. Then, if ya needed to really hit the opponent hard, Forest's Curse on the opponents would make them take neutral damage or super-effective damage from Heat Wave from Ninetales!

There's more to it too. So before becoming ghost when they use curse they are targeting themselves due to how the move works with non ghost types.
However if they suddenly become ghost types they will use the ghost variant of curse instead. However since they still had to target themselves due to not being ghost before. This means not only do they lose half their health to inflict curse. But they inflict curse ON THEMSELVES

@@misirtere9836 strictly speaking, it predates terrain _overrides._ the actual mechanic was introduced in the same gen, but outside of _maybe_ battle revolution if i'm remembering correctly, there's never been a way to set the default terrain of a link battle, so it's always been stuck on the normal-type urban terrain ... except, apparently, in gen v, where link battles defaulted to _ground-type_ terrain
that conceptually has interesting applications, actually, since that means pokemon with the fairly exclusive access to nature power actually had access to 32 uses of earthquake in that gen. wonder if that ever got experimented with back then, esp. since that's the kind of niche thing simulators could easily miss for most of the gen's lifespan

Here's an interesting one that would be banned to Anything Goes if applied outside of Legends Arceus: The move Judgement. Specifically, Judgement when used by Arceus with the Legends Plate. What the Legends Plate does is that Arceus starts the battle as a Normal-Type, but whenever it uses Judgement, it changes type to whatever is super-effective against the target, THEN uses Judgement to always hit for super-effective damage. So yeah, a Pokemon with 120 stats across the board only needing a 120-power STAB move to hit EVERYTHING for super-effective damage AND it also changes said Pokemon's type for potential defensive applications. Have fun taking that on!

  • @jarredallen3228
    @jarredallen3228 День назад +3

The best application of Trick-or-Treat is, if you use it on a pokemon using Curse, the added Ghost type changes it to the damage-dealing variant, but keeps the self-target, so your opponent will lose 50% of its max hp to make ITSELF lose 25% of its max hp each turn. Very situational (so it's usually not worth running), but quite strong (and funny) if you can pull it off.

Gen 7 ZU I ran a "type-change" themed team with Protean Frogadier and Kecleon. However, the star of the team was Eviolite Porygon with Toxic/Conversion/Foul Play/Recover. Conversion would make me immune to Toxic while Trace would make me immune to Electivire's Electric STAB, Rapidash's Fire STAB, etc. It was an incredible tank with ridiculous longevity. That's really the only one of these moves I have found extremely useful in competitive play (besides Roost).

I had a Centiskorch in Gen 8 that used Burn Up with an Assault Vest set going as a Trick Room physical sweeper. The trick was that since Centiskorch has such strong Sp Atk naturally, the move is always gonna hit like a truck anyway. Because of that I invest in physical attack, and run Flare Blitz, Lunge, and Power Whip for coverage. With that, I spread his EVs in to maxing out Atk, and split between HP and Def.
I don't really play competitively much, but I ran this against a friend in college who did and swept him. At the time he said he hadn't seen anyone run that, but that was early into SwSh, so I'm sure it's not that unique, but that's basically the only time I've used one of these moves.

A strat I kept running into on showdown ladder back in the day was Pyukumuku who would spam Toxic and Recover who also had Counter just in case you try to taunt it. Worst of all is that if you get cocky and bring in a poison type thinking it can't hurt you, it'll just Soak you and seeing how this was paired alongside heavy hazard spam, switching wasn't the best option even after the soak.

I feel that one very important note was missing for Burn Up and Double Shock. If you Tera into Fire or Electric, you KEEP your typing. I ran Pawmot T-Elec with Choice Scarf on the OU ladder and it did really well. It’s a bit prediction reliant, but you can have Revival Blessing on it to shore up any unintended consequences.

If lanturn (or a better statted water/electric type) had access to soak, you could have a powerful catch-22 combo of soak+volt switch, grabbing momentum off of the opponent's switch out from soak, as they wouldn't want to keep their now-volt switch weak mon in. It could make for a really interesting combo, almost in reverse of the hypothetical magic powder+pursuit combo.

I remember during a double battle I had a pumpkaboo and a charmeleon on the field, and I was getting pretty banged up by my opponent's normal type moves
And then I had the bright idea of using Trick-or-Treat on my Charmeleon to make it immune to those moves, and that won me the battle

Using Roost on Pokemon like Mew and Latias is ideal because of Imprison strategies. Among Pokemon with Imprison, Recover is the most common recovery move, followed by Roost, then Slack Off, and then Soft-Boiled. If you have access to multiple of these moves, you should use the one that is less common (assuming you’re not a flying type).

I do really like the idea of Burn Up on mono-fire types. Turning you into a Pokemon without a typing is a really cool idea defensively, but the fact that you can't use the move again while the effect is active makes it very suboptimal for a Pokemon like Arcanine, who already only has room for 2 offensive moves on a defensive set that would use it like this. Its a great example of 5 move slot syndrome. Reflect Type is probably only a good idea on Mega Latias because the other users can simply use weakness reducing berries to a similar effect. You could argue that the mind games created from Reflect Type is better than a single use Colbur berry, so its definitely not unusable

I'd like to see Z-Conversion come back as a signature move for Porygon-Z. Call it ConverZion, it will change its type to match that of its first move and give it a +1 to one stat based on its type. Elec boosts speed, Psychic boosts Sp.Atk, etc. Each subsequent use will be a +2 to that stat.

I think there would be potential for moves that sharply raised a stat while also adding another type to the user. For example, a move that sharply boosted speed and added Fire to the user would be quite nice, assuming it was a physical attacker who's base typing worked well with the addition of Fire in some way.

With adding a type, can it "add" on top of the same type? Like, could I add grass to a pokemon that is also grass type?
If so, that opens up some interesting play in doubles. You know how you get double STAB if you tera into the same type? If what I mentioned is the case, then you could also have a grass or ghost type, have it Tera into that same type, and have its partner pass over that type with a move, and thus achieve a triple stab boost.
I'm guessing that's not how it works, though

All due respect to the GOAT, but I knew BKC wrote the script when Bellibolt (a bulky electric-type with an ability that gives it a free Charge without the spDef boost when hit, and as a frog it's given Toxic and a lot of wonky moves usually reserved for Water-types) was completely ignored for "No one that uses Soak has any Grass or Electric moves to abuse it with"
It's not a staple in OU but it's one of those guys that can punch above its weight; I can't say I have the competitive chops to back this up, but it might be a LITTLE better than the "I'm burning out on playing the same mons for the same roles all the time, so I'll throw " heat picks that Kev gripes about in his own videos. Maybe it can be a surprise bulky pivot that actually fulfills the role like two tiers above where it is, but I don't know if it's been seen in tournament.
