We actually got so tired of pitchforks, shovels & garden rakes breaking I contacted a guy we bought a shovel from at one of the local festivals a few yrs ago who hand makes the metal parts & uses extremely hard wood for handles which he cuts/shapes/seasons/treats himself. We bought 2 of everything...which wasn’t cheap...but I know someone who bought a shovel from this guy’s dad over 25yrs ago & it’s used heavily daily & looks brand new. They also guarantee their tools. So worth the investment if you can find someone who makes them using the old ways! My guy also includes a jar of the maintenance sealant to apply once or twice a year to the handles just using a cloth. My little great-niece actually left one of the shovel on the concrete behind our truck & my hubs backed over it while the truck was heavily loaded & other than a very light scratch from the rough concrete you can’t tell anything happened! Something similar happened with one of those I believe harden, reinforced synthetic shovel handles & it cracked & splintered badly. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think these may last long enough to be passed down a few generations.
      - I overheard someone tell my guy that he was “crazy” for making tools which last so long bc won’t make much money from repeat customers since they won’t need new tools. Which my guy said that “It’s wrong/immoral to intentionally make something which will break in hopes of selling more as replacements”. Which I 100% agree with! Im pretty sure tool & other companies now days purposely make tools/products which will break in just a few years. Just to help insure they keep making more money.😕🤷🏻‍♀️ If ALL or most manufactures of a product do the same thing by making a product that doesn’t last...not only does it mean people just accept that’s how long that product is “supposed” to last *AND* they can charge extremely inflated prices for any higher quality product they make guaranteed to last longer than the avg current tools.🙄 Even when the cost of making said product is no higher than the cost of the lower quality products they make!! Or *at least* any extra cost making the higher quality products is *far less* than the increase in consumer price. Capitalism strikes again!😒
I *get* wanting to make lots of money but...nowadays it seems like more & more companies are working together to actually *lower* the quality/longevity of various products across the board so that consumers both get used to/accepts that’s just how it’s supposed to be &/or just so consumers don’t have hardly any other options!!😡 IMO it’s morally wrong & bordering on theft when all the manufactures come together to essentially *cheat* consumers out of hard earned money by only producing low quality products! The same applies to sellers who agree to inflate prices for various items across the board!(gas prices are a good example!) If a fair amount of the extra generated profit was going to the workers...it wouldn’t be AS bad. But no...instead workers get less & less paid vacation/sick/maternity leave(esp compared to other countries!) & most companies try to not keep many longterm(thus higher paid) employees as it costs them less to constantly higher & train new employees at lower pay rates.
So it’s only those at the very top of such companies & their top investors which profit. Makes me sick!😡 It’s rapidly getting worse in the US meaning things both cost more & have to be replaced more often! Meanwhile the average income here only increases a tiny bit each year or so. The gap between what the US gov considers a “sufficient living wage/income” aka enough to meet all basic needs and the *Actual* cost of living is *Steadily Growing*!! That’s what happens in a country where Capitalism is regarded as more important than nearly anything else...the rich get richer & nearly everyone else gets poorer.😕😡 Something has got to change soon bc if not we are heading towards having extreme problems.😕
      - Sorry. That’s my rant for the week.😂
      Just so frustrating!🤷🏻‍♀️

@@roguewolf7053 I am not sure making crappy products is a tenet of Capitalism, but I totally agree that quality does not seem the priority. My refrigerator I bought in ‘94 lasted 25 years. It was still going strong until a dang rat chewed it’s refrigerant line in two. My new one was quite expensive and it is about 3 years old and has had the ice maker replaced three times! Kudos to you for finding a craftsman to make your yard tools. Most of mine are around 20 years old and still going strong. There seems to be a larger plan afoot to keep everyone in perpetual financial need due to always having to replace everything from coffee makers to washing machines.

It's called Planned Obsolescence, link below.
Too many corporations & their lobbyists, are in bed with government officials, & feeds the corruption of BOTH.
We need our elected Legislators in Congress to fix/repeal the illegal laws & regulations they enacted. Fat chance of that. 🥺😡
They made corporate entities to be "persons," so they could donate (Bribe) 🤑💰 to the politicians' campaign funds. (& now OBiden is trying to order we the taxpayers pay Six times the amount of each politician's campaign fund donation received, by using govt funds!).
The corporate lobbyists, foreign governments, & fake NGO Charities are giving bribes to the corrupt politicians company-paid meals, resort extravaganzas, cruises, family vacations, trips on corporate planes, commercial airline tickets, objects of high value, 💰🤑, Etc.
Govt & Corporate people (often lawyers) have invented a different kind of "revolving door" when one working in the A Big Pharma corporate lawyer(s) get Congress to approve of their product or service (Ex. FDA approved a 'mandatory' vaccine. The Corp. lawyer goes to work for FDA, to write the regulations for the vaccine's use. BAD REACTIONS, DEATHS result. The lawyer writes FDA regulations for government SECRET FUND for govt. arbitrators to pay claims to victims. FDA establishes FUND that is taxes paid by us! Lawyer goes back to BIG PHARMA Corporation, to work the incoming victims' claim denials. IF the victims' have good lawyers, they'll eventually be shuffled off to FDA for govt. arbitration.)
Think Monsanto + Bayer, Roundup, glyphosate, & victims' cases.

Sweet lady. Please don't "Seriously Sandi" on yourself!! You have to understand: 1. that as a human you have limits. 2. when you push those limits things will happen (tying the barrier to the wrong part of the bunks). 3. your own self talk has the ability to make things better or worse. So when things go wrong, start using better self talk to set yourself up for success! Just saying! We love you, things happen, let it go! You know your family loves you either way - and we do too, so give yourself a break! Try, "I can do better, this won't happen again." Try, "It's dangerous to overspend my energy, I won't do that again." Try anything that makes you feel better - and sets you up for future success, and immediate relief.

Can be portable , and set up on the side of the lambing pen . ..Put straw on the bottom ,or cut off the bottom and utilize the floor of the pen . I had a ewe (on a natural breed every year) giving birth to quads when she was 3,4 and 6 years old. It was a crazy girl but a good mom and so cheecky. I also really noticed how after lambing you could really see how much space those lambs took inside her. (and this with a 10 month old wool coat on) That girl had 2.75 lambs born a year and had 2.5 lambs reach weaning age. She had 8 lambings and we will never forget her :)

Could you set up heat lamps for the winter or do a ventilated poly tunnel over the lambing pen to keep the heat in better during the winter but minimise condensation? Essentially like a mini version of the barn inside the barn, but with maybe the occasional heat source. I think bottle babies in the winter/early spring having a heat source from either a lamp or storage heater might be good as they can't snuggle up to mum for warmth.
It would probably be more pleasant for you too to not be so cold!

And in the corner a headlamp. I even slept on that and it's really warm and dry. It's only when it's not high the pee of the sheep and goats are going into the upper layer. But you always have to put new straw on top. They were always healthy big lambs. I find these lambs always very small. We had texel sheep.

If you do get any lambing early, and weather is too cold, use a heat lamp for the lambs. Ours coped pretty well (am sheep breeder in UK) but occasionally like when we had beast from East, had snow coming in from all sides of the barn, I had to use heat lamps for couple of newborns. As long they dry quickly and get colostrum, you be surprise how tough the lambs can be. Your lambing % is good, well done!

On “Arms family homestead”, Daniel puts out dog kennels that are not put together (two halves) down. Only the baby goats can fit through the opening, they get in there together and cuddle up for warmth. Check out one of the videos from when his goats are giving birth and you’ll see how he does it.

Sandi, my son and I were out of town from 10-9-20 until 10-26=20, visiting family in Arkansas. So, I'm trying to get up-t0-date on videos. I don't know how you keep it all together as well as you do. Of course, I'm a lot older (75) and have severe spinal issues. I admire your work ethic and know that sometimes you just have to chill a little bit. Take care of yourself.

Ok for the winter breeding-if babies are coming early can you make a mini tarp barn type thing with some tarps that will allow you to keep the early group warmer? Because then you could bring heat in and the heat wouldn’t just float to the ceiling. there are some safe space heaters you could use. Don’t despair! There is a solution for every problem :)

    • @bethmccormack5172
      @bethmccormack5172 4 года назад +9

That’s a really good idea. I have a tarp style high tunnel greenhouse that’s 12x12 and it stays warm inside. The only problem I can think of is if it condensates during the day. That might ice on the inside at night and drip water drops on the babies and bedding during the day.

Excellent thoughts!! Whether she uses this idea or not, it's giving her ideas that helps - because she knows the operation and what might and might not work!! Kudos stephloves, Beth McCormack and Serenity TV!

The thing is that the big barn she lambs in is a tarp barn, its not insulated, the problem is that its so cold outside that the barn cools off massively ass well... (it's Canada after all)

Congrats on another great ending to lambing. Ive been around cattle & horses most of my life...Oooo... when they'z ready to do the funkie -k0-madina, iit's oN !! We had a bull, we literally had to take away from the cattle operation & take miles away & put him with all my mares, there wasnt a fence or gate he couldn't clear, yep a jumper, he was naughty.

We were trialling going into the fat lamb market and had a border Leicester ram-a very impressive gentleman he was.well he was to the ladies. There was not a farm fence beyond his high jumping skills. We were constantly returning him t ‘secure’ paddocks. Later we found further evidence of his travels. He was one prolific ram-short lived on our farm.

Perhaps get ready to buy some floor heaters in case of very early births? You can generally get them for $20 apiece, or the 3 feet tall ones for $60. I guess the bigger question would be how to plug them all in and/or where/how to set them up to in the walkway once the babies are born. Yikes!
I hope it all works out, and thank you for that beautiful little Bella baby. Really love the Billies as well. :)

You really are a rare breed my dear. Im amazed every time I watch your videos from your strength and determination . I thought something bad happened from the title so I stopped everything to watch it. I’m just glad it wasn’t too serious and you shouldn’t beat yourself up about it. We are human and entitled to make mistakes. No one is expecting you to be perfect. You run around most days like a chicken that lost its head. Lol! You need a real long vacay! You and the hubby should go away somewhere tropical for a couple weeks. I know that’s nearly impossible for farmers who have to keep the wheels turning at all times but after harvest and lambing, you need to take a break. I’ve seen stress take out strong men from executive positions that suffered and ended up developing into ptsd which some never recovered. My now ex at one time was the best thing in my life until she couldn’t handle reality after a time. It killed me cause I couldn’t do anything about it. Being totally helpless and being pushed away almost broke me entirely.
I would have to remind her to take the some to smell the roses. Life isn’t worth continuously beating up yourself. Find a zen place to just zone out.
Hope you guys have a great weekend,

Years ago we had an old car that had a wire coil that scraped the curb to let you hear/see when you were close enough to the curb. Wonder if there's not something similar you could put on your machine to let you know when you were close to the wall. We do the same in the garage. We hang a ball on a string and when the ball touches the windshield you know you are parked right.

At the end. Their like rabbits. Bella and Cinnamon are adorable. If they were goats it would be a chase and a fight. I have seen in my friends pin. This female just didn't want to breed. She fought back. 🤣
We got her and him check by a vet, nothing internally wrong. We just thought she was a lesbians or he wasn't good enough for her. 😂🤣😅
My friend just gave her the Lawn mower job and caught her kissing her husband's male Rhino Iguanas. They call her Iguana.
The mexican community down here in Grant County Washington love eating Goats than lamb.
The Lamb is a sacred symbols, but the milk of a goat is better for you. I guess.
My friend is a Goat breeder and milk supplier.
Her husband is a Reptiles breeder.
