I remember that this used to be on like everyone's top 10 scariest creepypasta lists and now, listening to it again and the dude just dies spewing purple prose and explaining the metaphors and it just kills the mood, like the writer thought this was a good way to end the story, to handhold the reader through the symbolism with some deus ex exposita. Like, understandable, this was probably the writer's first major project, and good for them that it became so widely enjoyed. But you shouldn't handhold readers like that, especially at the very end, it completely kills the momentum and potentially ruins the story for the audience.

Once you push it to far, like this Creepy Pasta ends up doing, you know it's fake and are therefore lulled back into security.

Now, if they'd taken one of them out for some other reason and he started eating his own flesh in front of the horrified staff, then fought them with superhuman strength and couldn't be sedated while they were trying to stitch him up, I could have stayed with that. Then the infection can be what helps him along to his grave while he's asking to be put back in the chamber.

I have a disorder called dermatillomania that causes me to obsessively pick at my skin when I'm stressed or - what else? - sleep-deprived. And some of the scariest, most out-of-control moments I have had in my life came when I was very, very sleep deprived and found myself doing serious damage to my own body. The little voice in my head that was still me would plead for me to stop while my brain just kept piloting my fingers until the moment I was finally able to snap myself out of it.
I don't know that most people understand the fear I try to convey when I describe those moments. So in a way, this story makes me feel seen.
