I'd love to see a swap of XP's Shell ontop of windows 10's kernel.
I tinkered with XP's and nt4's explorer.exe running on wine, and it worked very well (videos on my page). with a few more tweaks it could be totally functional.
Imagine having the exact interface of XP but being able to run any modern and old software, you could have linux boot directly into it and any normal user wouldn't know the difference.

    • @FlameRat_YehLon
      @FlameRat_YehLon 5 месяцев назад

      Oh well, XP interface...
For the last few years I use XP on a daily basis, it was during my highschool where the IT teacher made all classroom and computer room PC boot on LAN, and use the classic theme without wallpaper in the hope that those PC can stay lag-free for as long as possible.
So... For how flashy Windows XP looked like when it first come out, my last few bits of memory about it was all in Windows 2000 style.
I guess that really was Y2K relived way earlier than the internet went crazy about it.

I think you're talking about 98SE2ME. It's able to graft ME components onto 98 Second Edition and work fine because ME is really just a 98 Third Edition, not a whole lot changed between the OS' code bases. It's useful because while the ME kernel sucks, a lot of its user land apps and services are faster and more stable than 98's, such as the ME file explorer.
Best combination is the unofficial service pack 3 + 98SE2ME + KernelEX, though I have also wondered if some of the other enhancements, like MagnaRAM or Helix/McAfee Hurricane, would enhance this combo further.

Interesting fact, Novell attempted a project called WinBolt/WinGlue that allowed you to use DR-DOS with Windows 9x. Supposedly, much like removing IE with 98lite, it was much more stable than with MS-DOS 7. Unfortunately it got lost to time when Novell began spinning off parts of itself, like Caldera, due to financial issues.

yeah, i mentioned that this is just a background image and slightly modified color scheme to match windows 2000 colors, and NT 3.51 is 32-bit OS, it just has the old Windows 3.1 UI and shell

Ah Merging 3xNT in a newer version, I done this back in 2000 with making a hybird of windows 3.11 work group with windows ME, and it turned out stable and perfect. when Win XP came i created a perfect hybrid of windows nt 3.51 in to XP running program manager and it worked good. Not so good with windows 7 has to much file protection it was tricky. I love using the older 3x interface. Getting it to work in Windows 11 as the default interface is a bit if a pain it blue screens my computer. I have to try a NT version of program manager from windows xp with no service packs to use in wnidows 11. windows xp service packs 1 and 2 and 64 bit pro XP all removed the program manager and replaced it with a dummy progman manager that dosen't open at all so im hoping i can pull a original windows xp program manager ^_^ but windows 11 is compleatly 64 bit so running a 32 bit program manager might be unstable. i used a 16 bit version and 32 bit 95 version in windows 10 it just crashes and blue screens. lol I can't fined a untouched copy of win xp with out service packs its so annoying

1: vista was the last to properly support 16 bit executables. I've learned this the hard way, first hand.
2: lotsa msdn isos around of regular old xp sp0. even a pair of dvds with everything up to server 2003, including xp sp0; look for all win.

Can I know the files required for this so I can try this myself?

Unfortunately I don't have a list with specific files. You need to replace the following parts:
ntldr, system registry hive, all the drivers, all the DLLs in system32 folders

You can just change the shell in regedit to progman if you can source the x32 version and it's system files. Works fine aside from launching 64 bit software. Gotta make a batch file shortcut that launches it, and add the batch file as the program to progman

I'd like to see a video where you modify windows source code (2000 and xp leaks) to make this fully functional lol
for example ntvdm x64 (this is already a thing people did, it allows 16 bit windows apps like program manager to run on windows x64 (even windows 10!)

I'm afraid I won't ever look at windows source code leaks since it's illegal enough to make me troubles and not only with the channel :(

First NT stole UI from consumer Windows 3.1... Win2k stole Windows 98 Interface. Win XP stole NT code base...

win2k didn't stole any interface, but nt 4.0 did stole it from windows 95
