I didnt watch the video just because I dont find it interesting when you have worked on and replaced god only knows how many units but I did wanna say unless they are stupid rich they are always gonna wanna repair over replacing the unit. I mean I'm the type of guy if my compressor blows up I wanna buy a new compressor than a entire unit😂 **even tho I didnt watch the comment will still help with the algorithm
Just watched the video, and want to say thanks for repairing the problem. I have 37 years of experience in the field, and most guys these days only want to replace the entire system.
You are one of the very few HVAC guys that knows how to run a clean torch tip! Also sounds like the gas pressures are correct also, I am an aircraft mechanic that had to weld with Oxy-Ac,
Only a good tech can make a repair. Any hack can take good equipment and through it in the junk . Those Rheem,Rudd, Weather Kings were good equipment .
Great job, what was the smoke coming from the condensor? Dirty condensor or was it oil from then refrignant lines burning? Like your oldschool scale, i bet it will survive you!
It was a combination of leak detector liquid boiling off and may have been residual oil on the coil from the initial leak. Yep, the scale will outlast me 👍
Good work👍 but if the leakage is close to metal part of condenser. It is better to carefully melt the surroundings of metal part touching copper u and then solder copper part No callback no complains . I work as an hvac technicion in kuwait .
Yep, clean the u-bend with sand cloth, small light flame and keep it moving with brazing melting over it. I use Stay-silv 6% . Had to stop the nitro because it was popping holes, but got it to close. You can do it. 👍
Good job. I would bet that the evaporator coil has never been cleaned or even looked at. Also with that number of suspicious spots, the coil will leak in another place.
The evaporator was pretty clean, usually they rust on the end sheets. I’ve repaired many of these condensers like that. It’s the same spot most of the time . It’s best years are behind it for sure. 👍
ive seen several systems installed without a dryer, when the lineset is less than 10ft long. i dont think that is the case in this situation. did someone put a hard start on a scroll compressor smh....
@@subcoolHVAC didn’t think about it for sound reduction. I asked so when I go in to clean I could address it at the same time if it had a negative effect. Thanks
Hopefully no fan, capacitor or compressor goes out in the near future they might blame it on you, usually no good deed goes unpunished, I've done a a couple of less expensive jobs to help a customer out and BAM! they call back that their water heater, on other side of house does not work a day after I repaired the a/c, this really happened to me, just told them to go kick rocks.
They may save money now, but the unit being that old, they will be paying a lot more in the long run due to it being less efficient and more leaks are likely to show up again before long.

Thanks for not watching but commenting 😎

Thanks Alabama HVAC!
500 as opposed to 5 grand!!!! of course we want REPAIR!

Thanks CC, you learn to hear what the flame should sound like if you use it enough. Not much heat needed on this one 🔥👍
Some guys can really perform art with a mixed torch. Good job bud.
Thanks Eric 🔥

The previous company only wanted to replace 😎
Great craftsmanship tech
Thanks Victor!! 😎
Nice job
Thanks!
Looks like the H/F vacuum pump works great.
I’m using it where I can to keep testing 👍

Great video. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend
Thank you! You too!
Too many white shirt companies never would have attempted to do this repair. There all about the up sale. Nice repair
Agreed, Most customers would rather repair if it makes $ sense. Thanks for the comment 👍
Been busy....just catching up on videos.....keep it bro...I enjoy the content and the channel
The Heat is On 🔥 Thanks Jason 😎

You realize the end sheet melts at a higher temp than the copper, trying to melt that would destroy the copper. Thanks for the comment though👍
@@subcoolHVAC
I have done it bro
It needs super skills
But any way your work is outstanding 👍
Nice work.
Thanks!
Thanks!
I would be challenged to do that without burning a hole through the copper … any suggestions?

@@subcoolHVAC Crazy how rusty these evap coils can be. Is there any correlation between strict filter maintenance and leaks in evap coils?
Thanks for the video, it was interesting. Was there a huge difference in price between a repair and replacement? thanks,
Thanks David, would’ve cost at least 6x the $ to replace , ultimately it’s customer decision 👍
Nice work Subcool.
Thanks brother 👍

They provide a drier with those units, none was put in when the evaporator was replaced either 🤔.
When those aluminum coils started coming out, all the manufacturers claimed they couldn't leak.
A lot of claims were made when r410a was introduced as the new standard, here we go again with A2L 👀
@@subcoolHVAC give it 10 years and it'll be contributing to something as well

Wish you posted the prices.
Replacement would’ve cost 6-7 times as much if that helps
@@subcoolHVAC It does :) Thanks for the response. Donno why I watch all these repair stuff, but always interested in the prices. Best of luck!
Forgot the video, but what is your opinion on the compressor jackets? My unit has one and I still need to clean it.
Sound blanket? Not a fan… not sure what that has to do with cleaning?
@@subcoolHVAC didn’t think about it for sound reduction. I asked so when I go in to clean I could address it at the same time if it had a negative effect. Thanks
Gotcha, clean it sure or toss it 👍
What was the cost of fixing the unit?
About 1/5 the cost to replace
funny, most window units still use copper. besides the midea 5k
👍

I did replace the capacitor, no guarantees when in situations like this. The owner is aware of the condition
They dont make them capacitors like they used to 😅
Definitely not !
They may save money now, but the unit being that old, they will be paying a lot more in the long run due to it being less efficient and more leaks are likely to show up again before long.
Ultimately customers decision
15 pounds of refrigerant good golly.
Yep 241 oz. Factory charged
Who wants to to put in a new 5 ton every 10-15 years for $18k
You could spend that much but not for a comparable replacement to this one . Thanks for watching!
All depends on how much you charged them, if you go around making leak repairs for 500 bucks of course the owners will go with repairs.
Where did you get $500 ?
