  • We wanted to share an experience we recently had with Spyderco. Frankie’s new $400+ SpyOpera broke during deployment after only a month of ownership. For the first time ever, we shipped a Spyderco knife back to the headquarters in Colorado. Here's what happened.

    Had a Gayle Bradley 2 detent ball wear out, so I lost detent. Sent it to Spyderco and they fixed it and returned it in 7 days. Superb customer service.

    I just bought 6 knives at the 2nds sale. All the knives look excellent with the exception of some snail trails on the g10 handles of a native 5. Spyderco is not perfect, but they are close to the top of my list for reliability.

    I've had great experience with their warranty and their sharpening services. It's one of the reasons I'm a Spyderco fan for life. Glad they took care of you too!

    I sent in my Sebenza a few years ago for a spa and asked them to check the lock stick. Turns out the lock bar face was never hardened, and they did the spa for free and air mailed it back.
    I also stripped the head off of a screw on my SOG Kiku folder. Totally my fault! They replaced the entire knife for free.

    Love you guys. You should not have been made to pay to have them send your replacement knife to you. They should have sent it free out of shame.

      After all that, we were not charged, I had added the card #, but it wasn’t charged

    Thats pretty quick turn around. I sent a knife to buck to have a new blade put on. They received it June 23 and I havent got it back yet. I only got an email stating they received it and will repair it.

    I’m happy they fixed it but shipping back should’ve been FREE , I love Spyderco I just wish there was a compression lock for lefty’s 😢 I really want a shaman . Thank you for the video guys

    The only warranty claim I’ve ever done was with SOG and I had a very similar experience except they never notified me that something was sent to me. A new knife just showed up. Big benefit of companies that have U.S. offices.

    First, glad you had such a great warranty/replacement from Spyderco - that’s great customer service. Second, I’ve never seen the Spyderco Domino - Wow! Frame lock and flipper - I like!!! Great video.

    A few years ago I sent in a Persistence that was given to me in a trade. It had been acid stone etched but was missing the stop-pin. They refused to fix it because this was before they said it's okay to take a knife apart. BTW, there was a little too much info going on about the Tactiboob carry, but It seems very similar to my man-sack holster! 😂

    Third of an inch dull-near-the-tip YoJumbo, broken off tip Para Military 2, some pretty wonky and asymmetrical bevels. But that's it. Replacements came from the dealer, no problems. Greetings from Germany 😃

    I really appreciate the quality of Spyderco and am happy to hear they take care of you!! Great overall experience with Spyderco!! Just picked up the Salt Native 5 in Magnacut plain edge, Loving it so far!!

    Thanks Frankie and Bird fot the post. Good to hear Spyderco ultimately took care of you. Can't remember if you said you bought the one that broke at IN Knives .. if so, the owner/dealer should be responsible to handle the warranty (if that is Spyderco 's dealer agreement terms). No spydie issues here, but only own 2.

    The exact same thing happened to my SpyOpera about a year ago. I was lucky to deal with a store that replaced it immediately. Kinda miss the old scales though...

    Hey guys. Long time follow, first time comment. My Spyopera also broke this exact same way. That metal stick fell out. I have to send it in. I own a bunch of Spyderco products, and this was the first to break… Thanks for the info!

    It’s good to know they took care of you guys without name dropping.
    I haven’t had an issue with Spyderco either.
    I’ve only had warranty experience with Microtech, Buck and Benchmade.

    Cool fancy SpyOpera! Good story. I have the basic Spyopera and I like it.
    I have several Spyderco knives and I have never needed repair of any of them. There is one I need a clip for though.

    I have a couple Dominoes that are definitely a fave, I kinda want the Sprint Spyopera, I have the standard one. I only contacted Spyderco service once when I lost my clip screws to the Subvert and they sent me new ones right away for free with some locktite too. Good stuff, love Spyderco!

    I sent back a knife to them and the service was excellent. I've had dozens of spydies and only returned one. I've probably returned 10% of my benchmades for service....

    I had a para 2. Broke it they wouldn’t replace it because they said I was using it improperly. I took a 1/4 chip out of the blade cutting pallet straps. I completely worn another one out sharpened it so many times nearly half the blade was gone don’t remember what model. Now I have a tenacious just because and I think my cheap $3 tackle box knife is much better than it.

      @@Frizzlefry7 that’s what I say unless they think it was metal ones. I made sure they knew they were plastic ones. But I also seem to have a ability to get defective products almost anytime I decide to buy something nice for myself.

    A full replacement is excellent customer service. You're lucky that you're in the States. When I imagine that this happens here in Germany, that would mean several weeks if not months of waiting for shipping, customs etc.

    I came close on a Manix 2 lw gpknives exclusive I got not long ago. It was worse than any Delica or Japan model I’ve ever had fit and finish wise, but being Rex 45 and some sand paper, stropping the washers I love the thing too much to return it. It’s my first Manix in hand ever somehow and I loved it before seeing everything so that helped I think. If I didn’t care either way, it would’ve been my first after probably 10 or 12 Spyderco’s I’ve owned over the years possibly. Really not sure if I would have went through the hassle or not. Good to know they’re honest if it’s obvious at least. They seem to have a good reputation.

    Spyderco’s customer service is great, I’ve only ever had to use it once but excellent nonetheless. That said, I’m kinda surprised they replaced the entire knife when it appeared to only be the back lock spring, unless of course there was an issue with the way the spring was operating with the lock and caused it to break.

    The only thing that broke in all my years of collecting Spydercos etc has been my wallet but Spyderco refused to replace that part 😂

    I hang out in a few different Spyderco groups and have seen back lock breakage on at least two Spyoperas that I can recall. It actually dissuaded me from getting one as cool as they are.

    I have an old native 1 back lock, it was impossible to flick open because the whole knife is riveted permanently and can’t adjust the pivot. I left it open partially at night when I wasn’t using it for a cpl weeks and I could reverse spydie flick it with ease after that. Still can’t thumb flick it open though, even to this day.

    spyderco seem to be awesome. i live in the uk so a bit more stressful but spyderco is my favourite brand. i was thinking of grabbing this but am unsure now 😂😂😂😂

    Is the heat treatment good? I’ve listened, that lionsteel’s heat treatment of M390 was really bad. Was it changed? What is your experience with Lionsteel M390 steel? I am thinking of buying one, but I am afraid of the quality. Very good videos, thanks for your job!

    CTS-XHP is an excellent steel for random uses IMHO. It has decent toughness, the right amount of carbides to take a thin but really aggressive edge, is not hard to sharpen, etc... Really a good base steel ! I think of it as Carpenter's S30V, just with a bit less corrosion resistance in exchange for a bit more toughness 😁😁

    I had a discontinued Spyderco Mantra 2 that had issues, and Spyderco gave me the option to straight up replace it with a newer model of similar value. I think I ended up with a spydie chef.

    If it’s under warranty Spyderco send back the $5 you sent with the knife and doesn’t charge for shipping the replacement to you. So, you’re basically out the cost of shipping it to Spyderco.

    Minus the $5 shipping part…
    I’m all reality they should have thrown in a little something for having to deal with that after driving all the way to the store buying a 4plus knife then having to send it in and wait for it’s return. That’s great and all they replaced and all but considering Spyderco is at the top in my opinion they should have shown their excellence and thrown something in for all that stress and disappointment. Still good but we would never stop singing their praises had they gone the extra mile per say and compensate for all that. Shirt maybe… hat… sticker…. Payson…? Whatever.. ❤

    I have had bad luck with Spyderco customer service. They act like you are bothering them. One time they sent me a screw...postage due.

    The Domino scales are certainly pretty, but they're some of the cheapest feeling material that ive ever felt.
    It feels like the material is 95% epoxy.

    wouldn't have happened if the knife was made in the spydie murica factory, many italian knife brands have wonky tolerances, fit'n'finish, ht and almost none of them can make a satisying action.
    i had multiple italian knives from fox, lionsteel, extrema ratio, viper and maserin and all of them had some weird sh*t going on.

    Imo it may be a good warranty but their knives are way overpriced. Benchmade warranty is second to none. I’ve used several times but their knives are overpriced too. The fact is that extra $ going in someone’s pocket. Out of ours and into theirs. No good!
