    Hi Dave! Here in Portugal, i Think, In order to get the things done, you need to appeal to the heart of the people in the municipality, So they understatand your actually conditions and what you are trying to do and what is project, in order they to stay sensitized with your project!

      Yeah! even if he enjoys going to the a shower outside his land, or the toilet situation, you can totally dramatize the conditions and blame it that you cant get stuff done without the road, electricity and address, since the hardware store wont do deliveries, also you could ask Matia's wife to do it, they tend to do stuff faster when a lady in need asks them.

Usually up north things are very organized and structured and stuff just works, but down here it's frustratingly different. I immigrated to Portugal 2 years ago hoping for this "European" way of doing stuff, only to find out what you guys are experiencing 😅

    Just a few thoughts.
    1) I think slowly people could stop by and begin to develop some primitive garden, plant some seeds.
    2) few people could begin collect, organize teer down the buildings to prepare for rebuild, or just simple repurpose material to finish some part of the building.
    3) You could concider gravity batteries, since you have slopes, that could be a good form of storing energy.
    4) You can buy used solar panels for much, much cheeper, that could be concerned and potentially good beginning.
    Hope some of this can be usefull.

    I would advice to go for Grid. Because over time, we all expect the grid becoming much greener. And setting up now with a complex wind/solar combined with big batteries, might be a bigger form of waste (both environmentally and your own resources). Remember your long-term goal is, is learning new things to pass on to others and the next generation, not to be an example for perfection, today.

    • @ArthursHD
      @ArthursHD 3 года назад

      Pols and wires also have a finite lifespan. So it depends on how far is the grid and how much load he needs.
      Here in Latvia🇱🇻 we have ~12¢/kWh of which ~5 is for the grid, ~5 is for electricity, ~2 tax. Installation and administrative costs of the grid can be comparable to an off-grid solar PV system. Andy from the Off-Grid Garage put together a cheap battery pack :) For a 3 phase system, it would take at least 3k€ for the batteries. Ready-made batteries easily would be double the price :)
      For winter a Biogas CHP unit could be an option.

    • @Lily_and_River
      @Lily_and_River Год назад

      People don't just go for solar or other off grid systems to be environmentally friendly, they also want to be off grid for self sustainability. There are quite some problems with larger grids depending more and more on solar/wind. It get's more and more unstable. Governments don't scream it from the rooftops but we might need to transition to a system where our use will depend on the availability instead of the other way around. My long-term goal with a piece of land for coming generations would definitely be to become more self sufficient.

    Stay off-grid. Solar, wind, water, and wood power for the small base load, and a 3-phase military diesel generator to power the big tools in the workshop and perhaps the oven, which don't run very much.
    That giant commercial refrigerator is a liability. Swap it for a chest freezer modified for fridge temperature controls. 100 times more efficient. Also add a two burner induction cooking hob. Works great with cast iron pans.

    keep on Dave, you can deal with that. I would go 100% sure for grid, as soon as you can, you need it to work properly, to develop the land and build. Maybe you can start building a kind of wood ceiling or place to be outside in the rainy days and to have more space (near to the vans, workshop and temporary kitchen), something temporary to be more comfortable (like the one for the bike but more pro). Try to spend most of time making the space as much as comfortable and prepared to work/living until the containers can come. Good luck!!!

    Greetings from Turkey. Most of your Pro machines need 3phase electricity and it would be a real challange to handle it with going offgrid. So i think first you need a grid for an easy start. And then getting hybrid (solar + wind + grid) and then getting into offgrid would be a good transition for infrastructure. Hope municipality prepare the road for containers asap. Hope for the best. 🙏🙏 Good luck on project kamp journey. I really would love to help if things possible.

      Maybe it could be a good idea to contact a company who is doing solar deployment and make a deal, they can use some of the land to make a solar farm, and in return you could have connection to the grid for free. Maybe even cheeper solar electricity.

    Find some big rocks fill the wash outs in the road. Cut the bushes back. Be a productive member of your community. Hugelkulture, terra preta, and bio char all work great to grow food. Every bit of wood you cover will give off it's b.t.u. value to keep soils warm. Chain link fence with some weigh on it pulled behind a vehicle will grade your road after you fill in the wash outs.

  • @JoyHanford

    If your budget allows it may be better to have the road cleared by a private company and then stay in constant communication with your camera municipal to then be on top of the roads maintenance and added to their yearly maintenance schedule. This is often the way in Portugal. You can wait sometimes years for the social services and need to do an initial private investment to get the ball rolling and fit into your ideal. The work will be done eventually, this is true, but the timeframe of the camera municipal can be detrimental to your project’s moral and momentum. Boa sorte. Good Luck.

    Side step the problems, work on the stuff you can do. That thorny bush looks like bramble which should produce a very nice crop of blackberries in late summer. You could use some of those trees you chopped to give that bramble bush some climbing frames to make harvesting easier. Now is the ideal time to get some fruit trees and bushes in. Any delay over a few weeks will delay your first crop another year.

    We just bought property too. An outhouse, point well, and fire pit are my first projects on the property. Our electric poles are all label and the electric poles is what actually gives you your address. If you go with dc electric look at boat stuff. You can wire up few Stubblefield coils to charge batteries cheaper than solar. Plus solar end of life is very dirty to recycle. You can buy sheds here cheaper than shipping containers. Get a dehumidifier for container to help save electronics in container. Condensation in containers is bad.

    Dave,
    1 - at the land purchase documents that register you are the property owner you find the land address. At least the street name. Then with it you can go to the nearest CTT post station and request the correct zip code from the location of the property.
    2 - at property you need to install a mail box with the name of Project Kamp but l believe that because you're at a remote location outside the village the CTT can install it at the main road access (so a bit out of the property) these are specific mail boxes for postmen
    3- an alternative is a P.O.Box (Apartado)... You can get these at CTT closest post office and use One Army address for registration. Then you provide energy, telco, and other providers the P.O. Box Address.
    Things aren't so complicated... But you are not being well advised. Contact me and I can help you overcome this very fast.

    Best way to get ur address is as someone already said go to municipality services and ask for ur land tax bill. In Portuguese is call IMI (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis) Rita should know about it. Ur adress is there. Next for electricity you need to go to the supplier in this case EDP with the address and ask for the connection. As you don't have a building you only need to say its for agriculture for example for an engine for a well water. The road is best if u could do it urself municipality takes ages around here in any matter

    I think you might have bigger problems than those, but I hope you have been well advised when bought the land, and checked all of the permits. Since you are in good terms with câmara municipal (local council/municipality) you can ask about zoning, building permits, protected areas, fire regulations, if your ruins are legal, or illegal, etc. You need to be aware of planning restrictions and civil code/law before you do anything, because even your containers and camper vans might need a permit, let alone anything more structural and permanent. Planning and ordinance regulations and laws cannot be ignored and can be mind boggling, but the câmara municipal will help you.
    I hope the last year has allowed you more progress and has given the project new hope and energy! Don’t lose heart and good luck!

    I grew up in a solar only property because of such problems with hooking up to the electrical network. It was basically cheaper to place a solar setup. I’m sure it will be handier to be plugged-in but do expect high setup costs and bureaucracy nightmares next to the monthly costs after all that. Make the exercise of calculating how much power you’ll need on a regular basis and if you can power that with solar it will be worth it, anything of higher power like a welding machine can be powered by a generator of 3,6kw.
    We didn’t have the problem of an address but because the house was so remote all mail went to the Junta de Freguesia, that kind of service is quite normal in Alentejo maybe you can check if it’s possible there.
    For the internet connection it’s also quite easy to have a weatherproof 4G modem/router and hook it up where the connection is best. Vodafone gives you unlimited 4G for 30€ per month in Portugal, NOS has similar rates and MEO a bit costlier.
    I’m very interested about your project. If can help with anything, let me know!

  • @yetzt
    @yetzt 3 года назад +5

    you don't need solar all the way, you can build wind and hydro generators cheaply from scrap with minimal tools. biggest problem might be storage, if you can get your hands on used lead gel batteries that would help immensly for the bulk. used forklift batteries might be a good source. for the power tools it's good to use wet batteries though, they have lower internal resistance so higher currents are not as critical. of course you don't need as many batteries if you have a grid.
    i'm a bit curious why you don't tow the containers over the bumpy road with a tractor instead of waiting for the road to be fixed so a lorry can co there. there must be people with a tractor around.
    you should definitely get a tractor, you can retrofit it to run on used plant oil instead of diesel. same goes for your van if it's diesel powered.
    lastly, for an internet connection it might be worth while checking if you can get a line of sight to the town from your property. if so, you can get internet access somewhere in the town (buy a cheap flat with roof access) and forward it over wifi with some good directional antennas. a few kilometers are easily achievable, ask some people in the freifunk community to help out.

    Hi, I have a few suggestions for you..
    For the road cleaning, if it's a public road, then it is up to the municipality to clean it, but if it's considered private, then you need to do it yourself if it's your property...
    Get in touch with the Social Security Services and lay you project in the table. If you can get then to consider it a social project you will be able to apply to public funding.
    Someone suggested a "apartado" as a means to solve the mailing issue...
    That's a P.O.Box, so it solves posting, but still doesn't allow you to get electricity or internet.
    Was the land considered "constructible" or "agricultural"... if the latter then it will take some pushing on... Again, reaching for social services and letting them known you are actually living IN the land can help speed things up.
    Best of luck for your project

Put out a mailbox, write your address on it, and as the other brilliant person said “send yourself a letter”. Do this once every other day until there is a pile of undelivered letters sitting on the postmasters desk. They take delivering the mail very seriously so you know they will lose some sleep over it. About the road and the overgrown bushes:
    Ask around the neighboring land owners about what you can do about the road and bushes / 'whine to the municipality' by explaining the whole situation, exaggerate if necessary your living conditions, etc... and if you have a possible plan on what you can do (DIY) if they permit you tell them (since it won't cost them money they might take that into consideration and get back to you fast). Still you might need to go and bug them a bit to get things done.
    İf it won't be a problem (like getting fined) make a non permanent solution just to let the local transport pass:
    -e.g. fill the holes with big non sharp stones and earth, then put a wood plank or something similar on top when passing with the car (kinda like the solution when the car is stuck on the mud or something) which you can take out if necessary. -
    - About the bushes, only cut the ones that are blocking the road yourself (most of it won't block the transport from passing), it is most likely that the local transport then can pass through there by going slow.

On isolated places with few houses, mail boxes are put althoger in a single location where all get their mail. For energy (didn,t went on all comments bellow ...) I'd some delay problem to rebuilt my house. Cheap things come with that kind of problems. However, you've a simple solution. And after that... everything you actually need the junta or municipality for is going to be a tough project. Just adjust to the local way of getting things done is a better option. You don't want the municipal against you, especially on a project like this where everything already is "uncertain", against all standing procedures and without any actual plans for the future. There are literally hundreds of these initiatives of foreigners all over Portugal because somehow the idea is that PT isn't the same as other EU countries and designated pieces of land for other purposes than just agriculture or simple nature can be turned around to urban land (building dwellings). That's why you see so many Yurts, campervans, so called "temporary structures" etc. Still you need a permit to live on the land permanently in whatever structure you put up. (after you went to the process of getting a building permit). I live here in PT for 14 years now, seen so much "initiatives" start without any clue of laws and rules, thinking "it will be alright".... and no matter how well intended some of these initiatives are, more and more locals are getting negative about it as they see people from abroad starting projects (and sometimes get away with it for years) out of naivety, while no Portuguese could ever get a permit to even build something on his or her own land even if it's owned for generations, or even build an extension for an expanding family. In a lot of municipalities rules are interpreted differently, depending on the current political preference and elected major, they could let you get along with what your doing, after the election a different major could turn up with a bulldozer because whatever one has build up is illegal.... In this casa I see that there's a ruin on the land that seems originally from before the 1950 tees... so there's a possibility to get a declaration of "not needing habitation license", still you would need all the permits to restore or rebuild on the same footprint. (taken in account all modern building regulations on safety etc.).
      If you have a "restoring" or building permit you can get temporary "project electricity" but in the end the electric system has to be signed of by a certified electrician before you can get actual electricity with a meter connected. It almost looks like in Portugal things work like in any other EU country.......

    I don't know how's the situation in Portugal, but have you considered CHP(Combined Heat and Power)? If there's a gas pipe around, you should be good even in cold days. CHP is a car engine fueled with natural gas, hooked to a generator. The hot water produced by the engine cooling is used for heating and consumption and electricity can be used for whatever you want. And it's kinda clean.

    Annoying "challenges" haha.
    People could start work on clearing out the ruin and removing the old roof, then planning and getting approval for rebuilding the roof.
    I really love your project and am thinking of something similar. Not sure yet. I believe we really need to prepare for a future that is a lot harsher than today and that is best in a community. People are going to get squeezed out in the coming decades.
    Growing enough food is one of the basic challenges but also finding ways to produce more of the basic necessities locally. Tiny houses, solar power, water treatment, heating.
    I'd go straight for solar panels and batteries and for heating in the winter bury a huge water tank thermal battery that you heat up in the summer and use in winter. Cheapest way to do heating costs. You need to have enough solar panels for winter so you'd have more than enough in summer. That's a big project of course.

    • @danielmiranda2126
      @danielmiranda2126 3 года назад +1

      I own one here in Mexico, but "plantas" are expensive, like 300 dlls a day for heavy stuff, and if they need a small one I bet they might feel bad using gas/diesel to sustain themselves) specially the kind they will end up needing to power up big equipment (which they are not doing atm), right now they only need basic electricity, so they could perhaps invest just enough and get a couple of panels, since there are just a couple of people living there so it wouldn't be all that bad, and they can use them later, but they need the grid to really get going. Also it sucks that they cant get their containers there, I imagine they are paying an storage fee, hopefully a cheap one :(

    • @ikerstges
      @ikerstges 3 года назад +1

      @@danielmiranda2126 When the workshop-container arrives, they will want to whip out the machinery to start building.. there is few free timelapse apps which works great with lot of settings
    also can work as securitty cameras if you have wify
    even year old phones are cheap, one with "nightmode" have good sensors even for dark enviroment so you can better see
    it is not like cameras specially designed for night timelapses but it works good enough
    for longer timelapses it need powerbank, ideally app which works with screen off to save power
