You people are completely missing the point. suppose the trunk lock mechanism is damaged. a thief tried to break into my car's trunk and damaged the lock mrchanism so that the key would no longer operate the lock. This guy literally drilled a hole in his own car to help you people and all he got were a bunch of trolls. thank you for your terrific video sir.
Thank You, I guess i should have stated the whole problem before drilling. the car was in lock down mode, the battery was dead and the trunk tumbler was frozen. haha. but this is an emergency way to do it even if you lock your key's in the trunk. Cheers!!

Just had to do mine (2002 745Li) and after several drilled holes there was nothing to yank on. I noticed that by popping off the top left license plate plastic clip (where the license plate screw threads onto), I was able to see a 3wire harness. I fished it through the hole and went to work. Using a separate car battery, I was able to apply power to Gray/Green cable and ground to Brown/Black cable. The trunk popped open and the alarm went off.
So I finally got mine open too. I hadn't used the key for many years if ever in the trunk lock. So I wasn't sure if it was keyed for that key. I've run into this before even on a 2000 4Runner that I bought. The grease they assemble the lock tumblers with solidifies over the years if you don't use the key in the lock. Then the lock won't work. I had sprayed a bunch of rust penetrant into the lock to no avail. So today I sprayed a bunch of brake cleaner into it then rust penetrant again. Viola it slowly start to turn and then it opened. Then it wouldn't close. After using a screwdriver to operate the latch a few times it all came back life. Even the soft close motor started to work. No idea why it all stopped working but its all good now. The car sits a lot so that might be the root cause. Woo Hoo!
NO!!!!!!! Guys don't do this, the way you do this is through the starter, take off the bottom cover of the car, find the stater and with jumper cables and a thin wire just touch the starter for like 4 seconds enough to give power to the locks just mk sure someone is with u so they push the unlock button as you put the wire on the starter. I have done this 4 times works every time
Worked for me. I take cars part for a living. This worked for me on a 2002 BMW 330Ci. That car does not have a pull in the trunk. Thanks for the information!!!
I don´t know whether this works on E38 as well, but the trunk wires on my E39 were shot and I wasn´t able to get to the trunk... Turns out if you turn the key in the lock 90 degrees to the left, you can manually open the latch, which saved me a lot of headache. If you turn in 90 degrees to the right, you engage the valet position, where the trunk can only be opened with a master key.
My 2006 bmw trunk will not open. This video might have saved me. I took the battery out and closed the trunk and it will not open. Won’t open with the regular key or a fob or setting it up for a jump. Also my style coop doesn’t have foldable seats. They have to be taken out from the trunk. I have been completely stuck and have tried everything and watched so many videos trying to figure out a way to get it open. This is my last resort and I thank you so much for this video. I don’t know if you will see this in time but are there any wires or things I have to be careful for when drilling into the trunk? I have a 2006 325i.
Is that release rod visible if you were to look through the middle opening through the rear seats? All I see is the latch and the circular head that spins up and down with the automatic release. I don't see any cable to pull on. Or is the cable behind the latch?
Also to add to the problem, The battery was dead and I could not get in the car or trunk. I just purchased this car so I needed to get the the battery to change it out and the Locking mechanism was stuck and had to change it out. So to all you brilliant touch the green wire guys out there, lock your car, take the battery out and then show me how you got in without going to the dealer???
i got the same problem on my e90 323i i took out my batery and pull out some socket on the top plate on batery. i closed down the trunk and i failed to open back. i try to jumper the batery but also failed i try tu pull out my back seat also i failed i make the small hole at the center back seat and try to pull the hook in the trunk, and failed coz is no hook in my trunk! i will try to drillform out side like u tomorrow and hopefully is work!
I have the same issue. If the power cable is connected. Can cut the front foklight cable connect to a battery to provide a short power supply. Success in my first case. My second case is... My bro did not know I took out the key lock. So the power connection is not connected. The case no longer work. So I need to drill a hole. To be exact is many holes and cut off the metal
You could have plugged jumper cables to the extended terminal that's under the hood and open trunk with power. I have this same problem with my lock not working and my battery died too worked for me. I have Bmw 745li tho
Even if i did that which I couldn't because the doors were locked and could not open hood, The trunk switch was broke so no way in. My case was extreme.
Pierre, first, nice video, second, dont worry about those troll comments. Can you give us some dimensions of where you drilled for the rod? Im sure you have fixed the vehicle by now, but if you could possibly remember to show us what the inside of the lock body was doing when you inserted the rod, that would be great. Hope you are well, Will
sorry just saw this, basically just follow a line from the key lock to 2/3 center of licence plate. the cord runs in a straight line. I needed to do this to mine unfortunately but It can also be used if your at the wrecking yard and there is no key and no way to open trunk. This is obviously a last resort method without a dealer or locksmith coming out.
Greetings Mr.Sutton, Great video, how long did it really take? My 01, e38 trunk is stuck closed. The key turns but when I push the button button inside the car the trunk goes up and come right back down and not open. I use to be able to press the button on the key and yank it up to get open but now that doesn't work anymore. You made this look so easy.
carlos sutton I would probably unhook the battery so that the central locking system would be disabled, then try this that way the truck will not sell shit anymore. And remember this is a last resort method. I’m not sure why your truck goes up and then comes right back down
My E38 is doing that exact same thing. I tried pushing the button and lifting, having people sit on the trunk when pushing the button to spring it up into action but nothing. What did you end up doing??
You did not explain much. What's the theory behind this? Like where you should drill the hole, what are you fishing for with the hook thru the hole, etc. Knowing will help understanding and adaptation.
I have not seen this post in a long time but a quick explanation is, I did not have a key it was locked in my truck the battery was dead windows were up the only way for me to get in was to call the dealership. So I saw a video of someone doing this and what is in tailed is, if you go across vertically from the latch to where you turn the key right in the middle should be the latch cord so somewhere in the middle you drill a hole big enough to stick a looped piece of hanger in, grab the plastic coated wire with the hanger and pull That will release the trunk you can get your key open up your car open up the hood charge your battery and go on your way
Thank you so much!!!! Now everything you did make sense. It will save the day for many unfortunate souls. I will try not to get locked out like this, but who knows...
I opened my trunk by connecting an extra battery or car with cable wire jumpers that the bmw has connection posts in front inside the hood especially for that... I don't know how this car can be any different knowing the Germans designed it that way knowing this issue would happened.... no need to drill nothing!
Which fuse? Can you explain? I’ve been trying to get in my trunk for four days now it’s a convertible hardtop so it doesn’t have the punch out in the backseat and battery is completely disconnected. 😣
Now you can do this at your own risk but... There is a latch cord between the lock cylinder and the latch on all cars thats where I drill them out at junk yards. better be accurate though or it can be ugly. AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
I disconnected my battery for a long vacation, both + - . All doors unlocked. Came back, open engine hood and get a spare 12 volt batter to hook engine positive to + of battery. Likewise for the negative. Next turn on starter a click . If instrument light turns on the trunk should open. Don't drill holes unless you got a failed lock after a back collision. It is a 1997 E39 528i pre facelift . Pre Trunk release model.

This is stupid.... If you ever need to get into your trunk, and have no access through the seat, remove the back seat and energize the grey/green wire... It will then pop.
Now let's see who's really stupid. let's say you locked your car, the battery dies and the tumbler is frozen. Tell me what genius way to get in now without going to the dealer.?? Then make a video trying to help others with the problem instead of trolling without real answers.
@@NDLAP66 well first youd need to have a locksmith come or if you can reach in and pop the hood with a long rod from the window Now find a spot in the engine bay Supply power to the car Then get access to interior by pressing the unlock button once and pulling the interior handle twice with the previously used Long Rod And now you would go about applying power to the wire in the back seat to Pop the Trunk I'm stupid and a genius I'm a dangerous motherf@$#=%

@PierreSutton ok what exactly were you pulling on? Is it a wire/cable or the rod connecting the trunk actuator with the lock assembly?
Rod
It was actually more like a cable release
