Jay Nelson's travel micro-campers: from bike home to tiny boat

  • "I don't know if I could have a car without a bed in it." San Francisco Jay Nelson has put beds into nearly every vehicle he's ever owned, including a semi-totalled Honda Civic (bought for $200) and a tiny rowboat (found on craigslist).
He's even made a moped into a camper, but his most impressive podmobile is the electric camper bike he built from scratch using parts "you can find at a hardware store".
He bought the PVC pipe chassis online, along with an electric motor (he discarded his initial pedal-powered design because of the San Francisco hills) and began to build the vehicle in his driveway.
He calls his tiny mobile home the Golden Gate and with an electric motor range of 10 miles, it can go basically anywhere within San Francisco (7 x 7 square miles) at a top speed of 20mph.

Jay's Honda Civic camper was a truly inspirational design which maximised the habitation module interior space without overloading the car with a heavy structure.
It was also beautiful and unique.
Prior to this, I had never considered this type of construction for a camper.
Learning about the many benefits of using the 'Stitch & Glue' method of boat building was quite an eye opener.
Thank you for bringing such fantastic designers to your excellent channel.

Boston Whalers are unsinkable! I will never forget the commercial where they cut a 14ft in half and it still stayed afloat!
Brings back such good childhood memories of Jamaica Bay, Rockaway Beach Queens NY!

Don't apologize for what you are building, you are completing "Proof of Concept" designs. I have built many (11 two, three and four wheel electric bike designs), they don't always look great, but they do perform well. Keep up the great work.

This is my favourite enclosed e-bike yet!! I'm thinking that body made out of rigid foam board would be fairly easy to do without a frame, especially with the fibreglass encasing it, and provide a fair amount of insulation here in Canada. Plus it would give me plenty of room for a large battery bank and solar panels.

You'll have a little more freeboard going to a 12' boat. I thought of doing something similar with a Penguin hull. Perhaps with a small weighted keel, or pour 20 lbs of concrete in the floor for stability. A Boston Whaler is a good idea, naturally stable and plenty of freeboard.

If that car/bike was made of light weight material and lost the scuba gear, toilet, thick bedding, surf boards and rack but kept kitchen idea, put in some thin memory foam plus swap the electric engine with a gas 8-12 hp that thing would be beast... imagine having two people in it camping out down some nice peaceful back roads with meadows and big trees swaying back and forth and you just woke up, start the engine and begin doing a nice, easy 25km down the road well cooking some bacon and eggs..

I want to build a totally collapsible house (about 6' x 10'). And even may have a tee-pee style outer structure made from bamboo. This would make it high-wind resistant. The house would be plywood and rectangular with a beveled roof (around the edge) and a smaller flat roof panel (with solar cells) in the center. Inside, there will be a couch (that turns into a bed) would be made of plastic milk-crates (lightweight) and they can also be used as storage (under). And cushioning on top. There will also be a plywood cup-board that has TV and stove and sink (all in one piece). It will be designed to dismantle quickly and be towed with electric assist (when needed). Just tow it by walking or bicycle. Maybe make the foundations out of light plastic pallets and ply over and carpet. When collapsed, it would be about 3' by 4' by (how long the bamboo has to be). Just an idea.
