Every week we welcome some of our favourite DJs into the club in the corner of our office. We were delighted to welcome legendary garage figure DJ EZ on to our decks.
Growing up in North London, EZ became immersed in music at an early age, hosting a slew of radio shows in the early 90s before teaming up with Kiss 100 in 1999 where he's been a mainstay since. You can catch DJ EZ on KISS FM every Friday night from 10PM - 2AM. His deep knowledge and understanding of garage led him to be chosen by Warner Music to mix the highly acclaimed 'Pure Garage' compilations and his ferocious, fast-paced DJ sets undoubtedly single him out as one of the UK's finest.
The Tottenham-born DJ has mixed the latest Fabriclive CD, which can be pre-ordered here, including old skool classics from MJ Cole, Ed Case and Sia as well as newer productions by Disclosure, SBTRKT and Royal T.
I think EZ should be knighted for his services towards mixing UK Garage. Sir DJ EZ.

Truly a legend and a pioneer. DJ EZ almost single-handedly re-defined UK Garage and was the innovative bridge between old skool 4 on the Floor and 2-Step. Without which, I wonder how many of the styles we have today would exist. Major Major CHOOOON!

EZ is one of the few DJ's out there who really smashes the CDJ's and the Pioneer to their full capabilities. He has the mindset of a battle/scratch DJ just keeping the party rocking with awesome skills and a bag full of bombs. He always delivers.
The fact that DJ Ez can draw me out to a rave when he is on the line up 25 years later says something. Him Mc Det, Karl Tuff Enuff Todd Edwards all deserve awards. DJs of my childhood. I Miss 1995

As far back as I can remember, I have had Garage music in my ears even before I was a teen.
It’s been the only constant, as it’s what is familiar…. There is a deep correlation between life and music.
Garage music has helped me so much throughout my life and I know it’s going to serve its purpose in the years to come.
I remember coming out of a long depression period from 2019-2021, that was also during the pandemic.
The legend DJ EZ who has been serving his greatness to UK Garage music done a 24 hour stream and the outcome of that!
This is a fine example as many other things in life (if you choose to see it that is) that your passion, love and reasoning can get you through a lot in life 🙏🏻

Saw EZ at secret garden party years ago, was on the pagoda stage and was one of the best sets, so small and intimate, I was tripping on acid and it was raining and I didnt give a fuck, was sooo good, pure vibes! Taking me back to that day, got my gun fingers out and shaking out in my room, ya dun kno!

growing up in germany without internet it wasnt easy getting into garage/2step, buit somehow i managed and am still loving garage till this day. EZ was my idol back then and brought me into djing myself.
He's just amazing to watch after a spliff and watch listening to how he mixes it.

was never into UK Garage but since I came across this set from EZ, i play it daily for the last 2 months i would think - his skills are unreal!
This is a prime example of man overcoming technology. EZ has mastered the tech and is making it work for him and for us! Big up and serious respect to anyone trying to master this craft. It's a different ballgame now. Vinyl is the original craft and if you can pull it off respect to you. But this is next level skills!
mixing on vinyl is nothing to EZ, he's grand-mastered, S-tiered that. This new tech with cd players and high level mixers is the god class he's looking for now, i'd say he's 98% there already... rinsing set...and no doubt!

Hey man, I love EZ as much as the next man, but that's an overstatement. He's good but certanly not the best when it comes to skill/technique.
Depends how you define best. I've never seen a set that creates as much energy in the crowd without an MC, and on CDJs I can't think of a DJ that's been so pioneering and accomplished when it comes to technique. But at the same time all his tracks are normally the same BPM when makes it a lot easier to execute those kind of advanced skills. Not that that takes away from what he does, the guy's a beast. But I saw J Rocc live a couple of years ago and I was blown away, what a turntablist, the guy would switch from UK bass to 70's funk to soul and hip hop and every time the mixing was on point and he was giving the crowd exactly what they wanted before they even knew what they wanted. Overall a better performance but at the same time no where near as hyped as an EZ set.
If hype is the biggest criteria, I'd say festival DJs like Guetta or whomever is most popular at the moment would win. On the other hand, quality DJs like Carl Cox for example also create insane hype playing much less 'pumped' tracks than EZ.
By this I don't want to disrespect EZ or anything, cause I consider him awesome. I just think that saying he's the best DJ is an overstatement because there are lots of criteria for that title, and I don't think he fits all of them.

Why do all these top DJs red line their mixers? Are the pioneers designed to be run in to the red without clipping or what?
The individual channels are red lining, but not the master-out, so he should be ok.
this annoys me to no end..Coming from a bit of music...I've always been under the mindset of setting your proper gain structures and keeping each channel in the green and getting the best SNR possible. And if you need more gain because your faders are maxed then you have some extra DB to play with....I always leave channel faders in green and boost up main output...The hotter the signal out, the less the power amps need to work and the better the signal chain....

Lol, man if the individual channels are in the red, that means you're sending a distorted signal to the master...record it and check the waveform, it'll show the fat sausage of a signal

Im with you on this 22Calum22. Ive seen EZ live numerous times from back in the late 90s uptill now and hes as sharpe as ever, he pulls out all the tricks in this mix which is very impressive but I too like to hear a bit more of each of the tunes. For most its all about the first drop then the build up to the second drop that really gets it going the mix it over. So in conclusion im diggin ur comment for sure!
