why the foundation trench is taken as 1/5 of total quantity of excavation?

Considering the low rate of earth filling, the quantity is usually taken as 1/5th of volume of earthwork. But for high rate of earthwork in filling or for accuracy, quantity of earthwork in filling in foundation = volume of earthwork in excavation - volume of earthwork in foundation

in verandah excavation subtract by 9/2 or 7/2

We should subtract 9/2 while doing excavation for verandah because we have already done the excavation for main wall of width 9.so subtract the overlapped portion i.e 9/2
