The Shogunate and the Imperial government both wanted to be modernized and they both wanted the power. Who knows the Shogunate could have very well made the same call over uniting the provinces under one rule after he got complete control over Japan. Modernization was just a matter of time, it's a good thing too they wouldn't have been able to compete with western countries nor evolved to what they are now. Samurai left a crucial mark on the worlds history and they won't be forgotten.

Problems escalated because of Edo period when shogun banned all outside traders from his lands. That isolation cost Japan greatly. Second, during Tokugawa shogunate there were still old ways in use like in middle ages, all the samurai lived on a stipend paid through a tax on the farmers which was a heavy burden on their backs, taking half of their production. The main reason why Satsuma rebellion has come is obvious. Shogunate first banned all foreigners, there is an example of killing one of British soldiers when they were in one city of Japan, few samurai wanted to pass a bridge but British wanted first and he paid the price with life for not knowing the old samurai tradition. It was classified as road rage and British authorities called upon the shogun to punish the samurai and pay comensation, and when he issued a warrant for their arrestment, inside Tokugawa police agents refuse to apprehend thouse samurai because of respect towards them.
Third thing why rebellion started is when Shishi politic organization in Choshu called upon Yoshida Shoin who had great influence over people during late years of Tokugawa shogunate. Reason why? Because they both realised that shogun is using archaic military technology, refusing to go forward and would ultimately be defeated. When Shishi fired upon foreign ships passing by Choshu in the early 1860's the foreign ships carried out a devastating bombardment of Choshu. Clearly such confrontations would only result in the defeat of the Japanese. The solution was to learn from the foreigners their military technology. And their the imperial court seize the opportunity to overthrow the shogunate rule by tactic known as
      divide and conquer.

Please stop framing the argument in that way! The Shogunate wanted to advance just as much as the Imperial Court, but they simply didn't have the administration or resources for it. The idea of Samurai charging into guns was just an image put in your head by The Last Samurai. Also, you have to remember that the Imperial forces brought about a military dictatorship in the end. Not that the Shogunate would have done better, but there's some food for thought...

Battle of Shiroyama though, and that is also the Spin the Mejii and later Showa administration put in it.

Imagine training your whole life to be the best warrior possible, only to get gunned down by the son of a peasant whose military career consisted of 6 weeks of training. Guess they shouldn't have brought a katana to a gun fight.

I think those 3 years would pay them off quite nicely.

@@gustavodutra8578 there is a reason why there are basically 0 mentions of that ever happening, because usually they all got shot before they could get anywhere near an infantry line.
and even when they did they were still hopelessly outnumbered, so turns out that mass-training a lot of people to be okay at their job is a lot better than a handful of people being really good at their job in either situation.

Makes me feel sad for all the brave samurai who died at the hands of the modern guns, all for the glory of the shogun. Japan changed for the better, but at a cultural high price in my opinion. But still they have managed to combine the traditions with the modern, which gives me a great respect for Japan.

Guns dominated the battlefields of Japan from the 1600's onwards. By the time of the Boshin war, very few would have used a meleé weapon for anything other than a last resort.

I am aware of the fact that shogunate forces also armed themselves with modern guns and cannons, but there were still those who only carried swords and spears. Hm.. the imperials ruled with military power too, indeed, but I am not really partial in that war, I am too uneducated on the subject to make a proper choice, so I would be fine with the shogunate winning too. Anyway, I don't want to argue here, you sound like a intellectually superior opponent on this matter.

Haha, sorry about that. I just got a bit inflamed. I didn't want to compare intellectual dick sizes with anyone. But I did get excited because the Boshin War and the Meiji Period are so complex. There's a lot of layers to the conflict between feudalism and bureaucracy, industrialization and tradition, Western influence and nationalism.
