Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷), Gulou (鼓楼), and Shichahai (什刹海) are three must-visit destinations in Beijing (北京) that offer travelers a blend of traditional charm, cultural depth, and vibrant local life.
Starting with Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷), this lively hutong (胡同) is a favorite among both locals and tourists. Its narrow alleys are lined with centuries-old courtyard homes, now transformed into boutique shops, cafes, and street food vendors. The atmosphere is a mix of old and new-while the architecture reflects Beijing’s historical past, the street itself buzzes with youthful energy. Here, you can shop for handmade trinkets, savor local snacks like sugar-coated hawthorn skewers (糖葫芦), or simply enjoy people-watching.
Just a short walk away is Gulou (鼓楼), also known as the Drum Tower. Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty, this iconic structure once played a key role in Beijing’s timekeeping system. Every day, drummers would perform to mark the hours, a tradition that can still be witnessed during live drum performances. Climb to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the surrounding hutongs and experience a slice of old Beijing.
Close by, Shichahai (什刹海) offers a more tranquil experience with its scenic lakes and historic surroundings. Comprising three interconnected lakes-Qianhai (前海), Houhai (后海), and Xihai (西海)-Shichahai is a popular spot for leisurely walks, boat rides, and evening relaxation. By day, visitors can explore the historic Prince Gong Mansion (恭王府), a beautifully preserved Qing Dynasty residence. At night, Houhai's lakeside transforms into a hub of nightlife with live music bars, restaurants, and tea houses, creating a vibrant yet laid-back atmosphere.
