I've been watching the back catalogue of these videos and think that they are highly underrated. Such good, quantifiable advice!

Love the video. Especially creating urgency by telegraphic future actions felt like an eye opener. One slight criticism in terms of the pacing of the video the doubling the HP advice felt off because you didn't elaborate as you did for the other points.

Loving these advice videos, great food for thought. I'm running a Shadowdark campaign and definitely taking these onboard.

About preventing damage, I have a dilemma between choosing Defense for +1 AC or Lucky to get advantage/disadvantage during combat for my Level 4 Melee Battle Master. I'm leaning towards taking Lucky as my level 4 Feat over Defense.

Are you using 2014 or 2024 Lucky?
I'm not a fan of the 2014- it is a bit chunky for me personally. The 2024 Lucky is really solid and very flexible across the entire game. Defense for +1 AC in comparison is not as exciting, persoanlly. If I could homebrew Defense, I would personally take a note from Shadowdark RPG's Shield Wall feature. "if you weild a shield, you can use your action to take a defensive stance. Your AC becomes 20 during this time." In many ways it's using a shield to make a nonmagical verion of the shield spell, but make it a concetration that says you can't use an action while defending, you can still use BA, RA, and MOV. And I would add, You make attackers roll at DIS against allies that are 5ft next to you, because you "are defending".

@@FablesD20 2024... I'm at level 2, but trying to plan things out ahead of time. I'm going to take Heavy Armor Master at 6 (combining with the Parry maneuver at lvl 7), and Sentinel at 8. I want a good balance of damage dealing, with AC and damage resistance. It is a sword and board, with Dueling as my fighting style. Current AC with Chainmail is 18.

@@FablesD20 I also took Magic Initiate Wizard and Magic Initiate Warlock when creating the character, so I have Blade Ward, Booming Blade, Eldritch Blast, and True Strike (2024) as my cantrips, with Shield and Armor of Agathys as my 1st level spells. We're doing Death House, before Curse of Strahd.

@@Jediknight4jc Sounds fun! You mentioned, you're planning ahead, I actually want to respectfully pushback on that plan- HEAR ME OUT. It's why i love shadowdark- this coversation is inspiring a video!
in shadowdark, you can't plan ahead, because when you level up, you roll for what you get, and you have to RP why you got that "talent". The only way to get stuff outside of the class is by "learning from a master" on downtime. What this leads to, is being more present and allowing the character and level growth be based on what happens in the game vs what you want to push the character towards with a pre made plan. Don't get me wrong, i love a good planned out character, 5e makes it so much fun! But there is a lot of joy that comes out of just riding the wave and seeing what happens, and choosing what you get based on the events at the table, the combat, the RP scenes, the monsters.
But that aside, you're fighter sounds dope as hell!
