  • As per the patented-by-me "JOHN BONHAM ENGINE" exercise, herein lies THE crucial key to the elusive Ultasmooth Bonham groove found on live versions of his Moby Dick solo over the years. Please see my Bonzoleum You Tube channel for hundreds more BONHAM/ZEPPELIN videos. And also check out the BONZOLOGY Drum Channel here on You Tube-it's a MUST SEE. / @bonhamology

Helpful!!!!!!! I didn't realize that the bass drum isn't always back-&-forth. Its only on certain notes. Back to the drawing board, but now i have a better understanding going into it. Thanks Terry!!!!!

In the 1970 Moby Dick solo, Bonham looks to be tripleting with the tom, double stroke on the snare, and then a bass kick (but also might be a quick double stroke too). I used to think it was a paradiddle, but it looks like an inversion or a different placement of hands of a 5 stroke roll. I like the way you present that left hand double stroke and then going into an alternating right hand-left hand double stroke after hitting the tom, but what differs from the way you do it and the 1970 recording is Bonham goes into what I believe is a 5 stroke roll while you have a hesitation (continuing 8th notes) and then go into the right hand-left hand double stroke roll. Doing this makes it sound less like a triplet and more just like a random roll on the snare, not that it's a bad thing. I've always wanted to know how he does it and I think you've shown how to get very very close to what he's doing, but I still think there is something crazy goin on with his foot.

Yes-the earlier MD had jillions of paradiddles. He seemed to get more into paradiddle-diddle type patterns a little later.

Just discovered your channel....well done! I think you're Jack Blacks funnier brother. One of my favorite songs because of the drumming is Fire with Mitch Mitchell. Any chance you could review or play along to that song please. I love the jazz influences in that song. Cheers Terry...awesome job!

Love it! Ginger Baker would do things much similar in his performance in Toad. Independence with all four limbs, it's beautiful.

Got to say you have fantastic instructional drum videos and you are quite entertaining as well... Just curious about that silver Sparkle Kick Drum. Does it have a Tom Mount or is it virgin? I'm in the market for one and I was just wondering if they made them without a Tom Mount hole ever? Thanks...
