  • We had an epic day trip from Tauranga to the South of the Coromandel. We went to Whangamata for a coffee stop followed by a beautiful hike to the top of Mount Pauanui.

Your overseas viewers are getting the wrong idea, when you talk about things being so quiet, closed. NZ has four seasons. Summer, beaches are packed, because thats when most have their annual holidays.

    Hey-ya Glen and Mado
Whangamata and The Mount are arguably the two best beaches in NZ in the summer time. Cool people, cool cars and lots of food and beverages everywhere. It's a great time indeed. Summer here just goes off

The best time to go to Whangamata is 20th-24th March 2024. Beach Hop week! Dancers, free live bands, and hundreds and hundreds of hot rods and classic cars. The population of Whangamata swells that week! Book your campsite NOW! If you only want to do a day trip Saturday is best.

Pauanui was the first purpose-built seaside holiday town in New Zealand. It's basically the playground for the richer folks of Auckland, as you can tell by the many lavish 'holiday homes' around the town. Tairua, its sister town, is much older, but is also becoming the playground of the more well-off.

Haven't been to Whangamata this century (!) but it was always a blast to spend New Year holidays there back in the day. It has grown an awful lot in 30 years but even back then, on a really nice New Year's Day, the beach would get a crowd of 30,000 on New Year's Day (many travelling from Auckland and Hamilton for the day) and & beach was still not crowded like it might be in Europe.

So people who start work at 3am to bake should stay open later than 3pm? Would you? How feckin rude. These are not franchise businesses that have van loads of pre-packaged and labelled goods delivered each morning. They're independent traders who make their own goods on premises. Though the doors might be closed there are probably bakers out the back making dough for bread and pastries for tomorrow's trade. You can rest assured that bakers and butchers rise very, very early to get the shelves stocked with fresh goods rather than yesterday's goods. Who can blame them for not wanting to work more than 12 hours a day, though many do, closing the till and the doors to work another 3-4 hours getting tomorrow's goods prepared.

Good on you guys for attempting our place names, however Your Killing Me,,,
Whangamatā is pronounced - Fong a ma ta.
Wh in most regions is pronounced as an F.
There are a were basic rules around the Maori language, (even us Kiwi can get it wrong) Then there are the regional dialects.
Vowels in Maori are pronounced differently to English vowels, if in doubt just ask someone, anyone, we are happy to help.
On the other foot, I’d be a laugh if l was in Ireland trying to speak the local language, so good on ya.

Little presumptuous there with the travel thing.
Kiwis are renowned for being global nomads.
Most kiwis would have traveled overseas more than once.
And Turkey is on the list for many as is a the historic Middle East and Europe.
Asian destinations as we have such a diverse culture.
That many people now living here will return to ancestral lands because of family links.
    But kiwis are natural explorers.
