I want to say "they don't write them like this anymore", but truth is, I don't think anyone can. An era that produced timeless classics and JT was one of the masters.
Yes, I do believe that is true. Songs like this are a Gift, something that you cannot make happen no matter how hard you try. It just comes from the ❤ at a particular time and then it's gone again, like the wind.
Wow! That's an awesome story. If you told James Taylor about that, he might get a "kick" out of it. All kidding aside, I've been lucky enough to see him in concert twice, in Atlanta. In the 70's he played at the Civic Center and a couple years ago he and Jackson Browne played in Duluth, just north of ATL. Both were great shows although being much older and with more life experience the 2nd time I went to see him, the songs had so much more meaning than before. My brother attended both shows also, and he used to play guitar in th3 style of J.T. when we were younger. I remember listening to all his albums as soon as they came out He's one of the best singer/songwriters, in my opinion.
I played the guitar and sang this song along with Here comes the sun at the beside of my father as he passed away at home. I had learned to play by listening to James Taylor in my teens and my parents loved his songs.
That's great you did that for him. My dad is a James Taylor fan as well. He used to listen to a particular song of his all the time when I was a kid. I'm dying to figure out which song it was. Hopefully I can figure it out and maybe play it for him before his time comes, as well.
He has never forgotten his friend from when he was in treatment for depression. He made it through and she didn’t. He plays this at every concert to honor her memory.
I'm a filipino and i love listening to this music, i thought the lyrics was just to someone else? So it was her friend suzanne who just passed away🙏 thank to you now that i now what the lyric was for,it was them thank you again lindawer♥️🙏
My God James, your voice, this melody, your guitar, and sincere words send me into tears. Tears of remembrance and of longing, now almost dead in me. Thank you for adding light into darkness. You must be a gentleman.
One acoustic guitar, the sound, the unique James Taylor sound nobody else can duplicate. Taylor does not get enough credit for how great a guitar player he is.
The joy this song brings to me is almost outweighed by the sadness of knowing that this generation of young people will never know the spirituality of music as it was set in the 60's and 70's. James Taylor was among so many great ones, and I am beyond grateful for having been able to participate in this very human element of bliss.
An artist that can bring the toughest person to tears. An artist that is at the top of all story telling songsters. His songs are so relevant in this world today. 👏🇦🇺
I heard this on the radio and was INSTANTLY in love with it… the emotion, the melancholy, the wonder. I’ve been a JT Adan supporter nice and I’m now 67 years old. This song never fails to grab me.
I lost my mother to ALS, and I've always found his music to be Is poignant and beautiful. This song really touched me deeply since the passing of my mother. Very grateful. For such a beautiful song. I actually wept through it.
I lost my son to ALS in 2021. When he was sick he used to send me songs which he felt a connection to (Just Remember I Love You by Firefall), but he grew up listening to James Taylor because I always played his music. My last song to him was The Promise by Tracy Chapman. I will see him again. I am very sorry for your loss.
Damn, he gets better with age. I still remember hearing this song when I was a kid, it struck me as the perfect mix of sad and beautiful. I hope to see him live one day.
JT has such a comforting voice and his own unique nuances in the way he plays you can always recognize his guitar playing as it’s like no other. I’ve seen him many times but hope to see him live at least one more time before I check out here. Love you James Taylor.
I first listened to Fire and Rain by James Taylor while on the Cornell University campus of the 1970s. It reminded me of a 19 year old girl, Dawn Swatzentruber on a huge farmhouse just outside of Watertown in Upstate New York State in December 1968. We shared our personal experiences then. Last year, I just found out that Dawn has passed away leaving her husband n a daughter. I felt so sad as we had not been in touch for so long. Rest in Peace Dawn in your Little Green Acres at the Mennonite Cemetery in Watertown
Wow! Just Quintessential James T! One of the first truly memorable songs of JT that I heard on the radio. Will never forget that classic voice, and those work-about hammer-on and pull-off “sus” chords. I think I’ve heard James describe the connection of this song to a real life experience of his, more sad times, but rising from the ashes. Glad you made it, James. Have loved your music!
Absolute masterpiece this. I'm 35, loved some artists from the 90s. But would have love to been around when this kind of music was mainstream. Absolute depresses me the majority of music these days as cliché as that sounds.
There are so many songs of yours that are my "favorite". When you performed this during the Concert for 9/11, it became my #1 out of all. The lyrics so fit what many were thinking, the images of those flying machines. You write beautiful music about life, some funny like "Traffic Jam", sweet like "Smiling Face", wistful like "Carolina in My Mind", "Walking Man". Thank you so much. Loved this performanc.
I always wonder, how would someone even start making something this amazing? How do you even start that process? It’s just too damn good. It’s lasted generations in my family
I always get goosebumps and a twang of my heartstrings when I hear this beautiful and timeless masterpiece! Thank you for the awesome music and memories! Hugs💖💖💖
I played this in my senior year talent show. Didn't know my audience. In a small Tennessee town. This kid came in last.....right after me and they went crazy hearing some Waylon song. I blocked it out of my memory I was so mad.
James Taylor, I've never been to one of your concerts, but that's ok. Would of loved to have seen you in concert though. !!! 🤗❤️ Your music goes with me everywhere I go. In my head, on a CD player, on a station in St. Louis, MO, it's all around me.. I've listened to you since JR. High. You are a Great story teller in your own right. That's why we we love you and your music so much. And, beside the fact your voice, your band and back-up singers! ❤ I'll be listening as long as you keep writing and singing. ❤❤❤❤🤗🤗🤗
Ah nice! I’ve never seen the footage of “Fire and Rain” but have seen “Frozen Man” just not the very beginning and very end of it. I can’t wait until that one hopefully gets uploaded here.
1st Part of song is about a really good friend that committed suicide in the early 70s, they told him while finishing his album while in England, second part is about him getting over addiction, third part is about his battle with depression. James is so talented he could write a song about the telephone book.
Just yesterday mornin', they let me know you were gone Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song I just can't remember who to send it to I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again Won't you look down upon me, Jesus? You've got to help me make a stand You've just got to see me through another day My body's aching and my time is at hand And I won't make it any other way Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again Been walking my mind to an easy time My back turned towards the sun Lord knows, when the cold wind blows It'll turn your head around Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line To talk about things to come Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you, baby One more time again, now Thought I'd see you one more time again There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain, now
I've got this track on my CD Sweet baby James I do not know how they got that nickname I wish I knew however James Taylor a music icon he is phenomenal documentary about James Taylor it was very deep documentary about James Taylor Carly a tired of him shooting up it was a great documentary in the documentary Sweet baby James said if it hadn't been for Carly Simon and the good Lord I wouldn't be here now but it didn't change his voice he is still great music icon will be forever 🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶 real music
And that's all there is to it. Just write a song that good and then sing and play it that well. Simple.
Beautiful.
This song is beyond music, it's a prayer
This is the kind of music that you'll never get tired listening to it again and again and again .
Who needs a band when you can play guitar like that? Great sound mix as well.
Singer, songwriter and guitarist...Easily one of my favorites from all 3 categories
You really don't need a band when you're this good, the band would only drown out the purity of the performance with unnecessary layers of noise
He is a very special soul. 👍💗🎸
I'll never forget 2016 Evanton Alberta in performing live I was pregnant with my daughter and she kicked for the first time while he sang Baby James❤
Oh I love that!!! ❤
I named mine after his Sarah Maria’s song 🎉❤i

Really? Heart breaker. I remember when he went to Rehab

My oldest sister left this world in 2011. You were a favorite of hers James Taylor.
My God James, your voice, this melody, your guitar, and sincere words send me into tears. Tears of remembrance and of longing, now almost dead in me. Thank you for adding light into darkness. You must be a gentleman.

One word: Masterpiece. The combination of his lyrics and guitar is the the equivalent of Monet's Water Lilies painted in sound waves.
Timeless

Just one of the great soundtrack songs of my life! Love you Sweet Baby James ❤

An artist that can bring the toughest person to tears. An artist that is at the top of all story telling songsters. His songs are so relevant in this world today. 👏🇦🇺

Such a beautiful performance of this song. Tears fell. So much appreciation for his music in my life.
That Gallagher guitar sounds wonderful, and James vocal on this recording is really special. The clarity captured is really stunning.
Wonderful memories brought back by this gorgeous song.
I heard this on the radio and was INSTANTLY in love with it… the emotion, the melancholy, the wonder. I’ve been a JT Adan supporter nice and I’m now 67 years old. This song never fails to grab me.

What a beautiful performance of this timeless song by this beautiful, talented man. Love you James ❤❤❤😊😊. Your voice sounds so rich and full.
Has there ever been an artist whose style is more instantly recognizable and unique? I doubt it.
I agree. From Puerto Rico. Blessings
This is especially beautiful.❤🙏
Damn, he gets better with age. I still remember hearing this song when I was a kid, it struck me as the perfect mix of sad and beautiful.
I hope to see him live one day.

His guitar work is so solid.

James, You are Mr. Number One!!!! Fantastic!!! I'm learning your Guitar Playin'...nearly
I love this version. Slowed down and melancholy❤

Não me canso de ouvi-lo! Amo.. show😍👏👏👏👏❤😎🇧🇷
I saw him perform solo in the mid-70's in a college basketball hall. He sounds good in this performance 20 years later as he did then. Terrific.
❤ just wonderful!
Wow the way he changed the last verse bass notes to just pedal the A was so different in the best way
Smooth as butter! ❤
I forget the song but James makes reference to something being smooth as a gravy sandwich. I think it was on the October Road album.
The audio is exceptional. Fitting.
❤

Does anyone know what make of guitar this is? I don’t recognize the symbol on the headstock. It’s got a beautiful sound.
It's an Olson. Handmade guitar by James Olson. olsonguitars.com/
Just yesterday mornin', they let me know you were gone
Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus?
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows, when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby
One more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain, now
