My favorite part of your videos are the explanations of use case for the throws. Thank you for helping this budding old but new frisbee player learn how to throw!

You mentioned how the scoober is used to attack the opposite break space to a hammer, would you ever consider using a scoober that doesn't helix to attack the same space as a hammer?

Definitely useful here yep! Making sure the disc is upright at a steep 90⁰ will ensure it doesn't helix. However with distance it will inevitably helix off so this only works so far.

Great videos that are helping me learn about ultimate. I had a hard time understanding this one though. "A great break throw for a forced backhand." This means nothing to a newb like me. What is a break throw? What is a forced backhand? I'm not sure I understand what the scoober does that you can't do with other throws.

Yea that chain is kind of long, the simplest of zone defences is the 3 man cup which involves thrower be guarded by 3 defensive players, one close mark whose job is to close down most of one side, for newer teams playing against newer teams, this tends to be the left side of the thrower because that's the backhand side of most right handed throwers and most newer players struggle with forehand more. the other two defenders stand a little bit farther from the thrower and guard about 45° straight towards the offense side, this leaves an open space for the thrower on their right side called 'the lane'. The side that is closed off (here left for thrower) is called 'break side'. This whole situation is a 'force forehand'.
The hammer throw can get the disc to the break side over the defenders blocking.
Just flipping the sides here would mean the thrower is in a force backhand and to get to the break side now, you can throw the scoober. A break throw just means a throw to the break side where it's more difficult to for the thrower but more open space for their teammates to attack.

Whats the benefit of using this as opposed to a high release backhand to plop it over the defender in the clip at 0:42

Easier to ensure it will get over the mark. Falls, so if you can place it well you don’t have to worry about an elevated nose angle floating a backhand too much. Easier to get an io curve (helix). But a high release backhand can also work there, sure.

So why don't we use thumbers as the counterpart to the hammer? Why a scoober?

Scoobers are my preference and I make the videos :) :)

Some people do actually use the thumber as a counterpart, but I think the scoober is still preferred because you can translate a lot more of your practice throwing a forehand to it over having to spend time solely practicing a thumber.

Lefty schooner is the counterpart. Thumbers are hard to master.

i think mostly its because you have a pretty dramatic change in grip.. going from forehand into a scoober requires little to no change in how you are holding the disk just only a pivot to the other side and raising your arm... this transition is what makes it more effective during games...
