    Did you know that there is an abandoned Russian settlement in the Arctic called Barentsburg? Wait until you see this story, it will blow your mind!!
    I had to take a 2-hour boat ride from Longyearbyen (the biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Norwegian control, over to Barentsburg (the second-biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Russian control.
    The two towns could not be any more different.
    After visiting 169 countries and more than 500 cities, I find Barentsburg to be the absolute most bizarre town in the world.
    It was purchased by the Soviet Union about 90 years ago from the Dutch because of the on-site coal mine... While there are about 400 Russian & Ukrainian miners still working here today, it's a failing business, and it's obvious that Russia keeps this place alive because they want a presence in the Arctic (think natural resources, trade routes, etc).
    Walking around Barentsburg gave me flash backs to North Korea. Abandoned buildings. Seemingly staged people and culture. I still can't quite wrap my head around this!

      He is from the United States, so he cant avoid it. All that russophobia there always gets in the mind of the people who watch the mass media. But he was honest about the intentions of Russia having that town. The job of that people is to be there, the government pay them for that. Its a job after all, I don't mean it is a easy job. The weather there is harsh.
      The Norwegian part is way more visited because I don't see the media attacking Norway in any way.
      But at least he shown the place, so people with economical resources can go there just to check how weird really is.

    • @jolenethellama
      @jolenethellama 5 лет назад +11

      And also during winter time in Svalbard, there is no sunlight, which wouldn't make for a great video. Along with snow, wind and extremely low temperatures, blissards etc. Whilst in the summertime you have to black out your windows to get some sleep at night due to the midnight sun. So it's a much better time to visit.

      @Mor Dor you dont get it. Norwegians are only paid by the government if they work in actual governmental positions. However, russia pays all people to live in barentsburg, because the actual coal mining is not sustainable, so russian state pays them for them to continue living there, while actually loosing money on the coal mining. Because if russia don't pay them enough, they will leave Svalbard, and russia does not want that.

    • @olanordmann1252
      @olanordmann1252 5 лет назад +22

      @Mor Dor coal mine is owned by the russian state.
      It really doesn't matter, but the point was to say that russia is paying workers to live in Svalbard, they don't make any money from the coal, they only want them there so that russia has a presence in Svalbard, which is kind of peculiar.

      Roof2 everyone knows Svalbard is Norwegian. It’s as far as I know only the small mining colony Brantesburg that is Russian. Why would Russia have a consulate in Svalbard if they owned it?
      Because of a treaty from 1920 Russia has rights to exploit natural resources, but Svalbard is still under Norwegian sovereignty. The Russians there even have Norwegian email-addresses and phone numbers.

    Barentsburg isn't technically Russian. It's a Russian/Ukrainian settlement, but it's under Norwegian laws and rules. Russia has no say in what they can do there and everything has to go through the Norwegian government. For example after the war in Ukraine, the Norwegian government banned Russian vehicles from entering the Norwegian border. Not allowing them to send Russian products to the small settlement. So it's not in "Russia", and it's not under Russian control
    For example, if Norway would raise their import tax, it'd also be raised in Barentsburg. If Norway would ban certain things, it would also be banned in Barentsburg :P
    If you guys think otherwise, here's a snippit from the Norway-Russia disaster diplomacy for svalbard PDF:
    "In the Russian settlements, anyone local is prioritised for disaster-related action, but within the context of oversight and support from the local Norwegian authorities-which is how the Svalbard Treaty (1920) is meant to operate. For instance, irrespective of Russian laws on DRR and disaster response (Government of Russia, 1994), all settlements on Barentsburg must adhere to Norwegian laws (Government of Norway, 1925, 2001)."

    I was in Pyramiden and Barentsburg in 1972, and besides these 2 Soviet towns, there was a third Soviet town, at that time the Soviets did not allow us to land our seaplane by the docks, but the Norwegian governor came in by helicopter and told the Soviets that could not deny us entry on Norwegian land. In Barenstburg there was 1800 people living, and another 1000 people in Pyramiden, and another 300 in the third town. More Russians than there were Norwegian people in the two towns.
    It is a boring place but my grandfather was one of the men that built the raliroad in Ny Ålesund back in 1915.
    At that time there was 800 people living in Ny Ålesund, today it is 35... Longeyarbyen has around 2500 people, and rhey will srop mining coal by next year. Until 1974 they had their own banknotes, I still have one of them. Company money.
    Today ladies from Thailand and the Philippines move here to open foodselling eneterprises (no visa required), but they are just hoping to meet a Norwegian to marry.....and then divorce, and invite their whole family....

    For people who do not know the back ground of Svalbard, it was given after many arguments to Norwegia after WW1 and after the foundation of the League of Nation but under this rules

    -No one need a pass to be there
    etc.
