Since soojin's departure, shuhua has taken over soojin's verses in oh my god, latata, and hann (alone). While i miss soojin dearly, i do love shuhua's voice on soojin's oh my god verse 💜
Small addition that the references to purple in Oh My God also have queer themes, as the color lavender and purple have a lot of historical connections to the LGBTQ community.
while im here, a little hann (alone) fun fact is the whistle throughout the entire song is minnie. and that its part of a trilogy of songs with a storyline which soyeon made together, Hann (alone), Hann (alone in winter) and hwaa!! personally i love their dramatic and almost cinematic music videos? Theyre known widely as concept queens bc of the girls self contributing so much and always changing what theyre doing but also i'd love for them to revisit their previous styles of music with new interpretations since theyve grown so much since debut!!
According to wikipedia the song's lyrics was conceptualized around the theme of 'self-trust' when encountering reality and experiencing feelings of rejection, confusion, recognition, and dignity. The specific lyrics "Oh my god / she took me to the sky / Oh my god / she showed me all the stars" sparked listeners questioning as to whom is being referred to. Soyeon responded that the imagery and lyrics represent love in many forms, and that she will leave it to the listener to interpret it their own way.
Lion and Oh My God are still my very favorite (G)I-dle mv's. They are both great art and transcend Kpop. Oh My God is fundamentally about gay love and society viewing it as corruption. There is an English version where the lyrics are much more explicit.
Oh my god has a couple different interpretations, but the more common (and my personal) interpretation is that it is a song about sapphic love (falling in love with a woman). The lyrics allude to falling into sin and fighting temptations, and the music video references biblical heaven and hell. The music video is theorized to be presented as Soyeon, Minnie, and Yuqi falling to "sin" in three different ways. Minnie falls and is tortured in her descent. Yuqi falls suddenly and too quick to react. And Soyeon embraces sin. Soojin is a temptress/demon (in mv bts she even says "my role is to seduce all the girls") shown with the rainbow flashing lights and alluring behavior. Miyeon is an angel watching others fall. Shuhua sees others fall as well, but also empathizes with their experiences, thus tells them to "do as you must and fall in love". With this she is approached by Soojin but turns her away, while Soyeon embraces Soojin (the whispery scene). I think the focus in "sin" and queerness arent explicitly calling queerness bad, but presenting it in the societal view of queerness, but the lyrics and video I feel are explaining the struggle some queer people have with their identity when they are religious. Its such a dynamic and interesting concept. My favorite music video of their discography.
For Lion, as Soyeon wrote it thinking about The Lion King movie, the hand gesture in choreo during the chorus is the same gesture that is doing the lion hero in the movie in his dance show in the zoo, he's posing in the same position. I loved this reference to the movie, so funny to see that in a kpop group choreo 😁
I love when people recognize how talented Soojin is even right now in her solo career. Ever since she left the group I became so depressed cause she was the only one who was relatable in my opinion. And idk me and Soojin have something in common like a lot of things honestly except for like age,and first/last names. I’ll tell you some things that we have in common. Our fav colors are blue,we’re both Korean,We both have long hair,we both have prob almost the same personality’s,and shes pretty tall for her age like me. (Btw please don’t hate on me cause I brought Soojin up.) ❤❤❤
Don't forget to see HWAA M/V ...you will love the chorography that tell the story of the song. Uh OH M/V and the perform 'Revange' and Doll' in world tour 2024 too. You will see them in the concert. And see the 'Change' live clip and Dark (x-file) snippet. No chorography for Both but the acting is so good.❤
HANN(Alone), Hann(Alone in winter) and HWAA are a trilogy....so.....just FYI ALso you can say LATATA is the prequel to this trilogy.... Funny side story, IDLE would joke about "Dance is not everything" because in their early days, their choreo instructor was really not satisified with their dance performance. But they kept getting awards and wins.....so in the end the instructor just changed her mind and told all trainees in Cube that dance is not everything....be a good singer 1st...
I-DLE uses choreography to tell the story, It isn't just dance. This is different from another group. The choreography has not to be obstruction to their vocal when they live too.
As a dancer, i completely agree. I looove to see difficult choreography, but if it hinders the chance to sing completely live consistently, it's not always worth it.
We start the music video with minnie being dragged in a white space that looks clinical and devoid of color, then quite literally CRAWLING to a passageway in the wall that leads into the next scene which is starkly in contrast to the white and full of so much color. like night and day. then the beat kicks in, and finally an almost royal ethereal-looking yuqi appears. everything looks full and so lively. it’s minnie yearning to be in a world full of color which this girl who ‘showed her all the stars’ gave to her. her wanting to fall deeper into this love that’s so colorful. it’s basically a fantasy. she clearly wants nothing more than to get out of this white stained clean almost hospital-like place. running from these guard looking figures with black handprints and black splatter all over them. i think these guards/figures are supposed to represent society, and this white space is supposed to respect a mental hospital. being queer used to be seen as a mental illness, and usually being out in society can sometimes feels like you have some kind of sickness or something deadly wrong with you that needs to be purified. but clearly the guards/figure are the ones with black handprints splattered on their plain white outfits, and minnie is in pure white. they’re the ones who are de purifying her. and in the end minnie is corrupted BY the guards/figures. the whole music video minnie is shown in this room going crazy trying to get away from these figures, stuck in this white room/prison. but if you pay attention, about a quarter of the way through, she takes her fingers and makes a gun motion and shoots herself. bang. a few seconds later you can see her leaking blood on the floor and another few seconds a clip shows her with bloody nose. i think her character arc in the music video is supposed to show that too much repression can sully a person, and make them so alone the only way they could think of getting out is killing themselves. and that she could never truly accept herself, and was left in the mud, the same place she was trying to save herself from, the same place the people in white spent the whole music video trying to drag her away from. after a clip of minnie in the white room, then we get soyeons rap, which is i think, a difference between someone stuck trying to repress themselves(minnie) and someone who is embracing themself and saying they’re fine with sin if they get to be together with the one they love(soyeon). they’re meant to represent the different sides of the same coin. remember, the only two members who were ever in that white room and the only members who started out in that white room were soyeon and minnie. one got out, one stayed in, they both ended in the same exact place, and were again the only members in the mud/blood in the end. soyeon was smiling and smearing it on herself, minnie was stuck trying to escape and hating herself for it. here are a few lyrics from the rap that i think describe minnie in that room, and soyeon remembering what it was like there in the beginning: “The self-control and moderation you gave me “Have torn into pieces in the dark black hole” “It's unable to control, like sugar-coated drugs” i think that says it all😭😭 that’s just my interpretation, many people have many different interpretations and ideas, but i think even that this music video was even made and that soyeon fought for it makes me so proud no matter what the real truth is. the video was so incredibly intentional that i can’t believe anything other than that the meaning was intentional, too. especially when soyeon said this in an interview about why she was so set on the ‘she’ pronouns: “I just write what's on my mind. i didn't want to limit that 'she' to a certain being or a certain definition, so it's open to anything. all kinds of love are valuable and must be respected.” gonna shed a tear my queen knows her core audience 🥹😭🥲 i was a bit confused about the red and the implication of hell in the end, but when you actually look into how korean society sees and operates around lesbians you understand. it’s a completely different culture around it and this video was made years ago when it was even worse. just a year earlier gidle got into a controversy where they were ridiculed by knetizens(knetizens is what they call korean citizens that are the main fanbase for all kpop and not specific fandoms. so basically just all of korea) for kissing each other on stage after winning an award. they got in hot shit for just kissing each other on the cheek as a celebration and this song was released a year later. coincidental? maybe? maybe not, but worth mentioning!! but that’s just to say it’s pretty bad and the fact this video came out is crazy as there’s a big don’t ever speak about it just will it away culture.korea is pretty conservative and even the mention of it is pretty taboo. even though it’s slowly getting better especially in recent years and i’m glad idols have gotten a lot more comfortable, they couldn’t have become comfortable without the generation of kpop idols who spoke out and really took risky steps for lgbtq+ people in korea. the first ones that come to mind are sistar and GLAM, park jungmin, song ji eun, K.Will, and of course Holland!!! and all the other kpop idols and popular actors and shows that took steps to normalize it and especially HUMANIZE IT. and that’s just half the fight. a lot of what kpop idols and actors do don’t translate into regular living. it’s just art and special cases. it’s the same with the clothes they wear and almost everything else. i did a bit of research of what it’s like to be a lesbian in korea, and the general consensus is that it’s extremely hard, one quora user said: “People point, stare, laugh, and whisper. Moms will shield their children's eyes and the elderly will shake their heads in contempt. Churchgoers approaching us and: Beginning to pray Telling us we're going to hell Shouting at us Hitting us with their Bible (true story) Schoolgirls taking photos of us to "show their friends later” Street vendors refusing to sell food to us Mothers telling their children "study hard or you'll become a homo" It's bad enough that my family disowned me for dating a woman (which is a common occurrence by the way), I don't need my entire country to treat me like I'm diseased.” (this was an anonymous poster, she should be the first post that pops up when you search “what is it like to be a lesbian in korea” on google. this is just the one i picked because i thought her wording was beautiful. she seems like a wonderful soul.) i think that’s all!! i only focused on two characters gidle showed in the music video but there’s so much more nitty gritty about this music video that i could literally interpret it in like five different ways for hours. these two were just the first to stand out ❤️❤️ goddamn. im sorry for the fucking essay this is my first day taking adhd meds💋❤️😭 i’m obviously having trouble figuring out when to stop. love the vid

Her posts are so beautiful and precise cause of her ballet background, and the power of her dance, it from her background in Hip Hop street dance. ❤
She really is the ACE of K pop!

Yesss I agree! If they enjoyed those concepts, I think they could really elevate it with their experience now!
Saw them in concert last Saturday and Sunday in Tokyo. They were amazing!!!!!
Super ladies indeed!!!!

You HAVE TO watch Lion Queendom performance. You’d get chills all over you i promise 😃
I can't take my eyes off soojin omg her dance is crazy and her presence is insane her dance is so powerful
If I'm not mistaken, Soojin has experience with ballroom dancing or dancesport
You might be thinking of Xiaoting, I'm pretty sure Soojin did Jazz dance
The one thing I don't like about their OT6 choreo is that it tends to be more like choreo for 5 with 1 person behind (and hidden/upstaged by) the center. Even if they rotate who gets concealed (as well as who gets center time) it just doesn't seem quite right.
I need you to give a listen to their bsides also ❤
