Hwaa can mean both 'fire' and 'flower' depending on the chinese character! Hann (Alone), Hann (Alone in the Winter) and Hwaa are a trilogy about a break-up (or other kindof separation, but mainly break-up), where Hann has kind of a bitter feeling, Hann (AitW) is about the loneliness and a coldness of being now alone, whereas in Hwaa they "set a fire" in the cold, and from that "a new flower blooms" and the speakers spring comes.
Kind of a common theme in most of gidle songs that the lyrics seem poetic but confusing at a first glance but when you start to actually analyze (or just watch Soyeon's interviews haha) there's a lot of meaning! Especially later on, like with Tomboy or Nxde I could probably write like a 10-page analysis lol

Soyeon was the one at the beginning of "Dumdi Dumdi" who you were saying is beautiful. Before (G)I-dle, when she was around 17 y/o she was on a couple competition shows where she was known for her rapping and producing skills. She wanted to become an idol and Korean viewers said she was talented but too ugly to be an idol. Can you believe that? Korean society has some very specific beauty standards. Soyeon was hurt and saddened but thankfully she didn't give up her dream.

Lee Young Ji had the first verse, she's the tallest one and had the Pink hair. She was only nineteen years old here but had already previously proven herself to be able to hold her own in underground rap competitions. She's a BEAST. She also had a cameo in one other Soyeon song/ MV called Beam Beam (from her solo album called Windy).
Young Ji also recently has had a show at her own apartment where she will invite one or two guests and they drink alcohol while Young Ji interviews them. That could be where you have seen her before. Soloists, guys from boy groups, ladies from girl groups, doesn't matter, she has interviewed several people. Girl group Twice member Chaeyoung did some artwork for Young Ji's channel, while having that first interview and drinking. The art was REALLY cute so Young Ji kept it and used it with Chaeyoung's full permission. Chae came back in the second season of Young Ji's show and brought fellow member Nayeon along. That video really blew up with reactors.
For some reason, Season One of Young Ji's show is on one YT channel and Season Two is on a completely different (but similarly named) channel...both belong to Young Ji, though. It's really confusing to me.
So, look up Young Ji No Prepare and name off a guest, and then look up Young Ji Absolutely No Prepare, and name off a guest. :)

    Beware the essay! :D
Hann and Hwaa are parts of a trilogy of songs. It starts with Hann in 2018, continues with another song ALSO called Hann that is on the same album as Hwaa (I Burn; though this newer Hann sadly does not have an MV), and flows into Hwaa. The thing you need to know about is what "han" is first: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural)
"Han is frequently translated as sorrow, spite, rancor, regret, resentment or grief, among many other attempts to explain a concept that has no English equivalent." But the same pronunciation also has other meanings as well. The 2018 Hann is originally named 한(一), where the Chinese character in parentheses gives the intended alternate meaning: "one". The song sings about getting over an ex who hurt you: "I erase your trace in my bruised heart", and the MV styling is a desert. This is why the English translation is "Hann (Alone)". The second Hann, on this album, is titled 한(寒); here, the Chinese character says "cold" (with the English translation "Hann (Alone in Winter)". The lyrics there are about feeling as if your heart is frozen, realising that you were lying to yourself about erasing the ex from the memory, knowing that you still think of them every single day, and you wonder if the winter in your heart will ever turn to spring. Here's where Hwaa comes in, with its multiple meanings, again explicitly stated in Chinese characters: 화(火花). Both characters are pronounced "hwa" in Korean. The first means "fire", but is also used metaphorically for "anger" ("I am angry" is literally translated as "fire is coming out"). The second is "flower". The combination of the two characters ("fire flower") means "spark" in Chinese and Japanese (pronounced "huǒhuā" and "hibana", respectively), though it is not used in Korean (but if you replace the Chinese characters with native korean words, you get 불꽃 "bulkkot", a word for "fireworks", which was Soyeon's hope for this song's impact - this meaning is present in Japanese and Chinese as well, but the characters are reversed: 花火 "hanabi" and "huāhuǒ"). The song uses all of these meanings: wanting to spark up the fires of anger to burn up the leftover resentment ("han"), and warm up the heart so flowers of new love can blossom again. Super cool, super deep, in the way how all the wordplay about "han" and "hwa" was used. And it's not the end either: Soyeon and Minnie said that Moon was postponed to be on this album, because it matches the mood, as you look at the sky and... feel. The rest of the songs are also meaningful in their own place in the album. In Miyeon's words, "We tried to express this album as cold winter, hot fire and beautiful but stinging flowers. It also has the meaning of overcoming the scars of separation and being in full bloom again.”
Hwaa was also translated into English. Soyeon said they paid special attention with the British songwriter Phildel to make sure the English version captures the exact same feelings like the original. One of the very few English translations in Kpop I wholeheartedly recommend.

Also the girls themselves are confused about what they want to be called istg lmao. When the introduce themselves in English they say “Hi we’re (G)I-DLE!” but when they introduce themselves in Korean they say (translated) “We are IDLE” dropping the Korean word for woman. But when they are introduced in Korea they called them by their full name “Yeo-ja Idle” ?? And then during the Tomboy comeback they insisted on being called just Idle and asked fans not to say the G. Then suddenly in Nxde era the G came back. So I’ve officially deduced that it does NOT MATTER. Even though some fans will bite your head off for saying the G.

HWAA's song title has the chinese characters 花 (huā) and 火 (huǒ) wich mean flower and fire. Because of the similarity, they play with these two meanings in HWAA, at first because they sing about a relationship that ended and they use fire to burn it or get warm (I don't remember exactly) and then it grows a red flower from that past relationship (that's why at the end HWAA is translated as flower and not fire). Along the whole song they mention fire-cold-winter and flowers-blossoms. This song is also in english and chinese; you should check out the english version! (For me, gi-dle's english versions are the less awkward).

You're spot on when it comes to IDLE's concept/ sound-hopping. It's owed to Soyeon journey as a writer and producer. She is simply evolving with her art and we get to witness it through different songs 😊
Hwaa is the analogy of finding love(fire) again after heartbreak, which is why the imagery is all icy at the beginning, thawing/ flowering later.

The way I see Hwa's meaning is mostly flower, and the reason why they may have chosen to use the theme of winter and snow in this is that the first flower to bloom in spring is literally called Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) and it is often poking out above the snow as early as January or February.
So taking this into consideration, a snow flower could be appropriate for the mv, the girls act as the flower part as we see them gracing the snowy parts of the sets.
Imagine being this kind of flower, the passion, energy and strive it is needed to be the first one to bloom during snow is the same as wanting to move on from a breakup or separation. We can all see how profound the meaning of Hwa is and it's one of the things I truly love about the song and (G)-Idle in general.

  • @rin9001

    Thanks for the reaction
HWAA means both Fire and Flower (Chinese character in parentheses) this song is about lighting a fire to melt the long winter (frozen feelings state after a breakup) to let a new flower born (new spring)
HANN means Alone (kind of, not the literal translation) this song is about a clean breakup, the lyrics of the song are inspired by a poem
HWAA is the continuation of HANN, more exactly:
    - HANN (Alone) 2018: clean break up, the narrator cut of the ex with no remaining feeling
    - HANN (alone in winter) 2021 bside of I BURN album: the narrator still has feeling for their ex and can't move on, like frozen in a long winter
    - HWAA (fire flower) 2021 title track (and 2nd track after HANN alone in winter) of I BURN album: the narrator want to move on, burn the remaining feeling to reborn anew, melt the long winter to let a new spring comes
Dumdi Dumdi is actually about the summer of a person (20ish) when everything is burning in passion, the song is a memento for the years to come, when the narrator becomes more old less passionate, to remind the summer days with happy nostalgia to move on when times are not so bright (Minnie bridge)

I know you already did a TWICE guide video but there is a much updated one that is super useful, and samples clips from their shows and some songs. It's from MinguinMina (the YT channel name) and it's over 58 minutes long but trust me, It's the most well put together guide I have even seen and you'll definitely learn a lot about twice and the members so much more

The first song I actually remember listening to from G Idle is dumdi dumdi and boy was I not ready for what I was getting into, on the BEST way. I still listen to HWAA constantly to this day because it's such a good song (even tho they gave Shuhua like 3 words). And I think that was Soojin's last comeback💔 This is my first time hearing ITBBN and honestly they went off. The are the women who challenge the stereotype for women in music in Korea. You should watch/listen to BiBi Vengence and Animal Farm. They're honestly gorgeous/badass songs that I think you'll enjoy. She challenges all of those stereotypes and standards in both of these songs. The storyline of the videos makes them 10 × better too. (Little bit of a warning for Animal Farm tho, fake blood, weapons. I
Without spoiling too much, it's kind of like am action movie.)

I find it funny people hate on G Idle for Hann and HWAA being "similar" but have no issues with BP having the same song title track basically for 5 years 💀😂
Also I love BIBI and Lee yeong ji... Soloist or featuring they ALWAYS deliver... ASH B girls back home ft Lee yeong ji is wicked. ASH B is a wicked artist btw if haven't seen her. Don't have to react but I suggest checking her out. Part time, money also bangers.
Also alot of reactors I have seen find it weird she say bring bring ring ring ding ding as though she just bad at English... She is making telephone noises. It baffles me other reactors don't realize that 💀💀😂
