SNL has always had the same hit/miss ratio. People who say "it's just not funny anymore" need to pick a random episode from their "glory years" and watch it all the way through and see. The only thing is, being almost 50 years old now, they have to be careful not to repeat bits. Oh, and the fact that musical guests suck now isn't SNL's fault (the music greats die)

I still ask people in the car with me when we pass the police if they have SCMODS. So many great quotable lines. "You want I should wash the dead bugs off your windshield?" Elwood: "Its 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, its dark and we're wearing sunglasses." Jake: "Hit it."🤣 This was back when we could make jokes and laugh about things without fear of offending and getting cancelled. Truly a better world.

Joliet Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) Blues were legit. It helped that they had a great backing band including : Steve Cropper-Guitar, Donald "Duck" Dunn-Bass, Matt "Guitar" Murphy-Guitar, Lou Marini, Tom Malone, Tom Scott and Alan Rubin on Horns, and Paul Schaeffer-Keyboards. Mr. Schaeffer also went on to lead the band on David Letterman's Late Night show. There is a very good movie called "The Blues Brothers" and a not so great one called "Blues Brothers 2000". Watch the first one, and look for a bunch of great cameos from some amazing singers, don't want to give it all away but they are awesome.

The Blues Brothers was Belushi and Ackroyd's homage to the great soul music of the '60s. This tune was a huge 1967 hit for Sam (Moore) and Dave (Prater) on the Memphis-based Stax Records label. Many of the musicians here were on the original soul hits, including guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. You guys owe it to yourselves to dig deeper into the Stax catalogue. Timeless, classic soul at its very best!

Steve Cropper and Donald "DucK" Dunn were part ofd Booker T. and trhe MGs, the house band for Stax Records. Much of the music the Blues Brothers played came straight from Stax, with Steve and Donald playing behined them. Stax was the main competitor to Motown in the 1960s. Right in this song, they are playing the same song they played for Sam & Dave on the original recording.

The original SNL cast, pre-1980 was the best. It was always funny and the best guest stars and musical groups. This is how the concept of the Blue Brothers started out. They were only supposed to perform a couple of times on the show, but it was such a hit, they went on to do some albums and the "Blues Brothers" movie, which if you haven't seen, you really must. There was a second movie "Blues Brothers 200", which was lousy, but great soundtrack.

The emcee is Garrett Morris. He was an member of the original SNL cast. Steve Cropper (guitar) and Duck Dunn (bass) were members of Booker T and The MG's. Booker T and The MG's were the main studio musicians for Stax Records. The album, Briefcase Full of Blues was recorded at The Universal Amphitheater in Southern California, when they opened for comedian, Steve Martin. It's an album of covers of old blues and soul tunes. It's an excellent album. The band was made up of most of the SNL house band. They were excellent musicians. They were a real touring band for a while. The song, Soul Man is a cover. It was done originally by Sam and Dave...

I got to see this band live at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. I had no idea who they were because a friend invited me and I had never yet heard of the band. Of course as soon as they came out on the stage I recognized John and Dan. Man!! What a show they put on and every member of the band was absolutely incredible. They did a movie called "The Blues Brothers" you should check it out, it is great. They were a real band for a while and for a movie. When I saw them the show was being recorded so as each person came into the theatre, we had to sign a card that said we would not be eligible for any royalties if we were shown on the footage. This band made at least one album and got lots of radio play. They were just too much fun!

The Blues Brothers were originally John Belushi and Dan Akroyd with the classic "Memphis Group" from Stax/Volt backing them up. This clip was their debut to the world. After this skit and performance, they were signed to Atlantic Records. They recorded their first album, which was mainly covers of classic blues, R&B, and Soul songs, went on tour, and soon made the first Blues Brothers movie. Belushi and Akroyd left Saturday Night Live shortly after the Blues Brothers took off.

Blues Brothers was a famous skit from the glory days of SNL. They made a movie out of it that is just insane, involving dozens of musical superstars, 60 police cars, the national guard, the entire fire department of Chicago, and Carrie Fischer wielding a rocket launcher. There were dozens of great repeating skits from this era, including Weekend Update with Rosanne Rossana Danna, Emily Litella who always called Chevy Chase "Cheddar Cheese," Point Counterpoint, Mr. Bill, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, the Killer Bees, Samurai Laundry and the Olympia Restaurant. The best one I ever saw was Gilda Radner doing a musical spoof of Mick Jagger, but I can't find it anywhere.
