Oh man, this hits so close to home and I identify so much with Clare. I'm in my 30s now, but when I was 16/17 back in high school, I had a huge crush on a teacher (female teacher and I am a woman). We chatted over email and addressed each other by nicknames, but she told me to use her professional name in the halls. She told me I was beautiful. I sent her a bouquet of flowers on Valentine's Day. It was a full-on emotional relationship for about a year. Then she slowly started pulling away from me and wouldn't tell me why (I guessed it was because she didn't want to get in trouble as I could put her career at risk). After a while, I just left it as I got the hint that she wanted to end things. Couple of months after that, I graduated and moved out of the city to attend university in another city, and never saw or talked to her again. Every now and again, I think back and wonder how she's been doing.

I like the husband's attitude. He is not happy about what is happening, but also refuses to blame a teenage girl or show bitterness toward her. It's like in the story of the North Wind and the Sun: to get her to let go, he didn't hit her hard, yell at her, or scare her; no, he gently reminded her that what was happening was wrong, not only because their kind of relationship is illegal, but because it was something for which their lives would be only the first ones to be ruined.

What you like about the husband is what i really dislike. In my opinion, that conversation had to be taken place between the teacher and Claire. Otherwise, it seems to me like a real threatening what he says to the girl. Husband should have talked to her wife. This conversation only shows his marriage is over.

@@astreabof9703 You're right that ideally a slightly different conversation would happen between the teacher and the student. But I think the writer suggests the teacher really isn't up to taking it on directly, as she would have had ample opportunity. In the scene with just the student and the teacher the teacher pretends like nothing is going on. When her husband throws the wife's cigarette away, is it showing that he is a controlling jerk, or is the writer showing another example of the teacher doing something that is bad for her and others around her? Much like the teacher's unhealthy dynamic with the student that she indulges in to the point the husband picks up on it?

@@astreabof9703Who is to say he didn't talk to his wife? He probably did but as shown with the smoking infront of her student scene and having a students phone number she just doesn't care too much. That being said they have a child so it's not that simple to just end it.

This is actually a superb short. Loved the idea that nothing is explained directly but the plot revels itself by itself in just 10 minutes. It’s like we are watching just the end of the movie but can fully understand the whole background story. Great example that sometimes less is more. Mature short.

Wow, this is amazing. The acting, pacing, dialog, a solid but spare plot that gets the point across with no extra filler, unlike so many films these days that hit you over the head with a moral or message. And, this film masters the art of artlessness. Someone wrote the lines and directed the actors, but it feels like you're there watching real people talking the way real people actually talk and act. Bravo!

This is my interpretation: at some point, Miss Larson and Clare were very close emotionally, maybe Clare spent her days after school in her room and they bonded. But instead of an appropriate mentor/student relationship, both parties began to feel romantically towards each other, and perhaps one of them acted on it (I would bet it to be Clare; as a teen, she’s more impulsive). Suddenly, Miss Larson realized they went too far and cut Clare off as anything but a student.
Larson’s husband knew everything, and was, rightfully, pissed off. I mean his wife has formed an extremely inappropriate relationship with her student, I would be horrified personally. He’s probably the reason she’s upset, also maybe the fact she “broke up with” Clare. My problem with the short; I wish Miss Larson had more screen time. We barely know her, you know

I very complex dynamic concern this well made, well-acted short film! As to the husband's involvement that could have been trimmed or dis guarded all together not involving the husband. However as is this short has professionalism written all over it! Script, cast, tech crew and direction are just straight forward uncluttered and clean! KUDOS to Lauren Minnerath!!

folks, what it is, is this: the woman is probably gay or bi-sexual, and is married to this guy. he either knew before they got married or found out afterward. the teacher has probably already had affair(s) and he knows it. the teacher started a relationship with the girl - who knows how far it went - and now wants to end it - hence the numerous txt messages to the teacher that go unresponded. chances are, the husband told his wife that he knows and to end it - hence, the non-response. is he controlling? probably? seems like he knows the 'signs' and is simply telling the girl to go away. he's seen it before, and he'll see it again. in this case, he is right. if people found out about the relationship, the teacher would end up in jail, the girl's life would be affected and maybe even ruined. he gives the girl some good advice, but in the end, he just wants to stay married to the teacher - in the end, he's basically telling the girl, 'I know, so you'd better stop it if you know what's good for you.'

  • @astreabof9703
    @astreabof9703 Год назад +33

In my opinion, nothing really happened. Just the husband has the strong conviction that her wife has fallen in love with that student, basically by the way she talks about her. If anything more happens, being in love is not illegal. The attitude of the husband implies a threatening for the girl... that is illegal. Husband should have talked with her wife. In the vid, teacher doesn't seem in love with the student but she seems very sad. Maybe husband is very jealous.
The student seems to be in love with the teacher, taking into account all the messages she sent to her, without any answer.. Nothing more.
But worse of all is the effect husband's talking has on the girl. She enters in a self-destructive phase.
    Really creepy this short...

Well, no. He says "if this got out, it wouldn't just affect Mary, it wouldn't be good for you either" meaning there IS something that would have consequences. A simple crush can't be it, since as you said, it's not illegal. But a teacher having a physical relationship with a 17-year-old student (underage in the US) would be.

The problem I have with this film is that the person doing wrong is the wife, but then they find a way to make it where it’s the menacing husband at the end being the bad guy… He’s a victim in this too, just as much as an underaged high school student.

Clare seems more concerned for the teacher, while the opposite relationship might just be fictional in the husband's jealous mind...

I think it's certainly put out there that Clare and teacher have had some sort of sexual relationship, i like that they don't show you but it's all in the actors actions and in the words. I don't think this is a case of Clare having a simple crush on her teacher. I do think her and teacher have gone beyond that. I wouldn't be overly surprised with the way the husband reacts that this is the first time his wife has played away from home either maybe with other female students or other women.
I think this isn't the first time her husband has probably had to end one of his wife's affairs cause she hasn't the guts to end it.
