First saw this in I think 1984, when the BBC did their Jazz on a summers day weekend. I was 19 at the time and fell in love with this set. For the next ten years I was a regular at Ronnie Scott's club and heard lots of big names and a few of the guys in this band. Now all these years later it makes me sad to think that with the exception of Pete King all these fellas have left us. But this great, sensational music lives on.
I've just read the biography of Tubby Hayes, 'The long shadow of a little Giant' by Simon Spillett. An absolutely brilliant read on the life of a World Class musician.
Although Tubby's arrangers produced an amalgam of sounds, styles and qualities, overall his approach to jazz was way ahead of its time. He himself was a musical genius - gew ever argued that aspect of a wonderful musician.

Tubby was the goods man. Holy cow.

Nice to see Ronnie Ross doubling on alto.
Yes he was.
I believe that's a mellophone or mellophonium, used by Stan Kenton's band.
Beautiful arrangement. Nice solo from Tubbs on vibes. Was Jimmy Deuchar playing a mellohphone?
Mellophonium
