The things that make them different is how they are on the inside. Magnus is a great commander and embodies a realistic, tactical, militaristic leader, where Optimus is more of a living legend of myth, who never backs down until the very end, and his commitment being his greatest feat, making him surpass what his body should be achiving. And when he isn't fighting, he is a gentle giant.

Now I'm not sure if he is optim's twin or brother in some universes, because ultra Magnus without armor looks like white Optimus prime but for example when I consider g1, I think that just like when Alpha trion remade Orion pax and ariel into optimus and elite , so maybe he converted either dion to ultra magnus or autobot magnum to ultra magnus. In short, the ultra msgnus design has always felt a bit like Optimus on steroids to me. ha hah I'm sad that ultra Magnus doesn't get as much credit in the new series and movies because he's a very interesting character. I would like a universe where ultra Magnus would command elite units or wreckers to sell us more of his potential and not always be a soaked Optimus backup, the design is cool just like Optimus but he doesn't have as much screen time as Optimus, while in the animated he was the most important autobot .
