Trafalgar Street, and Brighton Station's waste ground car park

- Shot in September 1988, this footage shows a (rather shaky) walk down from Brighton Station via Trafalgar Street to the area just downhill of the station which was then a waste-ground car park, but which is now occupied by office buildings like Mocatta House. I make a small cameo appearance walking through the car park. This is just a small edited part of 5 hours of footage shot by me and my friend David in Brighton, Hove and the surrounding areas, for a spoof docu-feature we never completed. It is now of some historical significance, so we're releasing it.
Rather than let you hear the film-makers' comments, sometimes hilarious, usually banal, often puerile, I decided to replace the soundtrack with some music by Kevin MacLeod. - Кино
This is brilliant, Jon. Thanks!!
Great video! For every vehicle that appears in it I'm thinking: 'when did I last see one of those??'
Hey thanks for posting.
I was born in Brighton and grew up in Hove. I remember for a couple of years I went to a school in Brighton and we drove past the station every day. That car park is a supermarket now. I remember the Albion were looking for a home and this place seemed perfect and I felt sure that the powers would HAVE to realize it eventually - I was so upset when news came out it was just going to be a supermarket. Anyway all's well now of course but at the time it was a big deal to me! Anyway thanks again!
I'm glad it provoked some memories! 😁
what supermarket is it now?
Wonderful footage !! Thank you very much for uploading. If you release more could you upload it at the higher quality 1080p so that maximum quality is maintained
Glad you enjoyed seeing it. As for the quality…Ha, if only! The original footage was shot on what we had at the time, which was analogue VHS video tape, with an actual effective resolution of 320x240. It’s actually been upscaled for RUclips. There’s nothing more that can be done to maintain maximum quality, and no way to get it anywhere close to 1080p HD without jumping in a Time Machine with a modern HD camcorder and going back to 1988 to reshoot it.
Amazing video. You'd be able to see my house if it had been built in 1988. Do you have any more Brighton and Hove videos?
I’m going to have a look and see what else I can dig out. 🙂
