He's definitely one of my favorite Dr. Strange foes.

If Shuma Gorath came from old Conan Comics then HP Lovecraft may have been his creator. He and the creator of Conan both wrote short stories for the same publication and collab on a few together.

That original saga with Shuma is some of the best Dr. Strange out there. I loved that story and everything leading up to it.

I play Elder Scrolls Online. I have a Memento that basically summons a miniature Shuma Gorath as you stand there and scream in madness.

You are forgetting a little something called Marvel vs Capcom and it having Shumagorath as a playable character, thus adding to his notoriety and popularity at a time when he didn't really have any stories involving him.
I don't think he was in Marvel vs Capcom.
His video game appearance was Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel vs Street Fighter and Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3

I remember first seeing him in the infinity story and immediately being intrigued by the concept of the many angled ones, old Gods, hyporborean age, etc. This was roughly around the same time I was super into eldritch horror and the Lovecraftian mythos so I was blown away that marvel had a bunch of old lore with parallels and influences from his work, I definitely went on a deep dive/binge of research lol.
Shuma Gorath's best appearance was still in the video games without a doubt.

I'll tell you how the Galactus vs. Star wars thing ends: palpatine tricks him into service with Jedi mind trick, then destroys coresant, at which point a lone x wing flyw up with reed Richards yelling " ultimate nullifier!" Galactus leaves. Reed, johnny and Ben get medals from sue, Ben does the Chewbacca growl. Johnny asks Ben wtf is up with ur voice? Ben coughs up an ewok ear, yrols, that dang thing been lodged in there for a week. Roll credits

Bet they'll merge Cthon with ShumaGorath to avoid copyright issues with the Lovecraftian stuff which inspired Cthon. Therefore the Darkholde will become how Shuma Gorath invades the multiverse. They've done similar MCU character hybridisation before anyway to give very simple characters more realty so it wouldn't be the first time they've done it.

@@Zilvermonkey The original copyrighted material is over 100 years old so it has now expired but there has been a load of media that is both direct and derivative works so what happens is that you wander into a copyright grey area. By that I mean there can be an argument that a modern Lovecraftian piece of media is considered unique in its own right as the original copyright has expired. The MCU is such a visible and profitable property that it invites frivolous lawsuits that Marvel may just want to not even leave themselves open to that.
Chthon is a subversion of Lovecraft though as he sees himself as a father figure to Wanda. That's the opposite of Shuma Gorath who represents the Lovecraftian idea of being so vast he is uninterested in humans.
I think Shuma Gorath is the main villain while Chthon is the shadowy manipulator.
@@Relugus Except that the simple fact that her chaos magic manifested far from Wundergore Mt indicates it has a completely different origin than in the comics. Given that Marvel feels it nessersary to have an Eternals movie that means there are details nessersary to the larger narrative. Cthon and the others who fled from the Demogorge could easily be recast as the Many-Angled Ones as the origins of that race is unknown in the comics. Giving ShumaGorath the history and personality of Cthon would be far better than just having ShumaGorath as the shallow character he is in the comics.
This has legit been my theory for more than three years and so many people have ignored me 🤣

@@WSFMontana my text to my friend in March 2019: "I think my firmest theory for Doctor Strange 2 is that the villain will be Shuma-Gorath, Clea will be introduced as the sorceress supreme of the Dark Dimension (if they put Shuma-Gorath in the DD... or give him his own realm) and she will have a city where people are being sacrificed to Shuma-Gorath. Doctor Voodoo will aid Strange with his occult knowledge of "he who sleeps but shall awaken" "
With added knowledge from WandaVision, clearly there will be involvement there too.
Shuma-Gorath is heavily inspired by HP Lovecraft's work, one of which is titled "The Mountains of Madness". Lovecraft writes frequently about madness/insanity.

yooo shuma-gorath is so mystifying and his dialogue gives me chills.
Shuma-Gorath was always a relatively obscure character to me and I only knew about him through the Marvel vs Capcom fighting game series. I have heard rumours that he is more powerful than Dormamu, Mephisto and Nightmare, and I tend to believe that given earlier iterations of the character. I hope that Marvel finds a Knullesque arc for him where he returns as a legitimate threat.

I was the weird guy that knew who he was when Marvel Super Heroes by Capcom came out back in the 90s. He's one of my favorite characters to play with.
Dr strange is amazing and so are his stories I hope they keep him in the front row I do really like magic casters and characters with powers like that I know rob doesn’t very much but please cover his stories as much as you can thanks
First saw him in Marvel vs Capcom, really enjoyed the character design. This honestly makes the decision to include him in MvC even more confusing, but it's great to finally get an idea as to what the hell he is.

Maybe the Many Angled ones are a combination of leftover demons/aliens/cosmic entities from previous universes. Would explain their uncertain origins along with Shuma Gorath being an elder god

With Darkhold is introduced in the MCU, they could probably end up making an amalgamation of Chthon and Shuma-Gorath.
There's a huge difference between them in that Shuma is meant to be immense and having no interest in humans, so doesn't have any personal investment or interest in Wanda, though. Chthon is a subversion of Lovecraft; a vast cosmic entity like Shuma Gorath does not write an entire chapter of his grimoire about one person.
I think Shuma will indeed be the main villain in DS2, while Chthon will be mostly in the shadows and appear in a Scarlet Witch project and also maybe in Blade.

my best guess for why shuma-gorath doesn't really show up anymore is a case of simple powerlevels. a being so absurdly powerful as him, there's only so many people who can actually face off against him and arguably that DOESN'T include Dr.Strange anymore as he's been nerfed over the years. that puts an extreme limit on what can even be done with the character, so his usability in comics goes down accordingly.

With the all the rumors of the villains that might be in Dr. Strange 2, I have a feeling that Kang's plan is to unleash Shuma Gorath, Nightmare, and maybe even Mephisto to reek havoc on all the phase 4 movies and TV series... culminating into the defeats of those villains leading to a showdow with Kang or the council of Kangs leading to a multi-part battle. Or not...
This is sick. So I actually had a private commission done by artist Giorgio Comolo depicting a battle of Shuma Gorath facing off against Doctor Doom teaming up with Doctor Strange
It was from the 80's right I remember reading a story where Shuma Gorath killing Dr. DOOM by piercing his helmet through the eye holes the Dr. Strange dying to stop Shuma Gorath

Savage Avengers vol 2 with Conan, Magik, Wolverine and Dr. Strange was pretty freaking good. Magik and Conan fight a giant Asgardian Dragon with juggernaut. But King in Black blew it up. I was really looking forward to Doctor Strange and Magik and Conan and fighting this entity along and Kulan Gath
