Thank you Bruce for your in depth review! We love how you point out the detailed finishing and are glad you like the new look and logo of the smaller Essence ThirtyNine. Your macro lens shows that this is indeed a prototype watch. While it is visually a 1:1 reference to the production model, every single screw, hand and index has been custom built for this one piece. For our production model, this will obviously not be the case as we’re using manufacturing grade precision tooling for serial production batches and sort out any components that won’t pass our stringent visual and function quality control protocols. Thanks again for sharing your passion and Happy New Year to Bruce and the subscribers of your channel. Team Formex, Biel/Bienne
That is awesome to hear, thank you. As a member of the watch enthusiast community I want to say thanks for being a brand that listens to the watch fan and brings the value we often search for in a watch.
Stellar response to the raised issue. Transparency is so good. I've never considered this brand, but this watch does propose very good value for money and something I might consider - and certainly much more likely given your way in addressing what Bruce brought forward. Kudos.
Here in Calgary, Alberta, I just received my 43mm Essence... with a brown dial. Tremendous value in this brand. The polish and sophistication of this watch, I would say, is just slightly below that of an Omega Aquaterra 150 or even a Rolex Datejust - for a small fraction of the price. The online purchase and delivery experience is PERFECTION. Formex PREPAID all my Canadian taxes and import duties. Their e-commerce platform/process could not be more user friendly and simple to use. I will definitely be buying another Formex watch (or two) in the next 18 months.
I've been looking for a UK supplier of this watch for a couple of years, and two days ago, found one. Needless to say, I bought the watch, and it will arrive in a few days. Apart from the minor issues stated, which need magnification to spot, I think this watch is superb value.
Bruce, I hope you bring back the "spec sheet" in your videos. It's super informative to see all the specs in one place. Lug to lug for example escapes too many reviews. Really like the size and the color of it. The bracelet seems nice, but I usually swap mine into something more comfortable. I hate the scratches. Nice video, as usual, keep up the good work.
I absolutely love this dail!!! It feels like a lot of watch for the money. But I hope they make a version without the suspension then I would go for it in a heart beat.
Thanks for showing the 39mm version of the Essence as well as highlighting the bad finishing! I hope as well that this is only a pre-production version of the watch as the 39's will ship by the end of February at the earliest according to their website. I bought one myself as I already loved the 43mm and was waiting for a smaller one. But I never expected it to come SO fast and therefore even with their new logo! Very stoked to see it in person!
They make great watches . I would have loved a 41 but can’t please everyone . The changes are great makes the product look premium . The guys are also excellent to deal with ..
Love these. The ingenuity of their bracelet latches and adjustments are superb and the finishing seems well done at this price point. I wish it was 42mm for my larger wrist. Another great video BW! You’re one of the best!
Awesome video as always Bruce, wonderful looking watch is there too. Can’t wait for that reef diver review, certainly looks like the pick of The catalogue.
Fantastic mini-review. Especially useful to me since I resolved this year to buy a watch. Incidentally, it'll be my 1st watch purchase of the century(millennium). Don't ask...
My concern would be dirt getting trapped under the bezel when it rises up. Am I thinking too hard or does that happen? If you own one, I’d love to know.
The new logo is great. However, so is the old one. It evokes pure artisanal workmanship without regard for marketing and prettification. Like a brilliant, relentless investigative journalist before she gets the new wardrobe and a $400 haircut to go with her promotion to lead TV news anchor. I predict big growth and rapidly increased market share for Formex, so watch lovers would do well to acquire one or two of these magnificent pieces now!
I owned the 42mm version of the Formex Essence Chronometer. It’s a great watch for the money. It’s interesting to see chronometer grade movements make their way into microbrand watches like Formex, Christopher Ward, etc.... Although, it’s a shame to see the issues with the blue screws on the 39mm version you reviewed.
Just ordered one of these on the bracelet with an additional green leather strap. Bruce, I am curious how this green dial compares to that beautiful emerald-dialed Aquaracer you owned for a bit. The Formex dial looks a bit more muted, but I am just curious. Also, how do you feel the bracelet quality is? More specifically, I have a Zelos Swordfish and the bracelet styles look nearly identical, so I am wondering whether you believe this is higher quality than the Zelos bracelet,. Thanks and happy new year!
Yeah but this finishing isn't as good especially those damages screws and rough hands when compared to seiko, but seiko does have qc issues. However I think it is overblown as many tend to forget that many rolexes and turdors are missaligned. Just check reddit, it's filled with complaints
Another great review Bruce! 👍 Why must watch makers take a decent dial, and litter it up with excessive badging/ lettering? “Less is More” should apply here I believe? It seems every watch maker, with a few exceptions, cannot refrain from just adding another line of lettering, as if they must advertise all features of the watch. It is not too bad on this watch, but borders on too much. It’s not needed! Clutter free dials when possible, please! New logo is a mixed bag? Formex lettering is better. QC needs to be addressed on final product! Is that dirt specks, or some mild pitting on the bezel, in first part of the video? 🤔😳🙄 👍👍👍✌🏻😁
While it's fair to point out the things picked up under macro, it's also important to remember that it's a sub $1500 watch. If minor flaws only detectable under a loupe are enough to deter you from buying the watch, you need to be shopping in a higher price range.
Watch price is 1350eu at Netherlands. I checked the watch around half day and 39mm is a good improvement. That is all. For my perspective quality and the price balance is absolutely not good. It may worth max 800 eu if you compare another micro brand christopher ward.
Great watch, and even though they explained it to me why they didn’t use a screw down crown, I would have bought this in black if it did. Also, that vacheron is absolutely GORGEOUS!

The Christopher Ward C65 Dartmouth also has the cosc certified SW200 and is somewhat cheaper and seems to get good reviews. Would that be a better purchase for someone starting out?
Hi Bruce, just watched your video and a question came to mind, what is the starting price point to justifie using macro shoots of a watch dial. I only say this because this watch seems to offer a lot for the money and even more so on the secondry market. Are we watch enthusiast's never satisfied and always exspecting more for the money.
Nice review. They are wonderful watches. I'm waiting for my reef to ship. The delivery got bumped back to end of January/beginning of February but that's ok.
Hi Bruce. Even with the logo change, it’s the company name that turns me off. They do some really innovative stuff, but for that price the poor finishing on the hands, indices and that ruined blue screw are all huge disappointments. Monta would be my choice for sure. Cheers!
More Pyrex than Rolex? For me, it’s an improvement (and reminds me a bit of Grand Seiko now too). And Monta reminds me a bit of Montblanc. :) But the other issues seem to hurt this Formex in the head to head with Monta, a showdown we all want to see! I also would love to hear more about the other comparisons you mentioned, Bruce, like Longines. I for one am not sure how the ETA 2824/Sellita 200 chronometer grade in this Formex compares to the modified eta 2892/Sw300 in the Monta? Or how that Monta compares to the Longines Conquest with the L888, another (“in house”) modified 2892? It’s difficult for a lot of us to decide between watches like Formex and Monta that we can’t see in person, so we really depend on you Bruce! :) So thanks again for the great videos!! Hope to see a Monta vs. Formex showdown!!!
@@MrZanzibar123 Oh man I would love to do that! Monta was supposed to let me borrow a Noble but I don't think I am very high on their priority list for reviewers. Perhaps it is selling so well they don't feel the need to lend them out

Great video, Bruce, thanks. This Formex looks really strong against competition such as the latest round of Seikos in the just over $1K range. I assume because of the shock absorber case it's still not a screwdown crown and 100m WR?
@@mikesharkey6 thanks for the real world experience/feedback. I am tempted by this or their new diver, but I think I want to save a bit more and give Grand Seiko a try.

Bruce, quick off topic question, the date change on my ETA 2924-2 Breitling Avenger automatic 43 happens rather slowly. I was watching it at 12 midnight and it took 5-10 minutes before the date changed from 3 to 4. Why does this happen slowly and not as soon as it strikes 12am? Thanks..also anyone else how knows please feel free to jump in
I think you mean ETA 2824-2. It should quick change. So, if it's authentic and functioned properly previously, it needs repair. If it never did, then perhaps you should question the watch that you have and the movement allegedly in it.
@@JayandSarah Yea that's the right movement. I bought it brand new from Radcliffe jeweler's which is in my opinion a pretty reputable AD. The watch was brand new with no signs of wear..however, after reading what you said, I think I will follow up with Breitling about this issue. Thanks for the input
Nice. However I think that the shock absorber system will accumulate dust or sand (at the beach). So we will not be able to wear the watch at the beach! The construction can never prevent the fine dust from accumulating. The cleaning will be, in my opinion, very difficult especially if the dust gets stuck. This "shock absorber" is completely useless (but you pay for it). I really don't see its usefulness.
There's a old man that hangs out in my dads barbershop alot and he wears his very old datejust so loose on his wrist that it can probably spin all the way around no problem. I like to wear my bracelets a bit on the looser side myself but nothing like that. My wrist can really swell up if im doing stuff or eat alot of food. If im not wearing a watch with a glide lock type clasp or a easy micro adjust i will have it on the looser side. It just uncomfortable for me to have it tight on my wrist.
Formex doesn't sound any more ridiculous than Rolex. At least Formex means something Formex is literally a combination of the two French words “forme” and “extreme,” remains true to its roots with its current CEO being an avid skydiver and racecar driver himself.
Formex still sounds like a brand of condoms. Haha! I do like the new mark, the name font, and the watch overall is nice looking. I just don't think I can buy it because the name is a turn off for me.
@@BruceWilliams Comex sounds a bit odd to me but I'm not forming any immediate associations with that name. As for Timex and Rolex, I've known those brands since I was pretty young. Thinking back, one of my first watches was a 3 hand Timex quartz. Again, I'm not forming any odd associations with either of those. Quite possibly because the brands are cemented in my mind. I'm sure I could force something to make a joke but I'd have to think about it. Honestly, the first time I saw the name Formex it just popped into my head that the name was odd and it sounded like latex condoms or gloves. “Formex, for when you need protection that fits just right. Our newest line of form-fitting latex products available in additional sizes for that perfect Formex fit.” Form-fitting latex (Formex). I can't unsee it, haha! I know that the name Formex is actually derived from 'forme extrème', which is French for ‘extreme shape.’
I like the green , but lets face it ..micro brands including Seiko always produce homage watches , this is trying to be a Omega Aqua Terra and just fails... all these micro brands just need to try something original , or people will just save the extra and buy the watch it's pretending to be..
Formex sounds like an import export company about to go out of business every other year. The stripes on the dial look like farmland furrows. Would prefer e.g. an Oris or Stowa diver for the money.

nice watch, horrible name. Can I buy it at my local drugstore?
Just can't get past that name.. Formex sounds like a bathroom cleaner or a women's sanitary product.
That VC is over priced in fairness to the comparison. Solid gold watch is more jewelry than watch...
Formex - sounds like a vacuum cleaner brand to me...
I like the green , but lets face it ..micro brands including Seiko always produce homage watches , this is trying to be a Omega Aqua Terra and just fails... all these micro brands just need to try something original , or people will just save the extra and buy the watch it's pretending to be..
Excellent point Chris

Formex sounds like an import export company about to go out of business every other year. The stripes on the dial look like farmland furrows. Would prefer e.g. an Oris or Stowa diver for the money.
