I've been wearing my SKX after ignoring it for years and I'm really enjoying it, it's all very good chasing the latest watches and technology but it's really fun to just get back to where we came in to this hobby
I got my 007J model about 2 years ago. It had a stiff rotor and would not wind efficiently on the watch winder, so I oiled it with watch oil from Esslinger, and it is better. But wtf?! Anyway, all happy now. But the no hand winding seems so primitive. No interest in any other 7s26s.
Very true, we have that one watch that will always be with us. I have the SKX too but my first was an Orient Mako XL with the orange bezel, also a shake to wake movement. I try to wear it regularly.
I tried the Essense & carbon fiber at Worn & Wound NYC, and they are fantastic. Formex and Christopher Ward maybe the best intro Swiss-movement watches out there. Honorable mention to Serica field watches
I aboslutely love my Essence 39 Black dial, I barely take it off! Wish I had a bit more money to burn on watches. If I did an Electric Blue Laggera would have been in the queue by now! 😆 It's an absolute stunner, plus everything that was said in the review it makes it a no-brainer! Thanks for supporing my favourite mircobrand, Jodi! 🙂
I tried this one on at our local AD last week and it is stunning. Pictures simply do not do it justice. That carbon deployment clasp is amazing. It is high on my wish list; so thanks for the review, Jody.
Very cool, this watch does a lot of things that are appealing to me. I love an ultralight watch, un-scratchable black surface, bold black surrounds on a bright dial, a well integrated date window, and on the fly micro adjust. I can see how people who are "meh" about those things wouldn't give this watch a second look, but for a certain selection of watch nerds this is catnip.
I have an Essence 39 and I like it a lot. The green dial version that I have is beautiful and the accuracy has been spot on; great specs in general too. Their customer service is great too; I’d recommend the brand.
This might be the best 'thinking man's' sport watch available, for all the reasons you so intelligently set out for us to ponder and enjoy! My brain shouted 'Yes Please!!' but my heart ticked on with its steady resting beat. Except that is, for a sharp rise in tempo when I spotted your lovely cycles sporting 'proper' mudguards! Dr Jody, I was impressed!
Glad Formex has been at the Worn & Wound Wind-Up Watch Fairs last year (2022). Their watches you need to see to understand the quality and you're they look and wear on wrist. Got to see them in person at the SF Wind-Up and they surprised me in the wearability, comfort, and confirmed the high quality they seem to be reflected in many reviews.
I agree fully with your review. However, in these days of austerity in the UK £ 1500 + is a lot of money to pay for what is a microbrand 3 hander with date, even such a well designed watch as this. Maybe if my numbers come up on the Lottery it would be a first choice dress watch. Great review as always Jody.
If you look at how and where watches below 3000 from non-micro brands are made and the markups before getting to consumers, then you will look at the watch industry with a very critical view. Also look at the requirements to have Swiss Made on a watch. It’s a shell game. Ask yourself why grey market dealers (another glaring indictment on the markups by the watch industry) like Jomashop can afford to sell new name brands watches at 25-50% below retail? The markups from factories to our wrists are on the order of 300-400%. The microbrands that are respectable bypass the middlemen and marketing and passed the saving to us. Reliability? There are basically 8 movements that are used by every brands under 3000. And they are much cheaper to maintain and service. The service is much better. Much better. You get emails returned within 48h and many times from one of the owners (looking at you Zelos and Damasko:). I have been collecting for awhile with pieces from G-Shock to H Moser (a micro brand, lol) and some of my favorites are from micro. Don’t buy new unless Rolex calls and do your research. Buy what you like because it’s not anyone’s business. Enjoy.
There is nothing better than this time piece. And i was looking at the Grand Seiko spring drive, the Ball watches and the Panzera. Nothing compares to this. NOTHING 3 years warranty not 2 years like the others! The clasp has a micro adjustment! You get value with this watch!
Great watch! But is it really a better sports watch than my solar-powered square G that sets itself and has (amongst other things) a stopwatch function? No.
Jody, I absolutely love the T-shirt you chose for this video. I myself am a fan of Scotland's other national drink! We are definitely going to need that state of the T-shirt collection video. 😁
Wish money was no object I would love one of these as well. Thanks Jody - another good review. (Also enjoyed the About Eff ing Time shout out for your reviews.)
I wasn't sold at all for the first half. And then I saw the wrist shots. WOW. That really is a perfect fit. If they'd just fatten up those hands it'd be pretty perfect. Nodus' Sector series has some similar hands and I think they do the girth right. I'll keep this is mind if I can shift my Panerai. Thanks for the content Jody!
Sadly out of my price range at the moment - but the blue dial with the black sailcloth strap with blue stitching is something I would love on my wrist… (sucker for blue dial watches…😇)
I'm kind of down to a 3 watch collection. A black Kamasu as a daily, an RZE Resolute for intense action and a Direnzo Mondial in powder blue to show off a little in the summer.
When I see a Fornex watch, it always reminds me of younger days as an engineering student doing summer work building bridges and flyovers as it's the name of a well known concrete sealant. I moved away from the discipline into process engineering but I'll never forget Formex! Anyway, this is a very nice watch indeed, looks good and at that weight I'm sure it's a comfortable one to wear.
Got one of the last Essence 39 meteorite dial from Long Island Watches. Absolutely stunning! Held its own against my Octo Finissimo and not far behind the White Birch. Can wear it without worries also. And didn’t have to sell a car to get the day date meteorite dial, lol.
That is a great watch. I agree fully with the niggles about the deployment clasp. The radius they chose seems not to follow many actual wrists. This one is a bit beyond my budget but - maybe - one day . . .
I think I’d prefer a titanium case. This carbon case looks like the injection molded stuff, where they just use something like nylon with some very short chopped carbon fiber mixed in.
Great video and a really nice watch! The closest competitor to this I can think of is the Christopher Ward Colchester. I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the 2. Keep the great content coming, and I'll Keep Watchin' 👍
Love your review as usual. If I may suggest something to take it to the next level: get one of those cheap devices that tell you whether crystal is sapphire or not. Obviously the latter is not relevant for the Formex, but it's useful for the Chinese specials for example.
I wonder if they got the name "Formex" from the aliens in Ender's Game. That's my only reference when I hear that name 🙃 The watch is not for me, but I always enjoy watching any videos from you Jody! Keep it up!

It’s essentially an aqua-terra that’s been on a diet; teak deck striping, date at 6 etc. My aqua-terra is a bit thick at over 14mm, it would be perfect at 11mm like this.
Its a cool deployant clasp for sure but I'll always prefer a pin buckle on a strap. And its light but my Hamilton Khaki handwound is actually lighter than that. Maybe that's a heavy strap?
Nice device. Needs a strap and price point diet. 20mm strap or at least a taper + maybe an $1100 purchase price. Outside my threshold for this type of watch. Also I'm still not a fan of the branding. Makes me think of Durex.
Really interesting watch, I just wonder who the brand is targeting or area of the market they want to get into. The quality of watch, cosc certification, Swiss origin and price are incredible but, the tactical look, average clasp and (in my opposite) dull dial just don’t make me want it. Great review tho Jody!
Nice looking watch but quite expensive , I think quartz for sports though, have you ever looked at the TRASER Outdoor Pioneer, Swiss, Tritium, carbon case, proper milspec, love mine .
Great review, lots of info and several excellent ideas for improving the watch. (do you ever get any feedback from the manufacturers, it would behoove them to be listening to your ideas!)
I appreciate some aspects of this watch but really I can't see the appeal aesthetically, if the purpose of functionality is your thing why not just buy a Timex or a Casio with similar looks. For this kind of money I could buy something that makes a real statement, have I missed something..?
Much to my surprise, I have become a Formex fan myself. Rocked the steel case 39 mm Essence for a solid 4 days in a row this week, which is something few of my watches ever achieve. The OEM leather strap fitted with the adjustable clasp allows for an extremely comfortable wearing experience and the +2 secs per day movement is within Rolex specs. What more could you want ? I'd be interested to know what size you chose for the rubber strap. On the Formex website they seem to have sizes in quarter inch gradients. If you choose a 7" size then it does seem like a lot of "extra" rubber strap at the end. Perhaps you could get them to send you a few different sized strap to try out so people buying (and you) could get a better fit? But all in all a nice watch if you can afford it.
I really like these watches. What a shame it is not a screw down crown though!! Any sports watch should, in my opinion, have a screw down crown to guarantee the water resistance.👍
