Guys like Derek with the knowledge he has are few and far between nowadays, there are people who "think" they know then there are the people that really do, not saying he gets every single fact right, but he's probably forgotten more than many of us know anyway 😂
I remember a customer coming into the garage where I worked back in the '80's with a stunning red 240Z even the boss came out for a look. Lovely cars and still look amazing.
I think the mk5 Cortina had different Front indicators and Fluted rear lights also, the Crusader versions were the limited edition, and were the last run-out models before they were axed as the Sierra was out on the same reg. A friend of mine who was an engineer at Dagenham where they were built bought one of the last ones, put gallons of waxoyl in it, under it and over it but was still annoyed when the bottoms of the doors rusted through from the inside, and it wasn’t that old when this started.
Just love listening to Derek’s knowledge and experience. Speaking as the owner (but I’ll never sell) of a Nova Sports Car which was produced in Mirfield, West Yorks, I’d love to know if one of these has ever been through the Mathewsons auctions … I doubt it! 😉
My first car in 82 was a Mark 4 identical colour to the one in the video - £995 - Loved it - Had to get a new engine after one year - Swapped the 1600 for a 2 litre - Happy days
There were SO many of those over here. They got the wheels driven off them and if in the North East, well, they are rusting in peace.... Now, they are very desirable!
I think you will find that the Mk V was the Crusader version which used a lot of the left over parts from previous versions, but for me me the Cortina was the last good British Ford
In Australia there are 6 Datsun 240Z on a popular car sire and they range from AUD55K to AUD135K and all are low kilometer vehicles (highest is 83000K)
I had the misfortune to have a company car, a Mk IVa Cortina, total bag of shite, cam shaft 25K miles, clutch at the same time, breaks adequate, leaked water, a pudddle in passenger foot well. Door cards were so thin the acoustics were poor inside when fitting speakers. Very lively rear end , found out when I unloaded the boot one weekend, my old VW beetle on crossply tyres was safer in a bend. Eventually replaced the Cortina with a front wheel drive Escort estate, 0.2 sec to 60 mph slower than the XR3.. As for the brown Cortina "You can not polish a turd". Sorry Derek.
Terrible rot boxes but great projects. I knew a guy who did a nut & bolt resto. Jesus he spent a mint. It was beautiful when he finally finished it. They were lovely cars. Just should’ve stayed in Japan.
What? No way, had a Capri ll 2.0 S and loved it except when the roads were wet of course. Unless we’re talking MK1 or even MK2 Lotus Cortina then you are 100% correct. This will make you laugh (still makes me cry) I was offered a 1965 MK1 in 1968 for around £200 but as I was still an apprentice turned it down 😩😢
Looking at the 240Z I think it probably was a UK car all it’s life, right hand drive and old tax disc. But I understand that as you say there are loads of them sold in the US as they were cheap cars at the time. Your right there was of course a mark v Cortina we had one called a Crusader 👍
Also under the hood (Bonnet) looks like a pair of SU Carbs, (I could be wrong, but didn't Datsun originally fit "Nikki " Carbs to their cars. Derek was saying the yanks had these & we had the Capri, i know which one was the better of the two in my opinion, & i wouldn't have been the "Dagenham Dustbins". Again I personally never rated the Capri, the 1600E in my opinion was far superior, Even the Savage with the 3 litre Engine, & of course the twin Cams. but again personal opinion.
Someone else here said it was first UK registered in 2010. I’m guessing it was South African. I’ve got the most original RHD Alfasud Ti from the Kalahari Desert, and as long as it doesn’t come from Durban, massive rainfall and on the coast, SA cars might be a bit neglected mechanically, but body is usually very good
The 240 could have been an import from the US. Rust free LHD solid car from the US married to an ex rust bucket RHD dashboard and off you go. Was the Cortina a South Africa import.🤔
Sorry but I think this was a US car due to the rear marker lights being fitted its relatively easy to convert from wrong side to correct side depend what side of the pond you are

This man knows his cars AND the values, sounds great, well done Sir!
It would be fascinating to see three or four cars that didn't sell (that weren't over-reserved).

Wise words a car is only original once ! So true !
Derek is usually on the money with his estimate’s.He’s good at expectation management 😂

Cortina mk5 was advertised by Ford at launch as mk4 series 80 (with supposed better rustproofing).

My Dad had one as a company car. I borrowed his 2.0 Mk4 Cortina Ghia when I was in my early twenties…
Damn I was cool…
Top man nows is cars true professional keep going mate you are a legend
Datsun Z Side marker light's give it away as an American import
Converted to RHD
Paint less dent removal…will sort the Cortina
Thanks Derek
The Z is an absolute beauty!

That 240z was built in January 1972 and first registered in UK in November 2010
I would guess South African
3:42 dereks doin the Spider-Man leaning one legged on 2 cars having told us the last ones owners a pudding & gave it way
Wise words from the man
There were a huge number of JDM cars imported into NZ . I suspect this one is a JDM imports as well.
You are never far away from your values that you think that the cars will do 😊❤
It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay. Nostalgia seems to play a big factor.

Wonderful bloke this Derek fella.
I do believe he can arrange specific mileages on any vehicle you buy from him.
That ones rhd not U S spec. Was it converted in England?
Do any of the cars from the likes of Wheeler Dealers etc. ever turn up for auction
The Jensen they did went though an auction recently
If the 24 ouncer was a US car it would be left hand drive
Terrible rot boxes but great projects. I knew a guy who did a nut & bolt resto. Jesus he spent a mint. It was beautiful when he finally finished it. They were lovely cars. Just should’ve stayed in Japan.
240Zs from the US would be LHD, surely?
I think it’s from SA
Much nicer than a Capri

@@carlmason4153 UK 240Z's had SU's from the factory, not sure about the Federal models.
@@Omegaman1969 Well done my man , I didn't know that, had a relation with a 260C sedan & that had Nikki on it, thanks for the update.
@@carlmason4153 mine had 3 x twin dellortos on it when I bought it, that’s quite a common conversion in the U.K. 👍🏻

Buy a good Cortina rust proof it evey year drive it for the rest of your life
I don't think I would buy a car that has been abandoned under a tree, I don't know how much truth is in that
uh, not unheard of...not at all. More than likely sitting in a driveway or back yard.
I don't like the green wheels and green stripes
In the US often we don't bother trying to sell the old cars, we just park them up in the yard, it's so much easier than trying to sell.
Straight up, tell us what the reserve was then what it made.
Don’t waffle give us the facts please.

Was the Cortina a South Africa import.🤔
That XK has got really cheap and nasty, Asian spec chrome trims on the lights, just awful.
Of course the 240Z isn't US because it's a right hand drive. In the USA we put the wheel on the correct side... and it's feet, not meters🤪
Conversions are readily available.

Metres old boy. ;-)
