Your chair is giving "Pharaohcore" vibes. ✌
Agreed
Misread this and thought it said 'Pariahvibes" lmfao
I appreciate how you balance beauty, functionality, and cost. So many designers promote styles that are completely impractical for most people. You show that design can be timeless, functional, and beautiful. Thanks.
That means a lot! Thank you so watching! I know we all wish we could have major budgets to do whatever we want, but at the end of the day the space still has to be equally beautiful and livable
Mushroom, squiggles, checkerboard, paper lanterns and bubble dishes, I never took any of these seriously, they do look juvenile and trendy from the start. Completely disposable, or one use, temporary, never thought anybody took them seriously. Great vid Daddy.
I love mushrooms but I use them selectively. Like in my garden stuff? Absolutely. An art piece in a creative space? Go off. With a couple stuffed animals? Why not.
Keep that chintzey $5 plastic garbage away from me.
You look like a stylish Bond villain sitting in that chair
LOL. The cat is missing, though.
Haha! I love it, thank you 🤍
I agree with everything you said except the beige look. I agree if everything is beige. I decorated my condo in beige/white but I did that as a palette to display my art collection.
I'm there too. Presently redoing our bedroom in mostly whites, creams, etc. There will be Greenery and there will eventually be serene artwork of pleasant, nature/green/brown tones. Just have not found it yet. I may get the walls painted in a very, very light tan/beige, buy I'm not straying from this palette. So far, I'm loving it.
This is the right way to do it. I think it's the people who paint their infants toys beige that are the problem though.
In my opinion, bland color palette is the problem.
For example, In many luxury homes there is too much white, too much black, too much gray....too much combination of white-gray-black...Many luxury homes appear to be bland, sad, dead, unfinished, without "personality", like an office, like a shop, etc.
I try to imagine paper lighting in our home... well, we have dust. And then, in summer, there are - the flies! We live out in the countryside, with the neighbor's lovely cows all around our house. And what do cattle do? They eat grass, and they poop. A lot. And who are attracted to cow manure? Flies! Do they come into the house, the flies, that is? They certainly do, and what do they do inside the house? They poop, of course, especially on white things. Like paper lamps, which can't be cleaned. I say no to paper lighting, flies are one of the reasons. We also have pets visiting now and then, and they run around both outside and inside, so no thanks. :D
Fly poop risk as something to consider in home design is a new one for me. Thank you!
@@Lisa-jm3nksame I live in the country now 🤠 and wanted to have a paper light but ig not now 😭
I never liked the Spudnik lights. I have seen many who bought those already replacing them. 🤷🏻♀️. I also like that you considered cleaning. I was so close to buying a black countertop until I read how many people regretted their bc of cleaning issues. 🤦🏻♀️
That’s why I’m here! Function and practicality must come hand in hand 🥰
I agree with every one of these points except for paper lamps because I love them and they're pretty easy to dust off and keep looking great.
I actually had a nightmare last night that someone had gone into my home while I was away and replaced all my decor with checkerboard patterns, skiggly stuff and bubblecore horrors. It was so ugly I immediately woke up sweating and it took me a minute to calm my heart rate. I hate these trends so much, they totally creep me out.
I love them too and have lots of them on my sun porch - all from Morocco and India...so pretty! Those and the paper star lanterns - love those too.
@@rmcar549 Love the paper star lanterns too, especially in the winter
4) Sputniks - I like them if theyve got globe glass fittings round the bulbs that are frosted
6) Plates - they looks like dog bowl wtf 😂
7) Mushrooms - cute for kids bedroom, only
11) Zelliage - Faux tiles of these are actually nicer and more practical
13) Checkerboard - Matilda Goades kitchen is the only time I've since this look stunning
That armchair looks like an exotic frog had a baby with a harlequin :))
Hahaha 🤣
COMPLETELY agree with everything here. Good design = liveability, functionality FIRST. Because a home is a machine that supports how you want to live. I do not want to be a slave to my home! Thanks, DD....
Never could imagine it's possible, because I always seams to like opposite things to majority, just so many times my favourite food was removed from the menus of different restaurants because nobody else wanted it...but right now, here I agree with each single word! It's so good to know I'm not the only one :)
Boucle sweaters were big in the 80s and every time i wore one, i caught the damn thing on something, so no way in hell would i pay $$$$$ for that in furniture. The mushroom thing is another no. First of all, the 70s called and they don't even want them back. Second, some of those mushrooms look too much like a certain something else that you really shouldn't have out on the kitchen counter -- though it would be super fun to hear Robin Williams riff on that, wouldn't it? :) Great video as always, DD.
I'm wearing one I found in a thrift store right now. Absolutely my cats are going to make it impossible to wear in public, and real soon. It's great for $5 though.
@@MerryWidow420. You got some use out of it and the cats will have endless fun with it. $5 well spent 😀
Your answer is everything I wanted to say and more XD
Thank you,@@lovepilie 😁
Shit. My newish large easy chair is boucle. But I decided to harken back to the old days of boucle and realize that, in essence, it will never go out of style! Everything goes in a circle and it will def circle back.
Hey Daddy ;-), when I was growing up I remember my grandparents had a mushroom themed kitchen. They had mushroom wallpaper,. mushroom print towels and mushroom top flour and sugar ceramic canisters . After my grandpa died at 90 years ago the only thing unclaimed that was theirs were the mushroom canisters that they probably bought in the 70s, which I asked my mom to keep for me when I have my own place. I should be building my home within the next couple years, I'm currently 47, and still wondering how I'll make them work in my contemporary and very small space. The colors won't be a problem, but mushrooms don't really scream modern and I'm not really into mushrooms as a theme. They are only sentimental to finally feel like they are with me in some way. Could you make a video on using inherited items in modern spaces?
I absolutely love the way you explain your opinions! You are so honest and down to earth and tell it like it is. Love it!
Agree with the entire list! What home architecture/room is OK for Zellige tile? Minimalism means living with everything you need and use (it doesn’t mean living with almost nothing and most images are actually showing Brutalism).
I was tired of the lime-wash when it started because it doesnt look good in most homes
It goes with a very specific style that most people don’t consider
Somebody asked me what is boucle, I said, "Think dog bed."
Boucle is a much looser weave than on dog beds. Boucle is not practical for anything other than staging.
I agree with all your opinions in this video
Thank you 🤍
Thx for explaining how awful boucle upholstery is! I sew so I knew & was shocked when I saw it used for furniture.
Thanks Another great video ❤
The chair's upholstery is bsd - the fronts of the arm's don't match.
I know 😅
When I see open shelves I think grease n dirt . Who’s going to clean them every time u use them ? The look never did it for me 🤷♀️
Thank you for sharing your refreshing ideas about different interior designs. I learned a lot about designing and will continue to watch your videos.
I am absolutely loving your channel. I have a home where I put in beautiful rod iron in casing the stairway and an amazing travertine and marble fireplace. But I want to transition it into more of a modern space. So I’m drinking in everything you’re saying.I have one question, what options do I have to silk lampshades?
Mushroom…remember the duck things many years ago? About the same thing lol
Thanks Phoenix… great pointers 👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
You’re most welcome! Thanks for watching
In the words of Marie Kondo…. You bring me JOY (and laughter) I could hang with you all day.
Awe yay! Thanks for watching 🤍
Agree with everything except paper lanterns & stars which I have collected from all over, on my sun porch ceiling. And I don't agree about boucle, which I've always loved, but ONLY on items that don't get wear like a curtain in my laundry room that always stays perfect, and a throw pillow that doesn't get sat on or leaned against. Otherwise, yes, you're right, this fabric wears like shit.
One of your examples of paper lights is actually a metal mesh.
Thank your mentioning cleaning! So many bathroom or design trends are obviously done with not a single thought of how tf am I gonna clean this???
Exactly, some things can look beautiful for a picture, but they accumulate dust and dirt and they are not practical. People forget about practicality or they have a cleaner lol
Hello, I'm watching from Thailand, your videos are came up randomly and I enjoy them very much. It helpful and tasteful..by the way, love the chair and your fashion style👏👍
Love the video. You are so right about open shelving. I am messy at the best of times. I did buy a chequered towel two months ago. And I have one boucle chair.
The odd trend to indulge in isn’t a bad thing. I got a few checkerboard hand towels that I’ll hold onto until next time 😉
Boucle to me is an old sweater that pilled lol so ugly
Haha perfect description
Oh this was an awesome video 🙌💛🙌 We’ve just newly build first home and hope to get an ok to move in next week - subscribing to your channel for inspo! And to save my creative spirit from bad dyi ideas 😅
another great video DD, You know, I have never seen the appeal of boucle, first time I saw it reminded me of the terry cloth table cloths (held on with elastic) that were ubiquitous in beer parlours when I was young.
Oh my god you’re not wrong!
HaHaHa
@@mrphoenixgrey
I have never seen "bubble dishes" in my life before and now I wish you had put a warning - I can't unsee it. Hideous.
That chair... did you acquire it from a Beetle Juice auction, or the rabbit hole from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?
It was a collab of the two 🤣
Love open shelving (just a bit). Some people DO live that way. We have beautiful things, have followed Marie Kondo and Rajiv Surrendra, and have gotten rid of Glad plastic packaging and the endless upper cabinets. We have some base cabinet and hang pans and knives on the wall.
We actually chop (no food processor) and cook. Try it!
You are in shape !!!😅😊
Awe thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
Paper lighting was for a party …you threw them away…lol. Love you!
Hey!! New subscriber here - What do you do if you think your style is a hybrid of a few styles? For example, I LOVE organic modern and a bit of Mid Century with hints of Art Deco. I live in a 1910 PreWar apartment in NYC, so I love the ornate details and vintage pieces that pays respect to old NYC! How in the world do I even begin? Do I need to pick one first?
And thank you SOOOO much for all of the info in your videos! I’ve been binging them! :)
On the paper lighting, I disagree 😅 Dusters exist 😂
And they're not that fragile. I had some for years. Also dirt cheap.
I’d say pretty much all of these were around for the last 3-5 years and would have been used in last years or a things we got rid off in 2022 video 😐
Boucle reminds me of my first fleece jacket in the 80s. It pilled like that when you looked at it
Phoenix...you always say what I am thinking!! Thank goodness, I often wonder what the f#@& are these people thinking? 100% agree as usual.
"This isn't snow white that you're decorating."
Thats the person its for actually.
I did use 3 stacked open shelves but got not the same but similar mostly vintage baskets mostly with lids to fit on them. It looks more like a collection of baskets, but I can store tones of crap in them and it is easy to get to. Just saying even large vessels or nice baskets is an alternative, as long as you can't see into them. DD might even approve?
Backlit onyx gives me luxe lobby vibes. Maaaaybe you could use it in a powder room, if it matches the design aesthetic of the rest of the house?
lol I thought you were going to say, „ If you have a rump, this furniture is not for you.“ They’re now doing boucle‘ in COLORS! 😂
I agree with everything you say, from the impractical to the downright ugly. Also agree about the word "aesthetic," but the one word that makes me cringe is "organic." The phrase "pop if color" is a major teeth grinding trigger! BTW you're hilarious. 😂❤
About the lime wash: you said in your video that you would allow it in a powder room on the condition that this room matches the style of the rest of your house. Do you have any advice (or maybe an existing video) on how to accomplish that?
I was thinking about using lime wash, but even if I don't I still find it difficult to match my powder room and bathroom with the rest of my apartment. Right now they have a completely different vibe than the other rooms and it bothers me.
A designer that can pull off mixing patterns is Sarah Richardson! She's been doing it for years and imo successfully!
Cluttercore? 🙄 I think this just people’s attempt to justify having too much stuff. Make it a “style”! No. Lol even if it is ‘nicely’ arranged, too much stuff is still too much stuff. Sure, i don’t want my home to be empty and void, but i also don’t want my home to be filled to the brim with stuff. Plus, “Cluttercore” is too visually overwhelming. That gallery wall makes me wonder where my eye is supposed to land. No resting place whatsoever.
That Prada jacket is 🔥🔥🔥. I must have it! Ps… F’ Boucle, cluttercore, neutral drenching, anything DIY, and the Tom Ford book. Back lit onyx only if you have 500 foot walls.
Thank you. I’m complete. lol
I got the Sputnik fixture because I am getting older and less mobile and I can change the bulbs out easily. Also I need more light as I age.
Agree. Thanks.
"We need to get Marie Kondo up in this bitch." LOL. I agree with most of these 100%. Not sure about the quiet luxury thing. I hear what you're saying but, doesn't "quiet luxury" just mean traditional, good design, mostly in neutrals, and with a variety of textures? I still think you can emulate that look at a lower price point in your home - especially if you shop second hand.
Agreed! :)
Ditto!
Absolutely! Quiet Elegance, as I prefer to call it, has good bones, good fabric, a restrained hand, and designed for comfort and durability, without clashing patterns, trendiness, or logos of any kind. Neither I nor my home are billboards, thank you kindly. I like traditional silhouettes pared down with an eye toward a hopeful future.
Would you do a video on whole house lighting based on design style? I’m building a house and all I’m seeing are a ton of sputnik lights and lighting with balls. I like them both but is there a formula to whole house lighting so you don’t use too much of one style of light fixture. Also, I can find amazing lighting but I’m not paying $15k for a single light fixture. I really need some good ideas in a moderate price range ❤.
No the chair is some kind of Ken core in a sad green color
Preach Daddy
Pre-K teacher here. Even *I* would NOT bring those squiggly things in my class. Ever. It's just plain ugly.
p.s. The mushroom things would be for the Smurfs. Which I am not.
p.p.s. Great video DD.
Thanks for watching love 🤍
Bubble blob squiggle lumpy stuff is so gross. It reminds me of corporate art or 80s McDonald’s or the title sequence on a jazzercize vhs
Eww dont like the funky bubble flatware or the mushrooms
I thought about the zealous tiles too. I'm like wait a minute. Why would people be putting this? In wet areas the uneven nest is going to be a bitch to scrub
Im always afraid when I see you sitting on your chair..it moves !!!..and it sounds like it will pop..is it inflatable??....LOL..Great video.
I'd like to flower pot mushroor the flower holder
I absolutely agree with everything you said.
Who cleans those shelves! 😂
Exactly! 🤣
Can you do a video on Dita von Teese's AD home? I thought it was much more interesting than the Kardashian home.
Yes, I would love to see his reaction on this one!
Adding to my list :)
Anything is much more interesting than anything "Kardashian".
Agree with you 100%
listening to you is exactly like listening to Nick Lewis
We both have very similar taste and values when it comes to ‘trends’ 🥰
I never understood the mushrooms decor... 😮may be in a cabin in the wood where nobody goes to visit you..😅
Bowls and plates that look like cabbage!.
Love your video's. You are a very handsome guy.
Awe that means a lot thank you so much 🤍🤍
Thank you for the boucle-hate ( + “almond mom beige” LOL)
That s Daddy. Design Daddy. Haha your last comment. So on board with all you mentioned . THE Mushrooms was as bad as Kitchen withes and Ducks from the 90s. Stop the insanity . P.S. I love how you dress.
Love from Ottawa
Thank you! 🤍 bringing my sense of fashion in on my videos! Many more to come
😂😂😂 My grandma had so many damn ducks
Yes. Just yes.
Beige and boucle screams walmart
I agree with all
I adore you Design Daddy. Seriously, mushroom decor??
Thanks for watching 😘
Cry😢Sputnik - even Smokey colour with dimming?
My Sputinik is high above the dining table but on a serious dimmer, so not a problem from glare, none. Maybe would be on full power, but it just gives a nice glow but there are 18 bulbs.
Minimalism more often looks like the dude with a tv and xbox propped up on cardboard boxes or “the backrooms.”
Dude, is that a repurposes 1980 leisure suit?
Oh shot i have to cancel my order for boucle chair😢
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong Design Daddy, the chair you're sitting on in this video is squiggly looking to me. I do like it though.
It's for the camera. This way, your eyes are focused at the centre without DD having to dress up in funky clothes.
Lol
I see a man in a black shirt and patterned pants in a yoga pose with big round knees - larger than life and sorry I cannot unsee it 😂
But love your content 👍👍👍
Nick Lewis
Thanks for calling out boring beige. Once in a while somebody tries to push it as a trend. It comes back only to crash & burn right away.
It try’s to make a comeback every little while 🤣
Design zaddy more like it
😉
Trust me I’ve no idea what I’m doing 🤷🏼♂️🙋🏼♂️🩷
Boucle all day!
12 carats each????
Earrings????
Dude, that's one ugly chair. Hope part of your plans in 2024 is to replace it.
Leave the squiggly things for the kindergarten décor.
Pre-K teacher here. It's too ugly to put that in a K class. I don't know who are the bozos that thought *this* was a good decor idea.
Why are you trying to terrorize small kids with that stuff?
Immediately searches for Design Daddy Onlyfans. lol!
