I think it's great that Venus has the desire to continue playing at this age.
However, while it makes sense for her to be given a wildcard given her impressive career to date, she will need to compete in smaller tournaments and show that her current ability is worthy of it.
Kimiko Date Krumm, who once played against her at Wimbledon, was 40 years old at the time, but instead of relying on wild cards as much as possible, she earned points and entered with her own rank.

Kimiko Date at the age of 40 was far superior than Venus at the same age. Kimiko after the age of the 39 on her comeback beats Sharapova, Safina, Penetta, Muguruza, Osaka , Stosur & Li Na.😱😱 All of them except Safina are slam champion. It also proved how weak that era was.

As long as they hit the ball straight to the tall player with a nice high bounce ,the tall player can win points. If they make the tall player run by hitting angle shots and short low paced balls that don't bounce, drop shots the tall player is history.

Fun and interesting fact: Venus Williams first professional match was against Japanese player Naoko Sawamatsu. Hibino's parents were big fans and so they named their daughter Neo after Sawamatsu. Fast forward 30 years later and Venus plays against another Nao here. If that is Venus's last match then there are Japanese players named Naoko as bookends on both sides of her career.

This is just sad to watch. She has had a tremendous career. Better than the vast majority of players, never mind internet nobody commenters. And yet, I cant help but think, why? What does she have to prove? She could easily spend her time coaching, doing YT videos, etc, and still be around the sport, helping a LOT of young players come through. She could manage players if she wanted to. I just dont understand playing against pro's, when she has zero chance to win any more titles. She's just getting older, and slower. Things wont be getting any better from here, and will only get worse.
Then there's the matter of her blocking potential young players coming up. Imagine if some great junior prospect could have played, what a thrill that would be for some young kid? And to be denied by some over the hill past champion who doesnt know when its time to shuffle off quietly into the night and enjoy a well deserved retirement. So sad.
