As a white man in Florida, I am all for my kids learning the true history of this country. From the good, to the bad, all the way to the sadly insane racist history, I believe my kids need to know it all. Otherwise we are doomed to repeat it all.

The textbook we teach has a website (for online books etc) and they have three editions, Texas, Florida, and all the other states. The Texas and Florida variations of history and other subjects are so different from any other states that they had to have separate books. I feel sorry for the children.

I'm 60, and it's been only about 2 years since I learned about the Tulsa massacre, and I live in the Illinois! I was stunned that such a significant event had been left out of my American history classes. The whitewashing of history is appalling!
I learned about slavery when I was in 9th grade, and I was very interested and sad about what was done to black American People. I believe it needs to be taught in schools.

They put in the time to get their degrees and all necessary state prep tests to get state certified. When I got to college I took African American History as an elective. After the first few weeks I realized I had missed out on a huge part of our US history. I felt angry and cheated by my highschool education.

I saw an interview with Marvin Dunn and immediately ordered a copy of A History of Florida through Black Eyes. After I finish it I plan to pass it on to our local highschool here in Bloomington MN with a note that Florida kids can't learn their own history in their schools. More and more, I am ever so thankful that my high school history courses were taught by Black and Native women. Before I graduated high school, I thought that what I learned was the standard. I was so ignorant of the actual standards in the 00's. Lord, if they think reading Bell Hooks is just about the worst thing you can do, they wouldn't begin to fathom my reading lists. My favorite section in history class was about the racist origins of police and their brutality. I went to school in SoCal, so Rodney King was very much still on our minds. That was followed by a whole section on the Black Panther Party and their ideologies, with special assignments for Mumia Abu-Jamal's work. We listened to his radio show and read his books. That was just one section in my history class. It was enlightening and it made me a critical thinker. I came to realize the ignorance my own parents had because they only learned a white-washed version that the Iowa school system provided in the 70's. We read and learned a lot of material that teachers wouldn't dare touch anymore. Are they allowed to even show the Ruby Bridges movie anymore, you know the one we all watched in elementary school? Teachers and students deserve better and our nation deserves better. It's dangerous what DeSantis and the right are doing. Gaps in knowledge and the suppression of history make us susceptible to propaganda, allow us to dehumanize or gaslight the experiences of others, and ease a path forward in which we repeat our tragic history.
Through all of this, I'm most concerned about the children of Florida. This vacancy in their education will hinder them in whatever course of higher learning they pursue. Even if they never seek more learning opportunities they will risk sounding foolish in everyday conversation with their peers. DeSantis is doing them a grave disservice.

Yes, American history is history. Slavery, the civil war, the civil rights movements, they're all essential lessons still taught in history classes. CRT however is heavily skewered history that omits certain facts and historical relevancies in order to sell a message over teaching actual history.

I’m not an American nor do I live in America, I have always liked the face that you guys have always documented your histories past and present I love that because as a black Caribbean woman it’s very hard to look up or know our history there’s only so far I can go, even in school there’s is only so much documented of the Caribbean and I hate that, keep fighting for your kids and yourselves, history is very very much important for people.

So the real deal is this...these ppl are still alive. My grandparents went through A LOT as did my parents who are now grandparents. When learning about history, it is possible that your children will be sitting next to the child of a grandparent who was apart of this horrible history. Instead of explaining how grandpa or grandma were wrong, or making grandma or grandpa admit they were wrong, it's easier to just not say anything at all. I just finished the complete unabridged Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was very difficult to get through because of the horrors. The majority of Stowe's characters were based on real-life situations and characters she either knew personally or knew people who did. I understand now the impact this book had at the time. I strongly believe it should be required reading for all high schoolers.

As an empathetic human, she found this very disturbing, and felt that other people needed to know what was going on.

I’m almost certainly in the minority when it comes to this, but I use the term African American if the person in question actually hails from Africa and currently lives in the United States, regardless of skin color, instead of just having African ancestry. With that being said, black is my shorthand way of referring to people of sub-Saharan African descent, especially those who are several generations removed from Africa, like most African descendants in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and even Iraq.

I felt the racism in Florida shortly after I entered the State. We picked up an Afro American hitch-hiker, and obeyed his request to stick to the speed limit...Because he knew that he would be in trouble if we broke the rule...(I'm from Canada).
I have friends that came to visit Florida for the first time Bc of me and they said they could feel the shift in the atmosphere as soon as they entered the state. They have not been back their initial visits. The textbook we teach has a website (for online books etc) and they have three editions, Texas, Florida, and all the other states. The Texas and Florida variations of history and other subjects are so different from any other states that they had to have separate books. I feel sorry for the children.

After I finish it I plan to pass it on to our local highschool here in Bloomington MN with a note that Florida kids can't learn their own history in their schools. More and more, I am ever so thankful that my high school history courses were taught by Black and Native women. Before I graduated high school, I thought that what I learned was the standard. I was so ignorant of the actual standards in the 00's. Lord, if they think reading Bell Hooks is just about the worst thing you can do, they wouldn't begin to fathom my reading lists. My favorite section in history class was about the racist origins of police and their brutality. I went to school in SoCal, so Rodney King was very much still on our minds. That was followed by a whole section on the Black Panther Party and their ideologies, with special assignments for Mumia Abu-Jamal's work. We listened to his radio show and read his books. That was just one section in my history class. It was enlightening and it made me a critical thinker. I came to realize the ignorance my own parents had because they only learned a white-washed version that the Iowa school system provided in the 70's. We read and learned a lot of material that teachers wouldn't dare touch anymore. Are they allowed to even show the Ruby Bridges movie anymore, you know the one we all watched in elementary school? Teachers and students deserve better and our nation deserves better. It's dangerous what DeSantis and the right are doing. Gaps in knowledge and the suppression of history make us susceptible to propaganda, allow us to dehumanize or gaslight the experiences of others, and ease a path forward in which we repeat our tragic history.

I am also white in Florida, and want to say that I want history taught to the kids even if some of it is not pretty. That famous saying "those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it" would indicate that they are erasing the memory of this so they can repeat at least some of it. Possibly even prevent people from seeing it when it is happening right now jim crow.

So the real deal is this...these ppl are still alive. My grandparents went through A LOT as did my parents who are now grandparents. When learning about history, it is possible that your children will be sitting next to the child of a grandparent who was apart of this horrible history. Instead of explaining how grandpa or grandma were wrong, or making grandma or grandpa admit they were wrong, it's easier to just not say anything at all. Meanwhile I'm explaining to my black child why grandma doesn't like to go back to Philadelphia, MS.

The others are underpaid, work too many hours and are constantly sick because mask mandates and children disclosing they are sick and making Covid positive kids wear a mask is illegal-you can’t even ask if they’re Covid positive. I just finished the complete unabridged Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was very difficult to get through because of the horrors. The majority of Stowe's characters were based on real-life situations and characters she either knew personally or knew people who did. I understand now the impact this book had at the time. I strongly believe it should be required reading for all high schoolers.

As an empathetic human, she found this very disturbing, and felt that other people needed to know what was going on.

I'm sorry but I humbly disagree with your statement. At the heart of this move by Desantis is racism. There is no other logical or intellectual explanation for it. This all started with CRT and now have morphed into just teaching African American history. Attacking black people, their history and very way of life is a net plus for any white politician in this country if they are so inclined, because they have realized they have a captive and willing constituent that are happy with white suppremacy and this is really all that matters to them above all other issues. I graduated in 1979, Georgia. I was not taught a true American history! While trying to apply to college I found my education was inadequate! I had never heard of Tulsa massacre, Juneteenth and other historical times that I now spend time trying to learn about! True History is important!

I assumed you meant to say African AMERICAN academic community as opposed to African academic community since Ron DeSantis’s decision to ban the AP African American studies course concerns people of African DESCENT living in the United States and in Florida specifically and African AMERICAN history, but not Africans and African history generally. I agree that race is a social construct and not an accurate way of identifying groups of humans. I’m almost certainly in the minority when it comes to this, but I use the term African American if the person in question actually hails from Africa and currently lives in the United States, regardless of skin color, instead of just having African ancestry. With that being said, black is my shorthand way of referring to people of sub-Saharan African descent, especially those who are several generations removed from Africa, like most African descendants in the United States, the Caribbean, Latin America, and even Iraq.
