I'm wondering if you can tell us if there is a way to make Libreoffice the default application to open any word processing document simply by clicking on the icon, whether or not one has saved that document in Libreoffice in the past? I have thousands of Word documents and it's cumbersome to have to manually open each one the first time through Libreoffice. I'm wondering if there's a way to make it the default rather than "Text Edit." Thanks for any help you can offer!

I will watch the video again, but from what I understood you talk about going through the application to open a document, but is there anyway to set it as the default so you don’t have to open the application first and then open the document from inside Libreoffice? I’m trying to find a way so that when I click on a document it automatically opens Libre office and uses it to open the doc in the same way Word does. Either way, very helpful, much appreciated!
Click on the word document (make it blue) then click archive on the top left, select show info, select open with. Here you can change the default setting in Libre 👍

Thanks for this great alternative. After installing Libre Office on my Mac, can I safely uninstall my old MS Office from my Macbook? Won't it affect the compatibility and the use of old MS Office document types on my MAC?
I had Open Office running on my old Mac. Later, I answered an ad on Facebook for MS Office for a one-time charge of $50. It wouldn't run on High Sierra. So, I hacked the machine up to Big Sur, which broke my Filemaker/Keynote/FCP workflow. So, I bought a Mac mini M1. It took two weeks of work with Microsoft support to get the migrated suite working. My Open Office documents did not survive the migration, and did not exist on the backup drive. So, I brought up the old machine and copied the missing docs to a USB thumb drive. I prefer Open Office for word processing because of its superior rendition of tables, but Excel has no peer, so I use Open Office of WP and Excel for spreads, using AppleScript to quickly create Keynote charts from Excel data
This has me a tad confused. Here’s why. I have aMac and of course, I exist in a world of Windows users. They, typically, send me stuff in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I open these files in, respectively, Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Yes, sometimes they look a bit different, but not very different. When I want to create a file for someone with Word, Excel or PowerPoint, I do so in the Mac equivalent and export it in the MS equivalent. Simple and quick. Never had any recipient complain. So what am I missing here?
