The Q2 (or the Q-series to be more precise) has been an 'objet du désir' for quite some time now. And taking a page from my father's book, who bought a long desired VW camper van from the inheritance my grandfather left him, I sold my Fujifilm X100V and my Fujifilm X-T1 and together with the small part of the inheritance my father gave me, bought the Q2 a few months back. Couldn't be happier. Thank you Hugh, for your insights and inspiration.
Never ran out of battery, never needed 24mm or 35mm, never needed the f:1.4, never need 47 meg pixel. If you are in the Market for this kind of Camera and you have money, get the Q and you will love it. Q2 will give you more stuff that you'd not miss on the Q. I took it to Iceland, Istanbul, Cayman, LA and I could not be happier. If you are a troll, nothing will ever make you happy!
Always fun to watch these reviews to see what "people from the other side of the tracks" shoot with! As usual, great review Hugh. I always appreciate that you don't just regurgitate spec sheets and marketing material but tell us stories and take us on journeys with your narrative.
Ok, as mentioned before, I am 2/3rds into a two week European trip. I am sitting at the airport outside Stockholm waiting to return to London with my Hasselblad 500 C/M at my side. My back hurts, but I anticipate the joy of my images when developed in a few weeks. This camera, the Q2, small agile and with resolution to beat the band, it it the reason to join the 21st century? Hold that thought. This moment, the flight had been announced as delayed. And my tired feet and back would appreciate a smaller, light wait camera that will not rob my eye of the resolution I demand. I assure you, in two weeks, in my darkroom, my tired back will be forgotten and the only thing that will matter is the image. Maybe I need to try one of these modern joys. Charlie
I've gone from a q2 to a q2 monochrome and back to a q2 reporter, which arrives tomorrow. The monochrome was fantastic but at times i missed the color and went for the q2 reporter.
I know this video was made some time ago. But I hope by now you’ve figured out that the EXIF data can be seen when you open Properties in the Raw file. It does show which focal length used to create the image.
Q2-M all the way. Loved the Q2, yes it saved my bacon several times, but the Q2-M is pure pudding for a monochrom fetish…. It’s never let me down and never complains about being 2nd fiddle to the M246 paired with my Noct 1.2 (1966 version) or M10-M & Noct 75mm. A bigger privilege to have these 3 in my bag one could never know. And in a pinch on the fly, anything - even a rainstorm, the aforementioned Q2-M is my loyal wingman. small light and fast. Swift and certain!
Not sure I understood half of what you said in regards to all those the specs, however your voice and personality are captivating... it’s like meditation for photography! 😁👍👍
I wonder if there will ever come a time when Leica offers IBIS - if not, what would be the reason for retaining a fixed sensor when increasing sensor resolution begins to test the user's skill in compensating for camera shake? Surely Leica has the mechanical and electronic engineering expertise to implement such technology, and cost should be of quite low importance given its affluent user base. Most competitors(?), with the notable exception of Canon, offer a magic anti-vibe sensor option within their line-up.
As a New Yorker living in exile (FLA) I just have to thank you for the interesting scenery from a magical place ( and trains with snow) I watched an entire episode about a camera I will probably never purchase, but somehow now I want to grab my old film camera an burn a roll or two (Agfa 25 where are you?)And the best way to end a show “I love NY”
Let's accept it, we all are biased when it comes to Leica. Some are biased towards an opinion that Leica cameras are expensive & substandard piece of equipment while others are biased towards the feel and inspiration that only a Leica can facilitate them with. I, just like you, belong to the latter genus of creatives and I absolutely love anything with the name Leica on it. Even though I cannot afford any of it just yet. But I am determined that the first gift I'll buy myself when I will be in a position to do so will be a Leica. I absolutely loved your review of the Q2. I have enjoyed each one of your videos on various Leica cameras. Please keep them coming. It is only you, I believe, who does justice to the reviews of gear with a red dot. Your videos perfectly capture what it feels like to shoot with a Leica through their sedate nature. They're almost like a heartfelt love letter to the camera brand we have come to love so much, though it occasionally breaks our heart too by not giving us all that we want. But then that is also one of the many reasons our relationship continues.
You're quite welcome, Mr. Brownstone. Also, I would love to see some B Roll of the Leica M10 ASC edition. Even if it is not worth a seperate review, just publish a few minute long video giving us beautiful shots of the camera. I don't think Leica has /will release a promotional video for that camera.
Fascinating - as Spock would have said. Another great Leica review, although will there ever be another box set in the style of the Leica SL quadrilogy? A camera review encased in a grand sweep of European history, fascism, world war and the birth of miniature format photography: what a wonderful thing! Bravo, Leica for sticking to its Q format in an age where reviewers seem obsessed with the accrual of more and more features rather than attention to basics, executed with precision and wisdom. My heart is heavy, though. A fixed lens has to be the right one for its owner, and 28mm is too wide for me. A 40mm 1:1.8 or 1:2 cropping to 55mm would have me running to the Leica Store, so for now I’ll leave my piggy bank in one piece until it’s heavy enough for that CL.
I so understand, Simon! Thank you, too, for the kind words. I am sure I channel some combination of Spock and Kirk, as I remain a huge Star Trek fan, seeing it as a nine year old when it first aired in 1966.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Me too. I think I first saw it in ‘68 and loved it ever since. I made my children sit down to all 79 episodes. What a terrible parent !
Original q was a breakthrough camera for me, I use medium format normally. I use the q for 1/1000th work in the studio mostly. When I work with dancers. I just wish I could shoot tethered with it...tested the phase 150mp, that’s special with backlit sensor. But medium format is so slow compared to the q. For those who are interested, you can shoot 15 images on a 300mb card before it need 25 seconds to clear the buffer. Important if you shoot moving subjects..
Nobody cares about the one slot because the Q2 is not a 'professional' camera. On the other hand, the new consumer Nikon Z7 has been burned down to the ground LOL
Gratitude and compliments to the concentration evidenced here, on the enduring values of photographers raised on the rangefinder Leica, and the probably greater commitments of immigrants to the experience in later life. We know what this perspective is. Given the verification registered in this review, of the stunning value offered in the Q2, may I offer the thought that the camera represents, to anyone who has deferred exploring the 28mm focal length in his own activity, this glorious package is priced beneath par for the value (to say nothing of price) of the lens, itself. An enthusiast for the M10 series need sacrifice nothing, if he's willing to exploit Leica's empathy for high-speed medium wide-angle responsiveness in the diminutive, impertinent thing, which travels with his M kit as a convenience without drawbacks.
Leica is lustworthy. A compact Leica (made by Leica) is exponentially lustworthy because it's always handy. I had the Q. Now it's time to grow up to the Q2.
I got unduly excited when I thought the title was saying it was 1/4 of the M10 price (rather than M10 and lens)!! Still , in Leica world this seems a heck of a bargain! Now, what is the Zeiss ZX1 going to bring to the table?
I pre ordered mine yesterday, now waiting for Capture one to support, I'm hoping its in the works. But expect it'll be awhile before I get my camera. Take care.
'THIS GIVES THE OPTION TO GO TO MANUAL MORE OFTEN -WHICH IS A JOY' Love that sentence, for those MF lenses uses this is one of the attributes to shooting MF lenses, seeing the results of the image in front of you while you interact with the lens giving you that satisfaction of what you want and need, basically all is driven by choice so in letting the camera or lens allowing you to take control of the focusing is even more so rewarding. EVF is an amazing technology that sees to you seeing the fruits of your labor (manual focusing) more clearly increasing once involvement in the business of photography.
In the UK a used Q will cost you nearly 3k and a new one is just over 3.7k, so when you think that you can have the Q2 for just over 4k new that's pretty good value for money... So you could sell the Q2 after say 4 years of use and maybe reclaim 75% of your outlay, so this camera is only costing you 1k over 4 years......
Edlerer it depends on the person. But I’m pretty straightforward. I think most people sense my genuine enthusiasm for what I’m doing and my genuine interest in their particular look.
Sovereign Media I no longer have it with me, and apologies - I just don’t recall. But I’ll have one in hand again very soon, and will let you know. :) please ping me if you haven’t seen me report back by the 29th or so!
The sensor is a Tower Jazz. They now launch the M10 R with 47MP. I would love Leica takes the jump with an M11 and offers an EVF version. I know about the traditionalists and the photographic pros and cons of that. But as a choice for blind bats like me it would be great. Also, no more ugly pimple on the M.
The Q2 looks great but 28mm stays great for semi-wide reportage shots, not for portraits. I wish Leica could make 3 models of the Q : between 24mm and 90mm (24-40-90 would be awesome)
Really feel you on the 40mm for more contextual portraits - what a great focal length, I wish there was a compact that catered to it. Then again, a GX9 (or used GX80/85) with Panasonic's 20 1.7 isn't exactly conspicuous either - and then there's the flexibility of an ILC.. This is looking like a fantastic camera, and out of my price range as it may, and likely will continue to be, your videos make me appreciate Leicas from another angle than just the same old "marvelling at gems in the storefront" kinda way. And I really appreciate that.
Jenny, I always enjoy your take -- and pretty much always agree with you! Like the GX9 - I think it's always top of list when looking for a more affordable, real world option for great compact street work. Thanks for weighing in.
I’ve been, desperately, waiting for this announcement for the last few days. As soon as this lands in the Mayfair store it’s going to be mine, oh yes. As you know it’ll fit nicely in with my recently acquired CL with the 23mm lens and the M10D (as you might remember).
Rafa Laperal good question. I can’t say with certainty, as I no longer have the camera and am simply not in a position to evaluate case by case. However: while the body shell dimensions are, I believe, identical, the battery is not nor is the right control wheel. Anything that relies on those two things being unchanged may not work as well or at all.
Very confused by the mechanical vs electronic shutter examples in the 4K rolling shutter test. Isn't video on all digital cameras sensor based e-shutters?
Intro song has me like, "Leica... tastes like chocolate!" Ok seriously for a moment: I know hating on SquareSpace is like THE IN THING now, but remember that guys like Hugh, Matt Day, Sean Tucker, and Ted Forbes are all Square Space affiliates. SquareSpace helps these wonderful guys. That's 4 good guys and 4 good reasons not to go all pitchforks-and-torches on SquareSpace. Just food for thought.
Another gem. Question, in the Q2's crop mode, I noticed the images actually have the "look" of the lens equivalent, is this due to processing hocus pocus? Not complaining, they look inscrutable. I would also like to see SOOC images.
Greetings from Pakistan. Great videos you do. Love your presentation style. one of my favorite photography presenters on youtube. Keep up the good work.
Enjoyed your passionate explanation and description of your workshops. I was in NY City a few months ago and wished I had a Q2 then. Now I have one...would make a nice birthday present for myself :-)
I’m really interested in this camera, but I'm wondering how it AF compare to TL2 or CL (for me this is the weakest point of these cameras)? Can it focus on moving subject at ISO 800/1600 (street shooting at night)?
Tapper's Reviews sorry - I should have been clear in my reply (though I mentioned this directly in the video): it has optical IS in the lens itself, no IBIS. Thanks for the correction!
WIll it compliment my recently bought month old Leica CL (Street Kit) with 24mm and 35mm lens, or should I sell the Leica Q2 instead ? I was tempted to buy the Leica Q at first before the CL but the sub-par EVF led me to choose the CL instead. Hope to get your opinion
Meng Shi Lim There is so much that smartphones can do; there are so many surprising instances when smartphones can compete with dedicated cameras. But this was an example where it couldn’t. I find that interesting, because it was non-obvious that this would be the case.
Really love your pictures especially the black and white ones.. Your channel is inspiring! Does Q2 have monochrome evf and lcd when shooting monochrome pictures?
@@3BMEP Thank you for the reply:) Q2 & Q2M are both wonderful cameras. Have been thinking which one should I get for Xmas. I love taking black and white photos but never try a monochrome camera. Q2m seems like a joy to use. Tough choices..
Guillaume Zammith It’s all about your preferred field of view and purpose. It’s all about auto vs manual focus; fixed vs. interchangeable lens mount; stabilized vs. unstabilized glass ; EVF vs OVF; handling and cost. If you lean mostly toward the first choice in each pair, get the Q2. If budget is an issue; if you intend to print large; if you like the field of view, get the Q2. But if the M240 talks to you, you have a valid answer, too. Keep me posted!
Sorry, I really think the images are way too soft for being portraits. the ones at the beginning all were soft focused--- a bit out, except for the African American one with the earphones.
I have tried to get an answer on this, why not doing it again. Small cameras like Canon g7x II and Panasonic LX100 II have a weak sound source. No mic input and usb, hdmi, bluetooth. I want to edit videos without synchronizing image and sound. It’s been bugging me for some time and I don’t want to get stitched :)
I know, It's unbelievable camera, I am Leica lover since 1980 from M 4, now I am 74, what you think I have it? your speech gave me about buying energy. Thanks.
Vajir Musabji I think it addresses every issue I saw in the original Q (which I liked very much) in a complete way., making it a VERY attractive camera. If you shoot street or landscape or travel, given you are already a Leicaphile, offs are you’ll really enjoy it. But: it should always be asked: what can’t you do with what you have that the Q2 can - and how important is that to you? Keep me posted!
Most of the reviews of the Q1/Q2 discuss the "either or": Is it a gateway camera before the M? Is it a substitute for an M. But let me ask (And your "Now I want a Q2 on top of the CL" kind of jumped the gun on me...): What would you think about having both? M240 for example, Or M246 and the Q2? Maybe at a price of a 28 lux+some, we can get the entire package? Is it obsolete? Where do you (If at all) see logic in such a combination (Not causing one to think for hours with which camera to go outside... As it happens today)?
Sharon Leibel The Q2 is a bit of a Rorschach test. Gateway to the M for some, adjunct to others, stand-alone to others again. I prefer the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, and I like small - which is why I enjoy the CL and TL2. But light and small becomes bigger and heavier as one adds lenses. This is why the Q2 is so appealing to me: it’s an alternative to the CL such that sometimes I’d be willing to bring the CL and glass, other times I wouldn’t - which is where the Q2 is beautiful.
That’s a very good analogy. And I can relate to the “stuck with one lens” thing, Especially when it’s a 28 (most people commented that if it was a 35? they wouldn’t think twice...) I can see why most people see it as a great all-arounder, But speaking the CL: Isn’t it just a Leica without the Leica advantages of being full frame? An APS-C camera in a brand that takes pride in being the first full frame mirrorless body ? Doesn’t the CL kind of defeats the Leica advantage and makes it the same as others (Obviously, X100F comes to mind)?
Thanks for the review, Hugh! I always love hearing your thoughts and insights about a new launch, but I also really enjoy seeing your environmental street photography portraits, regardless of camera. The Q2 is certainly an interesting concept, making use of a high-res sensor to provide the functionality of a range of focal lengths with just one excellent and fast lens. The nice thing is that lens remains an f/1.7 lens regardless of the range of focal lengths you can set. For me personally, the wondrous little X100F remains my street photography camera of choice and with respect an outlay of 5 large... well, I'd be using that capital outlay for a digital MF system that begins the designation, "GF".... Cheers, Stephen.
Hello Hugh, first of all thank you, I really enjoy this channel. I have a technical question regarding the digital zoom. If the lens is a 28mm, when you crop to 50mm, you get a 50mm field of view but the image has the 28mm focal character right? if you take a portrait with the 50mm crop, the portrait is going to have the 28mm distortion. Or I'm missing something here?
Henry Deletra you are exactly right - HOWEVER: this is what I was talking about when I spoke of perspective distortion (which another viewer in our little community corrected me on, though for the life of me I don’t remember the exact term): because of the crop, you can move farther away from the subject, reducing that “spoon reflection” kind of distortion. Make sense?
@@3BMEP That you for the quick answer ! I think I'm going to pass by the Leica store to take a few pictures with it and see for myself how the files render. It seem like a really nice small camera for travel/landscape/street :)
@@3BMEP I went to the Leica store and shot a few picture with the Q2. I didn't had the time to dive into all the cameras settings, I just went to the street in front of the store and took a few snapshots. Coming from the M10 I wanted to test the autofocus, and if there were distortion with the digital zoom crop. When I shoot I saw clipping in many images (the sky was very white/bright) so be careful with the overexpose, but for my surprise it was very easy to recover detail in post, even more than with the M10 imo. The files were gorgeous, a lot of detail and very very sharp. I took a few portraits with the 50mm crop and the 75mm and seriously, is hard to imagine that they were taken with a 28mm lens. I d'ont know if is true but in the Leica store they told me the the Q2 has a distortion correction in camera when you use the crops. I would like to make more tests but this camera could be a keeper. I think actually, that the Q represents more the M spirit that the actual M. I think Cartier-Bresson if given the choice would probably took the Q (hahaha).
Leica makes beautiful compact camera cases for the X1, X2, D-Lux, C-Lux, and other Panasonic-made Leicas (the X1 and X2 were made by Leica). Look up the 19554 case for the D-Lux7 camera - it fits the camera perfectly with no room to spare, fully enclosed and protecting the lens, and it looks elegant - not like the old-fashioned camera cases. The point of this is that Leica is making a $5k compact camera with the Q2, and then denying that it's a compact camera by not providing a compact case - only providing ugly photographer cases that are used for system cameras. If Leica were to get their heads out of the sand on this Q2, it would be to provide the elegant carry case type that is available for all of their other compact non-system cameras. The point of that is to keep people focused on what the Q2 really is, and make it fun to carry most places without a camera bag or a half-cover that doesn't protect the lens. I've been using these cases for 15 years, and they make a night-and-day difference in the pleasure of owning a compact Leica camera.
Joshua Uhm is you bought the Q-P and enjoy it - continue to do so. If you really missed 35 or 50mm fov, consider it - or add a Leica CL to the mix instead.
Great content, as always. I have to say, as a guitar player, I understand that the right instrument can inspire you to create better art. That said, I'm not sure I could ever justify the Leica tax with so many other options out there.
Well gee, I could whine, but I won't (But I just might be shedding a tear this very moment). My Q - should we call it Q1? - is all of 4 months old. And now I learn that it's value is lower while the Q2's value is higher. And let's not even talk about the purchase of the M 3 months ago. Here's the deal. I'm happy as hell to own the "old" Q. I'm not gonna cry over the new one. But I did just finish several glasses of wine. I'll see you in NYC for the Workshop. With my Q.
I bought mine 3+ years ago... It's been with me daily, as well as on trips to The Hague, London, Paris, Marseille, the total solar eclipse in Oregon... and Philadelphia. I've dropped it, fell over on it, and generally not been too nice to it (short of outright abuse). And I still love this thing! As interesting as the Q2 is, I have no plans to upgrade. Tip: I didn't tape over the Leica dot - I think that's a bit silly. But I did take a bit of gaffer's tape (NOT duct or electrical tape!) and covered the microphone and speaker holes. These are on the top in front of the hot shoe, and on the back under the four-way button. Zero dust on the sensor, even after riding around on the floor of my car a lot.
I'm a big fan of your videos Hugh, but I wanted to point out that we had to sit through 8 advertisements to get to the end ( hope I counted right). There were 4 brought in by RUclips and 4 embedded in the video itself (3 for SquareSpace and 1 for your workshop in New York). While I am all for advertising I found, in this case, that the ads distracted significantly from the enjoyment of your video. The first one cut you off mid-sentence. Later, I wanted to rewind because I missed a quick shot of yours, but as soon as I rewound I got an ad. It was so unexpected that I thought I was watching another video and backed out, forcing myself to restart the video.
Yes, this new camera must be early fruit of the L-Alliance. No way an organization or company can make that big a leap in technology that quickly without some sort of influx of outside help. It rarely happens. That looks to be an amazing camera. The quality of the imagery looks fantastic. Not a Leica fan myself but it's hard not to think about it with your enthusiasm!
I'm writing this from a different prospective than I would have ordinairly... yesterday, the Leica Store here in San Francisco combined the opening reception for their current exhibition with the rollout of the Q2 (as well as a special version of the Monochrome... but hold that thought). I did indeed have a chance to get my grubby paws on a Q2. Impressions? Pretty much everything you reported on it (I didn't have the opportunity to actually take it out for a week...) But, I do like it. Not that I would give up my current stable of cameras, but still it sounds like it would be worth owning. I put my name on their list...
Hugh I'm a great fan of your work. I currently shoot with a Z7 and Zeiss Milvus basically I have most focal lengths I just love the IQ they give. Lately I've been thinking maybe I need a walk around camera. As IQ is very important to me I was either thinking of the Q2 or CL. Whats got me into action my local store has a 20% off everything sale for 3 more days so..... I travel a lot and love doing urban type shots not really street/people. Q2 or Cl with 2 lens, your thoughts would be greatly appreciated
You've already got a great ILC mirrorless. If you like 28mm and 35mm FOV, go for the Q2. Then again, the CL with SummicronTL 23mm f/2 is even smaller; the 35/1.4 SummiluxTL is spectacular at a 50mm FF and IQ of this package is INCREDIBLE. It's what we own (in addition to the SL2 and SummicronSL 35/2). If you can really get 20% off that Leica gear, whoa!
Hugh thanks for your time effort in replying. I didn't end up purchasing as I couldn't get hands with either Q2 or CL2 given the cost I wanted to make sure I liked either in the hand, you know what I mean Its are. As Arnie says I'll be back, once the current situation gets back to normal. Keep safe and keep up the content.
you should convince Leica to add in a menu an option to add a 40mm crop. It would be cool to use the function button to switch between crops that one has selected in the menu like it was possible on the GRII. if it had that option and a 4;3 option (cost nothing to do that with an EVF camera) I would buy it right away
So, I guess what you are saying is that I will love the Q2 as much and now more with all of the changes. hmm I was thinking of a CL for lens changeability but then I am not a bank. My Q type 116 and my D-LUX 109 are fun cameras. I brought my Q to Thailand and just went around the neighborhood and down the river and used every focal length and just had fun switching them out with a touch of a button. The 2 is not the P correct? I see the markings as 2 so I am happy with that. Should I even trade in (I never trade in) or just play with both? ("I am not a bank") Maybe I should check out LEICA in BH and talk to this lady who set me up with my original. More later on... I know I will be impressed with the new Q2 and may just hold back from the CL for a moment. The Q type 116 is 5 years strong and I got mine in 2016 with no regrets. I should not walk into that LEICA store at all.
The questions always are: 1) what can't you do with what you have already that you can with the new gear; 2) does it really matter; and 3) is switching the best use of your funds? Only you know the answers. Happy thinking! :)
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions it’s ok. I just go through phases where I waffle about putting all my various kits in a pile and sell them off the buy a Leica. But I stop when I realize ‘well, but then Lenses!’ This combo is ideal. For me, the perfect rangefinder lens is a 35. I owned a Biogon for many years. As I age, I worry about manual focus. So, AF. And this idea, that I could see either a 28 or a 35 image with AF and close-up... oh baby.
You're funny.
Thanks Hugh. I'm a newcomer to this channel and am enjoying being spoken to, instead of spoken at.
Selfpowered I understand. Welcome!
Always fun to watch these reviews to see what "people from the other side of the tracks" shoot with! As usual, great review Hugh. I always appreciate that you don't just regurgitate spec sheets and marketing material but tell us stories and take us on journeys with your narrative.
Bertram Photography So happy you enjoy the work!
I love the bnw photos you took from the train journey to new York.
I really appreciate the details and deep insights you provide. I just sold my Leica CL & lenses and my X100V and got a Q2. The pictures are amazing.
Enjoy!
Ok, as mentioned before, I am 2/3rds into a two week European trip. I am sitting at the airport outside Stockholm waiting to return to London with my Hasselblad 500 C/M at my side. My back hurts, but I anticipate the joy of my images when developed in a few weeks.

I assure you, in two weeks, in my darkroom, my tired back will be forgotten and the only thing that will matter is the image.
Maybe I need to try one of these modern joys.

Keep me posted!
....Missed the shot eh ! the camera is a light collector - any may do to a masterpiece in the right hand :)
With so many upgrades and improvements on the Q2, I’m anxious to see the SL2.
Darned fine point!
The SL2 is here.. it's called the S1R.

John Herzel Thrilled for you - what a joy to receive such a note!
Arjun Roy What a lovely, generous and kind note. Thank you so much!
Note to myself: soothing voice .. must use this when i have trouble falling in sleep!
Sometimes I put MYSELF to sleep!
Even The Way to Eden? My God, man.
I could have let the kids off that one, and I wanted to. But that would be 78 episodes. How would I ever teach them to be completer-finishers?
Shore Leave!!!!
Thanks for sharing such a unique and informed perspective!
But theres only one card slot.....just kidding
Jerry Wade 😆
Nobody cares about the one slot because the Q2 is not a 'professional' camera. On the other hand, the new consumer Nikon Z7 has been burned down to the ground LOL
@@mauriziomauricone How many cards have had fail in the past? Just being curious.
Just a reminder folks - there were no second card slots in the film world.
oliver Lison : zero
Thanks Hugh - I love your videos. They continue to inspire my interest in photography. All the very best stay healthy in these times. Take care
Hugh Brownstone and Jeff Goldblum are spirit animals. Love it!
Still working on getting to visit to NY, NY. Hopefully this year. Like the Q2 perhaps at a later time for me. Thanks
Enjoy in any case - both are wonderful, neither without flaws, both with tremendous personality. :)
Take care.
John R enjoy!
EVF is an amazing technology that sees to you seeing the fruits of your labor (manual focusing) more clearly increasing once involvement in the business of photography.
just got a used sony rx1r ii....lets see if i like it after a few months...if not, i will check out the Q2 or Q
Leica Rangefinder is different system and still win my heart
In the UK a used Q will cost you nearly 3k and a new one is just over 3.7k, so when you think that you can have the Q2 for just over 4k new that's pretty good value for money... So you could sell the Q2 after say 4 years of use and maybe reclaim 75% of your outlay, so this camera is only costing you 1k over 4 years......
Richard Jones That makes it easy...😜
Good example for how many ad's can you squeeze into a 22:24 minute video!
Without them feeling line ads actually
What is your pickup line to ask people if you can take a shot? Still struggling with it.
Edlerer it depends on the person. But I’m pretty straightforward. I think most people sense my genuine enthusiasm for what I’m doing and my genuine interest in their particular look.
Thank you for this review! What is the resolution for the 50mm and 70mm crops?
Approximately 15 and 7 megapixels, respectively.
Was there a crop in 4K video? I’m assuming so since it’s the same sensor as S1R
I wish Leica could make 3 models of the Q : between 24mm and 90mm (24-40-90 would be awesome)
fthprod photo-video I’d get that 40! 😊
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions me too ! I always love to shoot with 40mm lenses or equivalent on my Mamiya C220 ;)
The Q2's crop modes do excellent portraits, even at 75mm.
As always, a thoroughly engaging review and presentation. No wonder camera companies like Leica sends you bodies and lenses for review!
:)
Sam, excited for you - you're certainly in a position to judge how they compare in the real world - keep me posted!
Update: Pre-ordered :) 📷
Game changer! Love my Q but. . . Thanks Hugh for a real perspective.
Glad to be of service! 😊
Are the accessories of the Q compatible with the Q2? E.g. L bracket, leather holder, etc etc...
Rafa Laperal good question. I can’t say with certainty, as I no longer have the camera and am simply not in a position to evaluate case by case. However: while the body shell dimensions are, I believe, identical, the battery is not nor is the right control wheel. Anything that relies on those two things being unchanged may not work as well or at all.
your opening music sounded 98% like "Chocolate" by The 1975. Not a bad thing - one of my favs. Love the channel

Huh - don’t know it. I use epidemicsound.com. Glad you appreciate our work!
Thanks Hugh for confirmation of my decision 😊
Very confused by the mechanical vs electronic shutter examples in the 4K rolling shutter test. Isn't video on all digital cameras sensor based e-shutters?
I hope the Leica M10 upgrade will have 47MP too.
Intro song has me like, "Leica... tastes like chocolate!"
Ok seriously for a moment: I know hating on SquareSpace is like THE IN THING now, but remember that guys like Hugh, Matt Day, Sean Tucker, and Ted Forbes are all Square Space affiliates.

Another gem. Question, in the Q2's crop mode, I noticed the images actually have the "look" of the lens equivalent, is this due to processing hocus pocus? Not complaining, they look inscrutable. I would also like to see SOOC images.
Hugh, that last haircut is coming to an end... time for another one😁

Enjoyed your passionate explanation and description of your workshops. I was in NY City a few months ago and wished I had a Q2 then. Now I have one...would make a nice birthday present for myself :-)

@@3BMEP timing is everything but likely this would have to be next year
I’m really interested in this camera, but I'm wondering how it AF compare to TL2 or CL (for me this is the weakest point of these cameras)? Can it focus on moving subject at ISO 800/1600 (street shooting at night)?
Rafał I will let you know next time I shoot with it in a couple of weeks.
Wish the Q and Q2 had a 35mm lens instead of a 28mm Yeah I know you can crop, but I don't like to. Sticking with my Fuji X100F.
I understand.
Love the camera my only concern is no IS and now having 47mp can be an issue with slower shutter speeds negating the advantage of 47mp
Steven Kornreich valid concern!
I thought the Q2’s lens has OIS. Am I wrong? EDIT: specs say it is.
I can't give you a definitive answer (I'm asking myself the same question) until I've had both in hand for a shoot or two. In the works.
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Keep me posted ! Thank Hugh
How could you have compared the iPhone X with the Q2 in your train track shots comments?
Meng Shi Lim There is so much that smartphones can do; there are so many surprising instances when smartphones can compete with dedicated cameras. But this was an example where it couldn’t. I find that interesting, because it was non-obvious that this would be the case.
Really love your pictures especially the black and white ones.. Your channel is inspiring! Does Q2 have monochrome evf and lcd when shooting monochrome pictures?
Thank you! And: yes, it does (and I use it just that way). 😊😊🖖🏻
@@3BMEP Thank you for the reply:) Q2 & Q2M are both wonderful cameras. Have been thinking which one should I get for Xmas. I love taking black and white photos but never try a monochrome camera. Q2m seems like a joy to use. Tough choices..
Hi Sir, I'm selling my Canon gear to get a Leica but still don't know which one between a Leica M240 or a Q2. What do you think?
Super cool. Thanks for your review :) Can totally understand why you are biased :) The Q2 looks like an amazing camera.
Thank you, but I'll stay with my Q and wait for the next model... the Q3!
fast forward to the year 2023
So, cheaper S1 batteries can be used in the Q2? They don't look the same but haven't had them in hand to confirm.... anyone tried this?
Hello Hugh, thank you so much for your analytical form of review. I really enjoy your intellectual way of looking at photography. Awesome!
Don Harrington Thanks, Don!
Never take off the hotshoe slide? Is flash photography not recommended with this $5000 camera?
Does it have compressed RAW now?
I have tried to get an answer on this, why not doing it again.
Small cameras like Canon g7x II and Panasonic LX100 II have a weak sound source. No mic input and usb, hdmi, bluetooth. I want to edit videos without synchronizing image and sound. It’s been bugging me for some time and I don’t want to get stitched :)
The answer is: get a different camera! Seriously. :)
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions you drunk liar, there must be something! No is unfortunately not in my vocabulary. 😜
Stephen Scharf I know you would, Stephen, and the resulting images would be brilliant!
@@3BMEP You are too kind, Hugh. Cheers.
Let me know what you think!
Henry Deletra I think you’re right: I think HCB would have preferred less futzing, more time for composition and positioning.
What about the video? does it crop or do you still have 28mm?
Wow I just turned on the echo on my audio making Hugh's voice authoritative.
Hah! Hammer of Thor!
@@3BMEP I was thinking more along the lines of Churchill. But hey, Thor works fine.
Would you guy recommend getting this over the Q as an upgrade. I just bought the Leica Q-P 3 months ago...
Joshua Uhm is you bought the Q-P and enjoy it - continue to do so. If you really missed 35 or 50mm fov, consider it - or add a Leica CL to the mix instead.
@@3BMEP Thank you for the response! Will keep those points in mind.
Great content, as always. I have to say, as a guitar player, I understand that the right instrument can inspire you to create better art. That said, I'm not sure I could ever justify the Leica tax with so many other options out there.
Brent O'Dell I understand. 😎
Well done, as always. Anyone know what song that is with the sexy guitar riffs? Ty
With my Q.
Philip Shucet ah, the value of emotional intelligence - and wine judiciously applied, Philip! Looking forward to seeing you there!
I bought my Q a year ago, so I feel 1/3 of the pain you do.
James P thanks for sharing your Q experience, perspective and tips!
I promised that I would look to see precisely there those ads fell, but I didn’t follow through. I’ll own that - sorry. Will do better next time.
as is the youtube world ...
I'm new here but I really like they way you explain your view forward..
I think I might just like you
xyla aqsa Welcome!
Great video. You're like the Jeff Goldblum of photography videos.

Bill Daniels keep me posted!
Great informative and entertaining review! I did not know that
Robert Downey Jr had a day job!

Is it another Sony based product?
Blackwing Visuals I do not know with certainty. I suspect the EVF is, the sensor not. But what do I know?
Struggling to think of something positive to say sadly about the equipment! However your reviews and comments are entertaining; ) thanks
Is it worth upgrading from the Q? I love my Q.
Harpreet Bedi what is it you can’t do with the Q that you can with the ‘2 - and truly want? 🤔
Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions Haha. That’s exactly what I wanted to ask you. So far the Q seems perfect. No complaints.
If you use the crop modes, it's a huge upgrade.
you should convince Leica to add in a menu an option to add a 40mm crop. It would be cool to use the function button to switch between crops that one has selected in the menu like it was possible on the GRII. if it had that option and a 4;3 option (cost nothing to do that with an EVF camera) I would buy it right away
Harold6643 Good input!
Will the Q continue or be discontinued?
Calvin Chann I don’t recall Leica covering this point. I will double check.
Thanks. I think it is different enough for them to leave the Q on sale. Like Sony do with most of their cameras.

Welcome!
Man, you're like the Jeff Goldblum of camera reviews.
I get that a LOT. Great actor!
100%
Damn... now you've got me thinking of picking up the original Q at its reduced price... lol 🤣
Love your review on the new Q though... Thanks
You’re killing me with this video. I want one.
Chris Klug so sorry! 😉
So, AF. And this idea, that I could see either a 28 or a 35 image with AF and close-up... oh baby.
I like how you make me hold my thoughts :)
Señor Calabaza 😊
@@3BMEP I've noticed that with each video, I need to hold more thoughts per video :) Hold THAT thought!
