Having grown up with the PS1, these graphics are so dear to me. The frame rate, the motion blur, the limited polygon count. Of course they are very outdated by today's standards, but I feel so nostalgic looking at them. Also it doesn't hurt that RE3 is my entry point into the Resident Evil series.
Hah, mad props to all of you that mastered tank controls from the get go! I sucked at them then, and if possible, I suck worse now 😂 but I very much enjoy watching folks unfamiliar with them struggle, oops…
Tank controls get a lot of flak. I get why people struggle with them, but once you're used to them they're ideal for these types of games. I struggle way more when I use alternative control schemes.
3:00 RE3 starts before RE2, which happens while Jill is unconscious, and ends after it. A *welcome* party was being planned for Leon before the outbreak.
David Somoza Domenech thos game always feels like it takes plaxe after re 2 seeing all the rpd all mess up and the zombies aremore heavly damage with gun shots and grenades burn which i like that details which got some error like brad beong infected late here but something re 3 remake would fet wrong how zombies in that game looks clean and reuse from re 2
Her reaction to tank controls is priceless. I never got the big deal but I grew up with them. I like that you could use both styles on the fly in the RE1 remake.
The controls are not terrible. They make sense with camera angle always changing. Also modern controls of right thumbstick turning left and right and ledt stick forward and back is also tank controls.
No, tank controls are specifically moving forward or backwards and rotation to reorient, like tank treads. Modern controls have position on the left stick allowing lateral movement while the right stick controls orientation. If you can move in a circle while facing on direction, that's not how tanks move.
Pfft, back in my day when this was all fields, I had to walk 15 miles to school, chicken really tasted like chicken, camera angles were fixed, and controls were tank. You young 'uns, with your 4k, your memes, your haptic feedback, and your knife crime don't know you're born. Eee, when I were a lad etc. etc.
Tank controls, if anyone cares about a proper definition, mean that the control of the character is from the character's perspective so different camera angles don't affect how the character is controlled. A good system for fixed-camera action games.
Always great to see people try the classics for the first time and get confused by the controls. I highly recommend the seamless HD projects for 2 and 3 :)
This game was so much fun at the time... the graphics, setting and puzzles and running from zombies, monsters and Nemesis... it was great. One of my favourite Playstation games. I can remember me and my brother playing it and there was so much determination, tension and sense of achievement playing it, we loved it.
I'm 26 and I feel so old watching this. Zoe isn't much younger than me right? Early 20s? I don't understand how she can completely bypass the tank controls PS1 era of gaming. :( Back in my day, grumble grumble.
I’ve never understood people’s hate on tank controls. In a fixed camera game like this they’re a necessity; I’ll admit they’re off putting first time for about 30 seconds but after that they’re easy.
It depends on how they're set up & whether the camera angles make any sense. What pisses me off about them is a) really slow turning circle, and b) angles that change in stupid ways so you have to stop a moment & work out where your character is pointing relative to the camera (or run face-first into a wall, hole in the floor, or enemy in order to test it).
To be fair it’s easier for a child to learn something new. Tank controls are second nature to me because that’s what I learned as a child but I can totally understand how Zoe would struggle as they go against what’s she’s used to (the modern standard in game controls).
Damn Ian, you're a real S.T.A.R(s) for introducing Zoe to this game. Edit: To add more context to what Ian said about RE 3 story, The story takes place 24 hours before and after Resident Evil 2.

It's okay, Zoe. Actual tanks have better controls than tank controls. I think you only get limited Ink Ribbons in this game's hard mode too, since it's quite clear you would like to spend more time with these controls.
Jill doesn’t leave STARS; she got kicked off, along with the surviving members of the alpha team following the events that happened at the Arclay Mansion facility (Resident Evil 1). After the events of RE1, the team tried to report what they’d observed at the mansion (zombies, umbrellas lab and experimentation, etc) but were dismissed as being crazy. It turns out that police chief irons was actually in on it with umbrella from the start (he was on their payroll), and so he had a separate motive for dismissing their concerns and disbanding STARS. Eventually, though, as the outbreak begins (RE2) many officers begin to realize the mistake and recognize that STARS were telling the truth and discover Chief Irons is behind it...and then you get the opening scene of RE3 (with all the cops trying to take on the hoard of zombies, but they’re too little too late and get overrun...ending with the bloody riot helmet on the floor).
I am one of those people that Tank Controls are second nature to 😂😂 Also in the bar, you can leave Brad to sort the zombie out himself. I do it all the time. I ain't wasting ammo on him 😂😂
I may be wrong since it's been so long since I played this, but can't you stomp on the heads of downed zombies to save ammo? I may be thinking of another game. Also, iirc, everytime you "beat" Nemesis when he (it?) shows up, you get gun parts to increase your pistol damage.
wheresatari You can stomp their heads while they are laying down, but you take a little damage. Nemesis only drops weapon parts / items on hard difficulty.
How is this your first time playing this? Classic Resident Evil on PS1 is my childhood! And the controls are awesome and at 37:54 its not where Leon's desk is..........
I feel like people are harsh on tank controls. Maybe I just grew up with them but they are fine. The controls are repsonisve and it gets easy to move around. Probably takes more getting used to tbf
I played through the original RE2 after I finished the Remake, those controls sucked to learn, but after I got the hang of them, I didn't have much trouble. Seriously, that first part of RE2 where you're running to the Police Station sucked so much until I got even somewhat used to the controls.
I love it when people act like tank controls are the most complicated thing in the entire universe. They sit there with the controller in their hands not even trying like “tHeSe cOntRoLS aRe ThE wOrSt!!!!”
Night Cat I played RE2 when I was literally 9 years old and had no issue, again, these controls aren’t that complicated. Also I disagree, you should have to try and put effort into learning the controls of a game, that’s part of the fun of it, you shouldn’t expect the game to play itself, THATS the problem, everyone is so spoiled by games that hold your hand these days that they can’t work it out for themselves when a game doesn’t sign post every little thing about the game in your face.
@@RybatGrimes It's nothing to do with signposting & games playing themselves, it's about common sense. To be fair though, the problem with tank controls is shared by the placement of cameras in each scene. They commonly jump the median & leave the character facing in a different direction than makes sense, & tank controls having no global coordinates to align to means that, every time the camera is somewhere unexpected, the player is left with no idea where their character is facing, causing you to have to stop on each new shot & work out what's going on. Combined with slow rotation & imprecise forward motion, it's just a total pain in the arse. It becomes easier once you know where the camera is going to be, but that's never the case the first time.
Night Cat I do agree there, it is about common sense, and a lot of people severely lack it when playing games with tank controls. People say the same thing about the old Tomb Raider games, and there’s no “issue” of fixed camera angles there, but yet people still act like it’s beyond comprehension, it’s not the games fault you’re a dumbass and don’t want to put the effort in to learn a different style of play. 🤷🏼♀️
@@RybatGrimes Okay, with Tomb Raider especially, the game requires precise movement if you want to stand in front of a lever or something to pull it, which you have to do an awful lot. Its tank controls make this infuriatingly difficult, not because the player is a dumbass or because they need to "git gud" but because the controls are shit. Lara cannot move short distances forwards or backwards & instead leaps, requiring the player to rotate on the spot, leap, rotate on the spot, leap, in a series of triangles until they are in the right position to do the action. Even trying to sidestep (which at least offers a little more precision) involves you doing the triangle thing to get into more or less the correct alignment & then crab walk over to the lever, which makes no sense in terms of how people actually move. The controls are fundamentally shit & a terrible mismatch for that type of gameplay. For fixed camera games it's at least the only viable option, but that doesn't make it any good.
For some strange reason I never played this at the time. I've played every other Resi game, even the shitty PSOne lightgun ones, the Revelations pair and the sheer sorrow that was Resi 6. Also can I suggest, seeing how flustered Zoe gets by horror game starting areas, how about the first The Evil Within? I've played that game through about six times and still get panicky at the first part.
Tank controls are fine, especially since the game uses fixed cameras. If anything, the ubiquitous control scheme in today's games rob any sense of identity and uniqueness.
I went through a lot of time to find a good ISO download of RE3 Nemesis and I'm like "Fuck, it's been years since I've done tank controls!" Are you going to play the RE3 remake when it comes out?
I remember doing a test on easy mode years ago, I wanted to see if I could beat the game with what they just gave you in the item box. And lol I did, almost ran out but goes to show how easy it actually is
RE3 was cheesier than 1 and 2 but it's still great seeing it again. These games got progressively wackier with each installment. Still looking forward to the remake though as it should be fun. Loved the zombie physics in the RE2 remake. I wonder how many times we'll hear STAAARS incessantly muttered by the rocket launcher wielding super zombie known as Nemesis. That got annoying pretty fast. I wonder if it would've been better to not have him say anything but instead make monsterish roars and growls. I mean he doesn't have to say the word stars over and over for us to understand he's going after former stars members. That was very on the nose. To the point of even being a bit cringy. I'm seriously hoping the next generation steps-up their survival horror games. The PS4 had a very small number of them with only a couple being above average in terms of quality. None of which being considered masterpieces. We still have The Last of Us 2 to look forward to however, but I'm not sure if that one qualifies as survival horror. It's more stealth/action/horror but still horror nonetheless. It also focuses very heavily on story and character development which is a must for survival/horror so I think we can give it a pass. PS1 was a golden era for the genre. PS2 also had quite a few really good ones. It wasn't until PS3 that the number of horror games started to go down. We did still see some good ones there though with games like FEAR, Dead Space, RE5 and The Last of Us but not many more. I think it has a lot to do with the amount of talent that's needed to pull off a masterful survival/horror game. Everything from the writing to the directing, story, musical score, artistry, etcetera have to be crafted with care by very talented people and getting a team of people like that together who all share the same vision has got to be a difficult task. Team Silent at Konami was the best at that but even they were only together long enough to make three games. The very fact that they are remembered with legendary status goes to show how imprtant survival/horror masterpieces are to gaming culture.
I always laugh when people complain about the so-called "tank" controls, when in fact very little has changed over the years. In the modern RE games you are still pressing Up to move forward, and Left or Right to turn your character. The only difference is that the camera is now positioned behind the character.

Adam Harris And, you know.... one key difference. You have an aiming reticle to accurately aim your guns 😂
