The way this is filmed is just perfect. It honestly is. Both of them surrounded by the dark, bloodied and battered out in an open field. Nothing out there except them.
Shane with his gun trained on Rick. Rick holding his gun out in a passive gesture. Shane grabs onto the gun and the viewer thinks maybe there is still a chance for them to make amends, only for them to realize it was a trick. Rick stabs Shane. A single gunshot rings out. Rick is metaphorically replacing Shane as the one who will kill to protect his family. He absorbed that mentality moving forward. This moment changed Rick more than any other.

The actor that played Shane wanted his gun to be empty in the scene. He felt like it would have been a better point for Shane to pressure Rick into killing him because he knew Rick needed to become that man in this new world in order to protect his family but he never intended to want to kill Rick. The actor wanted Rick to stab Shane and once Shane dies Rick would pick up Shane's gun only to realize the gun had no bullets in it. But the director and producer vetoed the idea.

Him and Andrew Lincoln had auditioned for the main characters and the producers couldn’t decide who should play Rick and who should play Shane but Jon made it easy by asking to play Shane knowing well that Shane was going to die early into the show. In the comics it’s totally different
Rick is willing to die to try and convince Shane he never actually kills him
Carl comes along and sees what’s happening and kills Shane Rick grabs Shane’s gun and racks the slide but realizes
There was never a bullet in the chamber
    The gun was empty
Shane was trying to push Rick to do whatever it took to survive to protect his family
    Even kill his best friend
At least I think so I haven’t read the comics in ages and Jon Bernthal even stated he wanted this scene to play out like that instead of the final product
This is even shown later on in Ricks last episode when he has that talk with Shane in the squad car
“I’m sorry for what happened…for what I did to you…”
“Man you gotta let shit go….you gotta move on from that….right now you gotta fight! Where’s that animal I want you to dig deep and find him and fight! Rick!

This moment is so much better in the comic in my opinion. Rick was never going to kill Shane. Up until the moment Carl killed Shane, Rick never planned on killing Shane and would've died if Shane really willed it. It's such a big character choice for this to be a planned betrayal rather than a final attempt to save his friend. Its a big difference between comic Rick and show Rick.

    • @TheOfficialBrother

@@Cichyhub it's a big decision as a human being to decide and kill your best friend for any reason. In the show, he's ruthless. Knows what he needs to do and does it. He's a killer. At this point in the comic, he's unsure of what the world is becoming and what he needs to be in order to survive in it. He wanted more than anything for his friend to turn back to him, and was willing to die for it. He was willing to die for the hope that everyone could still be decent. Shane would have killed him if Carl hadnt stepped in and saved Rick... And that's when Rick learns he needs to be more to protect the ones he loves. Shane lost his way Lori wasn't the reason it was his ego, he believed he would be a better father than Rick and a better leader
The reason why Shane isn't a good leader is due to the fact that he'd kill everyone on the team with out any remorse
That's not a good team leader
People forget that Rick legit cared for everyone equally which is why they survived for so long
He cared about everyone's well being
I guarantee you that Shane would of killed everyone in the long run bc he only cared about Lori and Rick's son
Shane was not in the right state of mind and was nit fit to be leader
Rick is such a good leader it's insane despite having to worry about his wife and kids he was able to protect the people around him for so long, I'd rather stay with Rick than Shane who'd kill me right out the gate, Rick always tries his best to find away out of sticky situations and it works most of the time

I feel like Shane wanted Rick to kill him. John the actor who plays Shane even said he wanted Shane’s gun to be empty….
He knew he couldn’t live without Lori (plus unborn baby) and Carl but after Lori and him talked that final time it was clear they’d never be his even if he killed Rick. The Lone Walker represents Shane because he will always be alone even when Andrea was on his side for most part she still chose Dales in the end. The Group was soft and so was Rick and Shane saw that, he hated that upon further resentment of Rick having what he wants it just drove him insane. He believes he did what he to do with Otis but he knew no one would see that, same with Sophia, same with the barn, same with Randall. He had nothing he was looked at with hate, so eventually he stopped caring and let everyone hate him, in any case it made it all the easier. In Shane’s eyes with Randall it was the last straw letting some creep in or continue to live who comes from a group of rapist and could easily betray them and do god knows. He was already there because they were in a gun fight if he got back to his group they’d 100% want revenge. Rick almost did what was necessary but Every time Rick starts to see/do things Shanes way something would pull him away so now Shane only saw one option for him and for his best friend. He sat and thought about this…kill Randall right now and deal with the consequences or the ladder…, so he freed Randall brought him out and killed him then fabricated a story to get Rick to follow him he was being very obvious giving Rick any chance to stop him. But he knew it wasn’t going to happen not until he drew on him even taunting him constantly I don’t see Shane as the type to freeze if he rlly wanted to kill someone he would’ve. Rick still resisted but who wouldn’t that’s his best friend. Shane needed Rick to do this he needed him to harden up he needed his best friend to end his suffering. When Rick was handing his gun over you could see him chuckle like he can’t believe after all this he still won’t do it but in actuality Rick made his choice that’s why it took Shane by surprise when he was met with a knife to chest even when dying he was in disbelief for a moment but as he looked his brother in his eyes he knew he would protect his…their family.
