The Iron Keep would be pretty cool if the aggro range on the Alonne Knights wasn't so absurd. A good tip for the game is to infuse your weapons with lightning. I did a recent playthrough with a lightning Bandit Axe and it was relatively easy.
The aggro range makes sense as you are basically invading the keep that they have sworn to protect so why wouldn't they rush you as soon as they see you.
@@Ironica82 The problem is that they all know exactly where you are the second you walk in a room. The equivalent would be walking up the stairs toward Undead Burg in DS1 and having the hollows at the top swarm you before you're around the corner.
I remember loving the Dragonslayer Axe on PS3 back in the day. Also a lightning axe. Split damage generally isn't bad in this one especially with weapon buffs.
My friends and I had already gone through OG Xbox 360 DS2 like, a dozen times (separate characters, not just NG+) at least by the time SotFS came out. One of my friends was the only one who was able to get an Xbox One at the time, and it was decided I was the best player out of the 4 of us. He handed the controller to me and challenged me to go as far as I could without dying. I went through the Lost Sinner, Duke’s Dear Freja, and the Rotten. Started going towards Old Iron King direction, made it through Huntsmen’s Copse (including the Executioner Chariot), Harvest Valley, and Earthen Peak with essentially no problems, a few scary moments and stressful spots but I actually did do no deaths…. And then I got to Iron Keep. And funny enough, I didn’t even have the dignity of being unfairly killed by the ganks, I died by rolling off the GOD DAMN BRIDGE, I was fighting two of the Alonne Knights and I untargeted so I could roll away after I made an attack, and just yeeted myself into the lava. To this day, I KNOW I had the bridge dimensions memorized, so I’m convinced the Xbox had a slight processing problem and my hitbox to confirm if my character was on the bridge got moved. Oooooooh I still get heated thinking about how I almost 0 death ran SotFS on the first ever time experiencing it, to be taken out by gravity and lava just like that
Also, another problem people have besides the gank squads and traps you can’t prepare for; you noticed the s in your first episode. You actually start DS2 with less s than DS1 (and given I’m only seeing the short version since I just stumbled on your RUclips channel, idk if your chat has told you about this), so to get it where you won’t get hit while rolling, you need to level up adaptability and that increases your s
Funny how you still talk truths and keep editing at minimal for maximum impact. Love that I discovered you on youtube. Recenlty found Chad of Astora channel lying and incorporating bias into his videos. I REALLY REALLY apreciate a fresh take on Fromsoft. You are criminally underrated. And I love your videos. Thank you!
I hear the bashing of Iron Keep. Iron Keep is horrible if you just wanna run to the boss. But this area is SO EASY if you just take it one at a time. Which makes sense to me. You would not charge into a massive fortified enemy keep willy nilly and take on everyone at once then cry about ganks. If you take it slow and bait out one at a time (which you don't need bows or throwables to do) its so easy. All you have to do is walk slowly and aggro 1 at a time. Also lifegems make it possible to still have more than enough healing for the eventual boss.
His weapon is also very bad for this. +7 twinblade. Low damage per hit and low stagger damage. Slash damage is awful for the entire Iron keep. A mace or hammer or even a good greatsword/UGS is the best way to go through this part.
If someone got DS2 on the last promo and is having problems with this place, i strongly recommend taking it once at a time, kitting with a bow if necessary to avoid ganks. The 2nd tip is to pick a great hammer to deal with the ganks that are inevitable. Their 2-handed R2/RT does massive strike damage and knocks down enemies, giving you a lot of breathing room. The only downside is that you have to watch out for durability, but if upgraded enough/you have enough str it will single hit kill those alonne knights. And Large Club is the most accessible of the great hammers. Only requires 26 str (13 if 2-handed), only weights 12. You get it on Lost Bastille after ruin sentinels, going down the stairs on Servan'ts Quarter bonfire (obs: there is a pursuer down there).
for Smelter its a good idea to visit the trader Gavlan and buy the Poison pine resin, as you can poison the Smelter Demon :] gear that boosts fire defence is also prefered
5:10 Okay, as a DS2 veteran, my advice is this: Bait out one enemy at a time, kill them as safely as possible and repeat that process. Get a bow if you must in order to bait the soldiers out without bringing their comrades with them. For the bridge soldier with a bow, either snipe him back quickly or lure the swordsmen off to the side that will notice you very quickly back inside the building and kill him there. Rinse and repeat until there are just the archers on the bridge and in the far back. Lower the bridge (far back Captain sniper can be ignored for now) and lure the archers bodyguard down the ramp and back into the building to avoid the snipers covering fire. Then go kill the sniper. I’d highly recommend using bows and arrows for the enemies guarding the Smelter Demon rather than jumping down right into the middle of two captains firing lines and the three other soldiers that will come down to greet you with sharp metal pointy sticks. This will take a while, and it will likely grate on your nerves, but it works and is effective. The Iron Keep was where I learned patience in Dark Souls games, and I’ve been better at the games ever since. After the Smelter Demon you just have the bridge with the turtle knight trying to break it. He’s annoying and I always try to kill his buddy ASAP so I can avoid jumping over the gap he’d leave behind. Honestly I would recommend killing that Alonne knight until he despawns to avoid the turtle knights trap. After that, game gets a lot simpler
Fromsoft: Bows suck and are always gonna suck. This is the word of Lord Miyazaki. Also Fromsoft: *strongly encourages if not outright demands players to use bows*
Frozen Outskirts is only terrible if all you want to do is run to the boss and are trying to ignore everything else. Iron Passage, IMHO, is much worse.
I was actually really surprised when I played dark souls 2 and found that it was really fun, I didn't understand why people hated it to much, then I discovered iron keep and I was like "Oh I get it now". This place was comically unfun, the sheer amount of nonsense they throw at you is insane. Shrine of amana was bad but it isn't even comparable to iron keep
first off, amazing as always, second... the iron keep is the second worst area in this game. (non DLC) dont feel bad. this is still mazing content... but yeah its absolute bullshit lol, for the smelter you can use a pyromancy called flash sweat that helps and make sure you go back to the spider boss area for a soul and a memory. i hardly ever can catch your streams but if youre still playing that would be a good idea if chat hasent told you, and merry Christmas!
