I don't like to rain on anyone's party, but this really does require someone to comment - and I seem to be the only one. Well - I guess anything goes nowadays.

If you live in the USA, the non-Orthodox Reform movement will accept you as J with a J father. Otherwise, it is necessary to convert, from approaching a local Rabbi/Synagogue. The fact you have a J family background will help your initial argument as to why you want to convert..
Reform is not authentic Judaism, if you want to be jewish, then indeed you can only be jewish either by being born to a jewish Mother (if you are born to a jewish father and a non jewish mother you are Not jewish, reform is not judaism but a different religion created in the recent history), or convert to ortodox judaism. If you are not born jewish, by converting you have to accept Torah law.
