      Too bad the Orioles don't have an owner like Bob Castellini of the Reds, who is well respected in Cincinnati and actually tries to put a decent product on the field from time to time. Very likeable guy from what I seen of him. Importantly, he lets his baseball people run the show. He doesn't meddle and never demands attention.

    The Place to see a Ballgame in the 1990's back when the O's were a contender, the '93 all-star game, and Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gerhig iron man record. The Orioles for a while became the mid-atlantic region's team drawing fans from up in central pa out to West Virginia, DC, down through Virginia. Fans of other teams made road trips, fans of NL teams (before interleague play), and baseball fans in general, made the pilgrimage. It was a true 10 out of 10 experience with the exception of the Yankees fans. Seriously the place had at least 25X the urinals of the 1970's version of Yankee stadium and you guys couldn't figure out the sink was for hand washing.

    Like many Red Sox fans I often go down to Baltimore when the Red Sox are down there. Camden Yards is a great ballpark. Interestingly, its roots go back to the 1986 World Series when the Red Sox played the Mets. People were able to see the sharp contrasts between Fenway Park and Shea Stadium. Fenway was charming and interesting while Shea was unappealing and boring. Those impressions led to the construction of Camden Yards and the other retro ballparks.

    2 factors for why the Orioles attendance has dropped
    1. Team hasnt been very good and the newness of the park wore off.
    2. The Expos moving to Washington DC, the Orioles had built a fanbase in the Washington DC- Virgina area. The Nationals arrival cut into their fanbase and their success over the decade has made it hard for the Orioles

    • @kpk33x
      @kpk33x 3 года назад

      The first outweighs the 2nd. Once the team had a fire sale in 2000 followed by Mussina leaving and Cal Ripken retiring in 2001, there was no one to root for. Attendance was in free fall 4 or 5 years before the Nats arrived. It has stayed mainly down due to the team's refusal to compete.

    • @kpk33x
      @kpk33x 2 года назад

      @@TheBigFiz21 I looked at it as a temporary bump. Attendance recovered some (not back to 90s levels), they were interesting to follow. But wasn't the same, they never really invested in their starting pitching (that's nothing new), Nelson Cruz wanted to sign but they cheaped out on him. You could see it coming in 2016, they never took the next step...now that they had a good team, of trying to keep it. Retrospectively the Davis contract was desperation. I think the fans want a long term solution-they were invested in Adam Jones (my favorite at the time), Markakis, Machado, but only lasted a few years and even in 2012-16 period the starting pitching was average at best (the bullpen was great)...they had to win with offense.

Where it loses in my book is being there in South Philly with the other parks, as opposed to a neighborhood in Center City Philly. I think they were considering a location in Chinatown, which would have been near Rittenhouse Square, tons of restaurants and bars, and other great attractions of Philly. Intimately, they chose the location convenient to suburban and out of town commuters. I get that, but as a result, it is not as nice an experience as PNC, Camden Yards, GABP in Cinci, etc. It is a great umprovement over the Vet, and Philly is a rabid sports town, but I like the others better.
