I like the way you created depth without the horizon. The white water and the waves in the distance leading the eye up on a diagonal to the top right corner, is very effective. Cool painting. I enjoy the impressionistic vibe from Tad's painting!
Really appreciate how much you share publicly about your process and materials. I look forward to starting my outdoor painting adventure and trying some of your techniques. I can’t afford an Anderson Easel etc but have created my own set-up with your help. Thx again.
I love how it turned out. Tad’s was great too. I love plein air painting with local groups here in the Austin area. Everyone’s style is so different and it’s cool to see everyone’s work develop. I was thinking about my process and what I see here- I expend a lot of energy on the sketch composition and blocking in, a little refining, and then it seems like ‘where the magic happens’, the final touches of color and brush strokes is what really gives the painting it’s style and magic, and that’s when I am exhausted. 😂 The first 5/6ths of the effort creates the payoff in the home stretch, but by then I’m tired, hot, and just ready to go home. I identified with Tad, stepping back and realizing that wasn’t the story he wanted to tell, then coming back and adding so much color and vibrance. Perhaps I need to get through the first part faster. Or perhaps, I am realizing as I write this, maybe the exhaustion lowers my inhibitions and I quit painting how I think it should be, and allow my imagination to just take over a bit more, make thicker brush strokes, play with the paint a bit more, like you, applying the directional brush strokes heavy with paint there at the end. Thoughts?
I do try to move through the scrub in or block in pretty quickly in order to save energy for the finish. I have also noticed that when things aren't working out I'll start taking chances and experimenting. This often results in discoveries that I wouldn't have made had the painting gone smoothly!
Painterly like those post-impressions you saw in Europe. And still full of light. Thank you Michael for sharing and connecting us with the glorious ocean!
I really like the square format for this scene and the way you zoomed in on it to give us a more intimate look at the rocks and waves. Reminds me to select what's most important and zero in on it. Thanks Michael!
i was just looking around for some nice oil painting demos and found a few of your gems! love these plein air vids so much :) very helpful for a beginner like me!
Load the brush ...make a stroke... I'm going to write that on a card and tape it to my easel! Along with big shapes in the blocking in seems to be a good recipe for success ... Great pointers ... Luv tad's brush strokes a little bit of Van Gogh there
This is your BEST Video ... by country miles .. is that Robert’s son ,, Hi Chad you so cool ,, Mr. Chamberlin Champion .. I would love to look after this pic .. Robert Yours too .. love love
Great painting. Liked how you dealt with the lack of a horizon by changing the colour of the water and getting textures and colours of the rocks. Can you tell me roughly how long you give yourself on a painting? From memory, i think you have said in some of the videos its about 1 to 2 hours? Again, thanks for sharing the experience - I'm learning a lot. Cheers Paul
thank you for showing all your tools and materials so clear! by the way do you do the underpainting layer and buff it off like that to create a tone underneath the painting? or to clean / prep the surface of the canvas ?
Me gusta mucho tu estilo de pintar de echo tenía guardado una de tus pinturas en pinterest y cuando empeze a ver tus videos me di cuenta de que era una obra tuya. Saludos desde Colombia las obras quedaron increíbles.
I found that large grey tree behind you guys to be more interesting. Also would have attacked that canvas with a larger brush with gusto. Small brush strokes seem lost. Just my two cents. Been watching George Rowlett lately and that guy is inspiring to say the least. Thanks for the video !
Fantastic paintings, guys! ... I like how every artist has own voice and style. It's something that makes art fun. ... Btw. Have you actually seen some whales there? lol ... Great job! Greetings from the EU!
@@chamberlainpaintings That's awesome! It must be great! They are so massive! I saw them only in videos, not in real life. They definitely don't have to be affraid of sharks, not even great white ones! lol If I'm not much mistaken. lol ... Have a good one!
Very nice composition, I love square landscapes/seascapes. So now that you've been in our coast can you tell me a few differences you've seen and do you see yourself painting the mediterranean?
Thanks Martin! I'd love to paint the Mediterranean. I felt like I could have painted in Antibes, but we were only there for a day. Cannes was nice but a little busy for plein air painting. I love how the Med has beautiful architecture near the water. We don't have that in California. Another difference is the waves. The waves are very small in the Med. That's ok though! It allows for beautiful colors in the shallow water. Very clear water as well!
Loved watching the painting come to life. Would you ever paint in some of the foliage at the bottom of the painting to make the feeling of being up on the cliff? Thanks for the videos.
Love it! Great composition and nice harmony of colors! I have a question. Have you ever painted with canvas from Michael’s store? If yes, what do you think about it? Thanks
Good morning a Michael: looks like a great day out west. Love the green water near the big rocks and shore line. Did you use a turquoise color or a teal?A number of months ago you tried Neo Megilp medium. Any opinion about it? Wonderful painting! Strong color. Can almost hear the waves hitting the rocks.
The colors of the water are gorgeous ♡♡♡♡

Thanks Patricia!
Love contrasts in the painting! Another great one! The colors are so beautiful, as always. Thank you!
The way you gave depth to the ocean without including sky was very effective. I need to try to remember that.
Thanks Michael. Solving that problem opens up a lot of compositional opportunities!

I concur .. the less in the picture the better. The sea looks dope, to me, when it’s more a gloopy, waxy, gleaming blob
Fantastic, Thanks from Brazil!!!
Thanks! 😊🙏
Michael! Another great video. You need to come to the U.K.. I moved here a few months ago and the views are stunning. I'd love to see you paint them.
Thanks Emma! Do you have any cities you'd recommend?
Such a fun day. Love your composition and color!
Yes it was! I was inspired by your color!

Thanks Paul! Most paintings take about two hours. The filming process slows things down a bit but I never go over 3 hours even when filming.

I tone the canvas with burnt sienna because I like when the bits of orange show through in the final painting. It also helps the paint go on easier.

Thanks! People have given me paints to try!

Thanks Edith! My go to color for turquoise or blue green is phthalo blue (green shade) from Utrecht. I mix with cad yellow medium 😊👍
Did you do any painting over in Europe with Emma? Looking forward to videos if so!
I did a few watercolors but mostly just filming for her
@@chamberlainpaintings It looked like a blast either way! Hope you had a good trip
I like the painting but I feel like that rock in the surf near the shore on the right is competing with the centre of attention.
