It's the guitarists Dad. He was a M60 gunner. Which they called the 🐓. The muzzle flash resembled a rooster tail so the VC went after them first to take them out
This song is about guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s father who served in Vietnam War. Lyrics tell the story of what Vietnam vets faced during and after the war. Great video to a great song.
Seelenwinter 666 not a popular war and it is not unreasonable to debate the war itself. To paint all Vietnam vets with the same brush is unfair and that mindset is why they were mistreated when they came back home.
Tahra Ludwig-Lane was the singer of the song but Jerry Cantrell’s father is the person whom the song is based on. I googled it up to make sure I was not mistaken. 👍
Check out: Them bones; Dam that river; Would?; Rain when I die; Nutshell: Again; Down in a hole; Grind; Check my brain; Man in a box; Sea of sorrow; I stay away
"No Excuses," "Smudge Factory," "Love, Hate, Love," "Bleed the Freak," did you say "Again?" Can't see above- video kinda overtly demonic but good song. "Dirt," "Brother," "The Killer is Me," "Got Me Wrong," "Over Now." "Stone" I like a lot, too, recorded several years after Layne's death when they regrouped with Jerry Cantrell taking lead (I know you probably know). I second your suggestions, too, love "Nutshell," "Grind," "Would," "I Stay Away," & "Sea of Sorrow...."
@Robert Lee That song starts off with a bang and doesn't stop! Layne's beginning vocals are something else! Well, all his vocals & Jerry Cantrell's talent is nothing to sneeze at either. Layne's vocals on "Love, Hate, Love" and "Nutshell" are chilling, especially live at The Moore or wherever it was for "Love, Hate, Love " and MTV Unolugged for Nutshell.
Jerry Cantrell, lead guitarist, wrote the majority of AIC songs, including Rooster, which was written about his father's experiences in the Vietnam War. The older man in this video is Cantrell's actual father. Jerry appears with his dad in several segments of this video. Cantrell is a genius song writer and lead guitarist.
My grandfather was one that never discussed his war stories/experiences as well- my grandma would always say, don’t asked him about that, he saw things that he will never forget and certainly doesn’t want to discuss - no war story times with him- I suppose all handle and cope differently- ❤️💛☮️💟✌️✨🇺🇸
John Ford My husband is a Vietnam Vet who also served in the Marines. All through our 40 years of marriage, he rarely heard anything about his experience. All I can say is, “ the little I heard didn’t come across positive” . Thanks for sharing!
My ex-husband served as well. He eventually talked about it and it was brutal! The saddest part of his story was how the boys were treated when they came home! Absolutely disgusting! It still brings tears to my eyes! I need to add that he and I are divorced only because of the lack of help for him from the VA! The red tape was insane and impossible to cut through at that time.
I suggest man in a box by this band as your next one. Also you really should give a listen to soundgarden, they are terrific, go with black days or the big hit of their day is black hole sun
Just pointing out, the frozen image next to this link, shows a picture from the video of a bloodied, Vietnamese and there you are, with a big grin. LOL Modern technology sets us up, everytime. LOL Love the channel...the music is just as good today as it was back in my day. God bless.
The "Rooster" character (played by James Elliott), was based on Alice in Chains' guitarist/vocalist, Jerry Cantrell's father (Jerry Cantrell Sr.), whose lifelong nickname was "Rooster." Cantrell Sr. served two combat tours in Vietnam, and also appears in the music video talking about his war experiences.
Maine Man Hi, thanks for your comment. I’m aware about why the song was written & what it’s about. I was merely stating that the name of the song was the nickname of Jerry’s father was given to him by Jerry’s grandfather in regards to his hairstyle that stuck up resembling a rooster . ✌🏻
Check out "Love Hate Love", also "Nutshell" from Mtv Unplugged... Their whole discography is full of hits... can't go wrong.... one of the top bands to come out of the 90s Seattle grung scene, along with Soundgarden, Pearljam and Nirvana... check all these groups out for a great time in music! Rooster is the old man's nickname in the video, which is Jerry Cantrell's (lead guitarist and secondary vocaliast) dad... in the beginning of the video it goes back and forth between Jerry and his dad taking about the war(Vietnam). The look in his eyes while talking about it tells the story more than words ever could... the memories of ut all obviously left their scars and had a traumatic effect on his psyche...
Very probably my favorite vocal performance of all time and all genres. Every...single...syllable is deliberate and loaded with intent and expression! A masterpiece if ever there was one. And yes, there's plenty more Alice in Chains to get lost in; enjoy the journey!
AIC was such a great group and I saw them live in 1994 and they sound live, just as well also. It's a damn shame we lost Layne so early on, but he did leave us his music to remember him by. I fell for anybody going through a drug problem, it's so frowned on, but every body will will have a friend or family member go thru this in there life time. RIP Layne. Also dude you do some great reactions also. I joined your station and have watched about 20 so far, always do enjoy seeing them.
My dad served the entirety of VN war. He came back a totally different person. He never talked about it, but he had nightmares and woke up in sweats. The horrors and pain of the war stayed w him until he found peace with God. I pray for our leaders to have wisdom and avoid anymore wars....
Jovaughn, such a powerful song. No body realized what these young men went through and if they survived and came back, they were treated like garbage. Such a sad hand they were dealt.
Yes, it's based on Jerry Cantrell's dad - their guitarist singer that was talking at the beginning of the vid. In the Vietnam War, his dad's codename was 'Rooster'.
@@kw2345 It was the nickname that Jerry cantrells granddad gave to his son. Apparantly he was a bit cocky and his hair would always stick up like a rooster.

Hi Jayvee! Hope you’re doing well. This is the first time hearing this artist. I definitely would like to hear more of his songs. Love his voice & the vibe. Thanks for sharing! 👌🤗💕
Thank you so much for doing more Alice in Chains Jayvee. Anything else from them is great. But... *Them Bones* (total kickass song *Don't Follow* (more mellow w/ harmonica RIP Layne ❤🙏
Alice In Chains is my 2nd favorite band behind Pantera and Jerry Cantrell was close close friends with DimeBag and Vinnie, Both bands had major success and tragedy and sadness with Dime and Layne but that voice of Laynes is haunting so sad how we lost both of them just imagine how many more great songs would have happened if both were still alive
Alice in Chains are one of the best. I even like their new stuff with the new singer. Oh if you like Layne's voice check his other band 'Mad Season'. They are amazing. Awesome reaction btw. Love your channel.
Alice In Chains is one of THE BEST bands of all time! Suggestions: Nutshell, Would, Man In the Box, Again, No Excuses, Bleed the Freak. Just SOooo many more.
Hey, near the end of Layne's social life, I guess, and performances, he was in a band of various band members that got together called Mad Season, their main song which Layne sings is called, "River of Deceit." Good one. Live at the - ugh - forgot, but it's the only one besides the weird video I think. Maybe good for one-hit wonder, 90s? Also, I love grunge, Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audio Slave "Show Me How to Live," great!, and Temple of the Dog). This last band was put together to honor a dead friend, drug OD I think, former roomie of Chris', and has Eddie Vedder and the musicians that would become Pearl Jam. I would think they would fit for "Hunger Strike" as a one-hit wonder. There were other songs but Mad Season and Temple of the Dog are known for those individual songs. Have a good one! Most men from previous wars don't.
