- Get a look at one of the best plants for hummingbirds: ORANGE CARPET® Hummingbird Trumpet (Epilobium canum). This showy, drought-tolerant perennial blooms in August, and it’s a magnet for hummingbirds! In this video, Horticulturalist Grace Johnson from Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms shares what makes this plant special. You’ll get a first-hand look at how much hummingbirds like this groundcover hummingbird trumpet -- from Colorado to California.
ORANGE CARPET® Hummingbird Trumpet is a Plant Select flower. Zones 3-8. Get details about this hummingbird plant and more at: plantselect.org/
Although a common name for epilobium canum is ‘California fuschia’ it’s actually got a much larger range than just on the serpentine soils of California, this subspecies can be found growing in Yellowstone even, and from what I’ve read, the original seed source from when this plant was brought into cultivation was from southern Idaho. I have a few of these in my yard and it definitely does get hummingbirds attention on their way south in the fall. It also hosts quite a few species of Lepidoptera(butterflies and moths) so helps providing food for songbirds rearing their young as well!
Wow great plant. You’re amazing!
Beautiful! This does not look like the shorter, creeping variety of Hummingbird Trumpet. I’m wondering how many plants make up the row that is shown. I’m also hoping you can you share mature height/spread of the plant shown.
This Orange carpet hummingbird trumpet is on a small hill. Over time this plant can grow 3-4 feet across, but in the 1-10 year period, it will only spread to about 2 feet.
