Maybe it's because we're European. Straight to the point, no waffle, no exaggeration, hyperbole. Excellent review as always. Chapeau Michael, chapeau

Basically, I think it's great of AP to give us one of the most important albums in great quality as 45 rpm. Since not everyone loves 45 rpm, I think it's great to make a 33 rpm as well, and then with the original cover.
But why does it have to be a UHQR with the expensive cardboard box at twice the price? Why does the original cover have to be in the box? Because a gatefold makes no sense? Does it always have to be a gatefold? I mean without a box with the original cover at the price of the 45 rpm would have been ok. Unfortunately, we are on the way to a situation where only high earners and the rich can afford audiophile records of this quality. Unfortunately, this fits in with the development of our society. But I don't want to rehash the price debate here. These are just the thoughts of an old man who has been buying records for 58 years.

Welcome to the 2020's where HYPE // FOMO // SHILLING BRANDS AND REVIEWERS can easily sell a £30 record for £125 with inconvenient packaging you dont want or need!
Consumers are still the biggest problem because too many fall for it which ruins it for the rest of us!

I have the new UHQR of LA Woman, a first pressing of it, and the 45 rpm version mastered by Doug Sax among other versions . The UHQR version is the best 33 1/3 rpm version that I've ever heard. Some people like the DCC 33 1/3 rpm version better, but I haven't heard that one. That could just be a mastering/mixing preference. Bernie Grundman got the UHQR right for my tastes. It's a must have for any big fan of The Doors. 👍👍👍👍👍

This release aimed solely at the 33 1/3 market.
In this upside down world we live in,it’s crazy that Analogue Productions already have a far superior sounding version at
    45 rpm $60 still in print .
    The new UHQR $125 .
Had the pleasure of comparing both when a friend brought the UHQR round to listen on my system.
To my ears day & night in favour of the 45 rpm .
From an audiophile point of view makes no sense.
Economically speaking the best sounding is $65 cheaper 🤔 Now if they had released the 33 rpm no UHQR at $40 it would have made perfect sense
A strange release from the magnificent Analogue Productions.

But if they released the 33rpm no UHQR they would have had to pay the same licensing fee and make halve the revenue. No-brainer to do it as an UHQR. And with the simpler box they even get down production cost.

What is even crazier that they reissued an already great 45 RPM version, of course I had to shell out the big bucks before it sold out, is that Rhino Hi FI is issuing a limited edition box set of the Doors next month. Guaranteed if you wait for a review before buying you will miss out as I did for ZZ Top. The Doors is sure to sell out even faster.

I have good or decent original US pressings of all the Doors records, but a few years ago, when all six AP 45rpm titles came back in stock at the same time, I put down my $360 and bought them all. They’re magnificent, every single one. I’m done buying Doors records.

A lot of people keep saying, the 45rpm is "superior", but it's not necessarily, and isn't a fair comparison anyway.. It's apples and oranges really, they're both completely different.
I have this new UHQR, the AP45 and an OG US Santa Maria pressing. There's things I like about the UHQR more than the 45rpm, and vice-versa. Overall, I think I like the UHQR the most, personally.. I need to spend more time with it, and compare things more, but so far it seems it's a more forward sounding, modern presentation, especially with's Jim's vocals and Robbie's guitars, which are more prominent in the mix. You can't go wrong with any of these though and I only got the UHQR since I'm a hardcore, lifelong, 2nd gen Doors fan, so I had to have it! Haha 😅
Looking forward to your shootout, Michael. 🍻

Great video Michael. I was very curious to get your take on this one. It has been a very divisive release for sure! Which is ironic, as in part the division is caused by the exceptional job Analogue Productions did on the 45rpm many years ago. Talk about “no good deed goes unpunished”!
Personally, when I judge this release I try to do so against the other 33’s - and I’m satisfied from what I’ve heard and read - that this is if not the definitive 33rpm - certainly close. So for that reason I think it’s a successful release and a fantastic addition to any Doors collection.
I will most definitely continue to play my 45rpm regularly, but my UHQR will get more spins. Without doubt.
You asked for opinions on whether we will get another Doors UHQR. Of course we can only speculate, but my guess is that we will. For three reasons - firstly, The Doors records still sell very well, secondly - Chad likes The Doors and thirdly, Chad has historical access to excellent sources for a UHQR.
Strange Days is a good prediction as you have said - or perhaps Morrison Hotel. Personally I would try to buy any Doors UHQR released.
Thanks again for an interesting video.

  • @LetThereBeSound1
    @LetThereBeSound1 Месяц назад +2

This whole video can basically be distilled into the following simpleton statement:
"The OG is brighter. UHQR is less bright. I prefer it a little less brighter therefore the UHQR is better."
    Wait, what?
Incidentally I don't know what is this "blackness" you are talking about as the Clarity Vinyl formulation
continues to be quite noisy even after an ultrasonic wash. Not so obvious once the music is blasting
but absolutely noticeable in between tracks and in the lead-in and loud-out grooves.
And lastly, I think it sloppy of you to declare the LA Woman UHQR undisputed "best 33" based upon a
    sample of exactly TWO pressings.
You should get a hold of the Bernie cut from 2009 for Rhino, or better yet, the Steve Hoffman DCC cut
from 1998 (amongst others). Then and only then you opine which is "the best"
    Respectfully,

My take is that there's already how many reissues of L.A. Woman? I used to respect UHQR releases, but lately it seems like they're becoming more of a gimmick, especially at the price. I listened to a friends copy of this, while it sounds good, it doesn't "WOW" me the way other UHQR's have in the past. I wouldn't feel this way if it was just a regular reissued LP for $30-40 bucks. UHQR has a good legacy, so i'm disappointed on the diminishing returns and obvious cash grab.

    • @austinhunt4260

I'm not saying all UHQRs become the definitive pressings, but easily half of the 20 extant UHQRs seem to be. Miles, Trane, Jimi, Dan, Stripes, Marley (all of which I've heard). I think almost all of the 20 might be definitive. I recall there was a Dan UHQR that everyone seemed to hate. Maybe one or two others were misses. But that's an incredible rate of success. Hard to argue the UHQR line is "gimmicky" when so many of them seem to become the definitive pressing.

For me its not even the 2nd best Analogue Productions issue of this classic. The SACD takes that cake! I didnt get into vinyl for convenience and with the preferable mastering to my tastes thats why the 45rpm trumps the UHQR. I wish it didnt because the UHQR cost over double (eh!?) the two record set! For me the getting up to turn over a side isnt even an issue. Only with long song sided prog and concept albums does 45rpm make no sense and indeed AP Lamb Lies Down on Broadway remains just stupid. But here the side length is an issue with the 33 UHQR and it simply doesnt breathe and relax like the 45rpm imho. I hope someone who truly hates flipping sides and doesnt care about saving money buys my 33 UHQR 😂
