- Here we are reviewing and comparing heavy duty industrial manual riveting tools as well as a quick section about Molly bolt tools and a discussion comparison of high quality versus low quality rivets.
Astro 1426, Stanley MR55, Craftsman 9-74755, Elgen HP-2, Bostik K110, Huck HK-150A . .
Thanks for that detailed video with tips on methods and I ran into an issue with the 1/4" D blind rivets while trying to pass the metal shank threw the hole of the rivet tool. I will need to drill out a very small fraction of the mandral, so it will pass threw. I suspect that there was an issue in manufacture and the opening was not wide enough and I'm guessing that happened because of the mandral being manufactured in a vise, which squeezed it, while the hole was formed. Yes, over the years, I've ran into all of the things you mentioned, so I had to find ways to make the rivets work in confined spaces, on some occasions, so in one case, I used a quality vise grip plyers, tightened it as much as I could, then put a cats paw or prybar under it, so I could pull the shank back up towards me, which actually worked! A few close calls though since I almost punched myself in the face by pulling on it. LOL! Please make a video on offset rivet guns since I'd consider those too and I've seen a few different brands on e bay, Amazon, already. Five stars for communication and great that there's no distracting back ground music or worse, blasting music with no communication .

Yeah that was a gold nugget right there! I never knew there was so much to rivets, this video is fantastic. Only problem is I'm in Ireland so trying to work out what the equivalent of a decent rivet gun is over here.
When I was working in industry, we had a tool that could install a threaded insert into sheet metal ( usually stainless) . If I remember correctly, it was called a “carcert” , and was effective. It worked similar to a common riveter, but left behind a threaded hole.
Threaded inserts are common and the little hydraulic Riveter I have has a special adapter for installing those there is also manual screw-type installers for those

I never thought about reversing the rivet to allow the button to be on the other side. Nice review, very comprehensive. Most professionals I know use pneumatic riveters, trying to hand rivet all day would be a pain.

You did a nice fairly complete explanation. I've been assembling experimental aircraft for decades. I have different riveters but the one I always fall back on is the first one you showed, the pop rivet gun. After many thousands of rivets and nearly 35 years the spring finally broke. I find all other guns require two hands to push completely open, get started and sometimes too ratchet. You never really showed the Elgin that you are high praising with its Handles open. Or demonstrated it. And I never had one like the first gun. It's all one-handed. You can reach for a rivet while you're Poppin it open and ejecting with one hand with the other shoving the new rivet in and keep on going. I can blow through a 100 rivets in about 30 min. With the other hand riveters it could take up to 90 min or more.
You said you relied on the first pop gun (which would be the one without a nose), but also said you never had "one like the first gun." In the 2nd case, did you mean the molly bolt remover which shouldn't be in the video since they aren't about rivets?

I did just get a MARSON Aluminum thread-sert kit, Aluminum was suggested, I will add some steel inserts, it's easy to use, I've used it 6 times already

I just upgraded from a cheap no name riveter to a lobster riveter which seem to be a very high quality and well made.
Lobster are hands down the best. Little harder to squeeze but only 1 squeeze

Thank you for sharing this knowledge. Quick question, is there a material rule? i.e. if you are joining two pieces of steel, use a steel rivet? If aluminum use an aluminum rivet?

If you want to spend the $ for it, the best hand riveter you can buy is the Malco 2 in 1. As the name suggests you can change the bolt pivot point for more power (good for stainless rivets) or fewer pulls (aluminum/copper rivets). Adjustable jaw tension and can be fully disassembled to remove jams. Jaws are also replaceable when they wear out, which will take many thousands of even stainless steel rivets.

Hi I haven’t any hand strength anymore! Is there a battery operated one you would suggest? I’m making a window well cover, I’m using greenhouse acrylic/plastic with aluminum bars. My ex-husband measured the thickness & said I need 3/8 to 1/2 in rivets to go through. I know you drill but when I looked up the Huck to see the cost it only goes through 1/4 inch. I’d there any battery tool you could suggest. Thank You
I have one of the hydraulic type riveting tool but it needs oil in it. You mentioned that it can be finicky to add oil. Would it be possible to explain where to add and how much oil they take?

Which rivet would you recommend to use on an aluminum boat. Not sùe what gauge. But I'd like it to be solid and covered in 5200 adhesive. Previous owner drill dry wall screws from the inside of the boat to out to mount a rack 4 holes below the water line of course. Solid rivet ? Thanks
Nice post sir, I have an old MARSON, looks like your green handle pair. It's a HP2 over 40 years old. And a workout with a hand full of rivets, really any more than a couple, good hand exercise.
Yes very true the hydraulic riveters and the bolt cutter style riveters are much easier to use if you have to drive any more than a couple dozen rivets or if you're working with a larger rivet sizes
I Also have a Marson, in a nice blow molded case. For both steel or aluminum rivets it is my go-to. It's from the late 80's, and has krinkle powder coating. I do have a pop-rivet set, but never use it.
For the longest time, I used a Craftsman swivel-head riveting tool and absolutely hated it. No matter what quality of rivets I used or how I treated them, they always came out sloppy. I ended up buying that Pittsburgh two-handed one and had an infinitely easier time getting perfect pops, albeit it's harder to hold for certain projects.
Yes the big riveters are very effective however hydraulic riveters are unbeatable the power of the long handle and being able to use it with one hand
I have hundreds of rivets. The packages always identify the rivet by it's length, followed by the clamping range.

The huck hydraulic Riveter includes a nut setter nosepiece I forgot to mention that it's one nice advantage to it is it will both rivet and nut set. She just have to buy the special little nuts at and the little specialty pull adapter to he is with the hydraulic crimper

Hydraulic if you can get it just because if you have to install a lot of rivets you want as much leverage as possible
We used big ones on railroad called hucks check them out not 4 homeowner awsum tool

I like that you speak of quality rivets, but are measuring the rivets with a Harbor Freight caliper lol, Cannibal lol. Good video though, learned alot.
There is no difference in quality between recycled aluminum and what you called 'virgin' aluminum.
Recycled metals aren't like recycled paper or plastic.
The HF rivets are just thinner. That's why they don't deform as nicely.
So all aluminum is the same? All rivets are made of the same alloy? What alloy is a pop rivet?
@@836dmar You're right that there are many different aluminum alloys out there. The alloy could be different between brands. But recycled aluminum is identical to newly mined aluminum. Recycled aluminum can be alloyed in exactly the same ways that newly mined aluminum can. There's zero degradation in quality from recycling aluminum, so whether a rivet comes from recycled aluminum is not a factor in its quality.
Arrow rht300 or marson hp2 for everyday use at work?
Air Riveters are easiest to use, I think the Marson is better quality.

Yes they are excellent for Sheet Metal and you can put an additional washer on the back side for extra holding power

Just use a drill bit that is at least the same diameter (or larger) of the hole the rivet is in. If you used a 1/2" bit to drill the hole. You can use a 1/2" or larger bit to drill the head off. Once you do it once you will smack your forehead because its so darn easy. You just need to destroy the metal between the head and the stem. Once the head is separated from the stem, the stem will simply slide out of the hole. You do not need to drill the entire stem out. Which is what I always assumed. You simply need to break the head off. Drilling my first rivet was life changing. I love rivets now. Nuts and bolts are stupid lol.

18:58 Don't know why I watched this again, but really... do you remember the dimensions all the adjustment nuts on your tools?! Don't even try to tell me you're good enough to judge millimeter sizes by feel.
When you turn wrenches as much as i have i can tell you that i can identify nuts and bolt sizes by just looking at them. I can even tell if its a metric or standard bolt size.
@@gradoisx2348 sorry don't believe that... most guys who say they can are either good guessers or familiar with the product they're working on. If you swap something out with different bolts/nuts they completely fair.
@@xephael3485 you dont have to believe it. But just because you cant do it doesnt mean its not possible. I can literaly feel a bolt without seeing it and tell you exactly what size it is. So your telling me people cant type on a computer without seeing the keyboard? Are they just good at geussing too? No its muscle memory so if your brain can memorize a movement in 3 dimensional space it can certainly memorize sizes by feel or sight.

@@xephael3485 yup sure can. Go grab a 17mm socket and a 16mm. You must be blind if you cant tell the diffence in bolt size by eye.
Buy the cast stanley with swevel head n4 size dies thoese are junk i should hav made vid i use these every day but he tried hard
Just my opinion man..but if you have tools you should probably have the consumables they use! If you don't, might as well get rid of the tool.
I just didn't have any Molly bolts for the video. But I'll definitely be keeping these tools because they make it so easy to install when I do work with Molly bolts.
I didn't even know that tool existed. I thought you could just tighten the screw to spread the legs. No tool needed.
