Great video! I need to get back to learning CW! You would think with this quarantine thing I would be an ace at it by now!
Go for it! Thanks for watching!
Just bought this and can't wait to dig in. Thanks for the video!
Hope you enjoy it!
i was a radioman in the Navy, haven't done code since 1974, just ordered the 557
Nice. I enjoy that key. My Padawans at school are enjoying using it as they learn cw now as well. Thanks for watching
I have been using the 557 for a couple of weeks now paired with a free decoding app on the Iphone. The Only trouble I had was the contacts were not making a flush contact, which caused an unclear signal at times. squealing, static like noise. I bent the arm by hand to make the contacts flush with one another and problem solved. I tried a few decoders they all need a crisp clear signal and little or no back ground noise.
Wow!!!!! That is just amazing. Thank you so much for showing this video. I have been looking for a way to learn code. I have downloaded apps, but that didn't work. This way you can learn to send and read code. If I remember,ARRL sends code at different speeds on the radio on certain nights. This way you can practice to receive by double checking with the decoder as you copy. I think they start off sending 5 WPM. Anyway, again thank you so much. Have to check out the link to see what the total cost will be. If I can finally get code down, my Dad will be a very happy man. He tried teaching me code when I was like 9 or 10. Never got it down. Now 60. Lol. Never to old to learn anything new. 73's. Clark KG7LOI.
Go for it! You will do great! The combo works really well together to check your sending! Thanks for watching, 73!
I'm a new ham and just beginning to learn CW....might you have a link for a practice paddle? I'm thinking about starting off on a paddle instead of a straight key or Iambic. .......OR should I just buy a paddle which I'll be able to use on the air? If I do this, is there a practice mode so that I can hear it but not go out? I have an IC7300 and am loving Phone and FT8 but now ready to jump into CW. Thanks for the video :)
This is the paddle I have. amzn.to/2U9f1m1 I initially used the practice paddle that was in the video, but graduated up to the MFJ. I did a review on it not long ago. It is a solid paddle, and I like it. I don't have a 7300 yet, I am planning on getting one for my school club when I get the funds, but I am sure you can use the paddle to practice with as well. On my Kenwood, I simply turn off the 'break in' and I can use it to practice my cw without transmitting. Thanks for watching, and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions! 73
@@K5ATA Thank you...I'll check it out.
@@K5ATA Can your better paddle or practice paddle be connected to the 557 for its practice tone? And what is the pracitice paddle you show in the video?
Turn up the volume on the 557 & adjust the sound freq to trip the reader. Then if necessary adjust the reader sensitivity.
Thanks for the tip!
I have the MFJ-557 but may buy the 461 after watching your video. Have you tried connecting a cable from the audio out on the 557 to audio in on the 461? I wonder if that would even work? Thanks for the video!
I will give that a shot and see how it works... I works well without a cable once you get it adjusted correctly. I really like it, I am anxious to see how it does with the kids at school. Thanks for watching, Dan. 73
You just saved me some money. Thank you!
How is that?
@@paraiskaparaiskai4762 I was going to buy this but after hearing what it sounds like I'll pass
Ha! Got a kick out of the chat last night. I think ham radio and the shooting sports go hand and hand...or the right to bare arms and the right to free speech.
I agree, some hobbies tend to go together well, like these two. Thanks for watching!
Is there some reason to use this over a dummy load on your radio if you already have one?
You mean for CW practice? You can also turn break in off on many radios and practice that way. I use these keys for the Padawans to learn. They are fun to play with on the go as well. If you have a key/paddle already, you can certainly use it with your radio to practice with. Thanks for watching!
@@K5ATA yes for CW practice. If I turn break in off the ft-891 doesn’t make a tone so I just leave it on at 5 watts into a dummy load. Just asking to make sure I wasn’t missing a feature other than portability.
@@forgetyourlife Ahhh... I'm not a Yaesu guy (too many dead Yaesus in the shack) so I've not used an 891. Yeah, just use a dummy load and 5 watts should work fine. The practice key is pretty slick though. :) You could use a Cricket build like we did on Ham Radio Crash Course recently... plus you get to build a fun little radio :)
Thanks for the demo I can't get my 461 to work. MFJ has no reasonable instructional material/video for the decoder.
Thank you! RWB
