The fact that he and Marino were the only QBs to throw for 50k at that point makes it such an accomplishment. Now pedestrian QBs can do that in a career.

    • @lendrury2771

Agree . Guys are throwing 35 45 times a game with a running attack being secondary and so we have guys like kirk cousins throwing for big numbers
If elway played in today's NFL that 50 thousand yards would be over 60 thousand

One of the best QBs in the history of the NFL, no matter what others could say or think. You have to accept the fact that he was a QB out of this world.., "King of comeback", NFL records in many departments, Two Super Bowls, and not to mention that he's one of a few QBs with a "back to back" winning the SB..., come on, just be fair and give the man the recognition and respect he deserves. JOHN ELWAY..., one of the best ever....!

    • @15Jeep

I completely agree.....but there is a new sheriff in town.....a QB in the Show Me state and his name is Patrick Mahomes! It certainly appears Mahomes and the Chiefs are going to 'show' everyone for years to come. John Unitas was the First GOAT. John Elway was the Second GOAT. We are all now watching the Third GOAT.....Patrick Mahomes redefine the QB position! These three QBs and to name a few others (there's more)....Fran Tarkenton, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees were all better QBs than Tom Brady.
I am NOT a Brady hater. Tom Brady was just in the right place at the right time with probably the best coaches and superb scouts to keep the Patriots competitive for many years. Granted, Brady had a very good arm and read defenses well. However, Brady was fortunate and benefited in so many ways compared to other QBs. Brady had several above average players and a few great players on both sides of the ball every year. There were little to no weaknesses in any position on those Patriot teams.
Brady rarely got sacked and NEVER had to scramble more than a ridiculously low number of times. Although this is impossible.....put Tom Brady on the 1984 - 1989 Denver Broncos teams. He would have been forced to scramble and make numerous difficult plays. Brady would have had a high number of sacks during his career and his QB numbers would have been much lower than many QBs of other teams. The QB position is MORE THAN the game, season and career statistics.....much more. Simply put, Tom Brady is not the greatest QB in NFL history.
There are at least 12 to 15 former NFL QBs that played the position better than Tom Brady. The Patriots had two LUCKY Super Bowl wins. The Patriots should have lost both games. Finally, don't forget...Tom Brady was good and the Patriots had great overall teams, but lost TWO (2) Super Bowls to Eli Manning and the Giants.

I'm a lifelong Bills fan but John Elway was probably my favorite NFL player who didnt play in Buffalo other than Reggie White. I've watched #7 pull off incredible 4th quarter comebacks SO MANY TIMES. Elway almost singlehandedly took Denver to 3 Super Bowls between 1986-89 and finally won a pair of Super Bowls in 1997-98 when the Broncos finally got him some help at the skill positions on offense. Couldn't believe Shannon Sharpe got snubbed from the NFL 100 All Time Team. Andre Reed and Steve Tasker should've made it too from the Bills

This highlight is missing one of the best throws Elway ever made in a game which happened in a game against the Seahawks in Denver. Elway rolled right out of the pocket and running fast to evade defenders.....threw the ball across the grain 60 yards down the field...a perfect strike to Steve Watson.

  • @djmattese
    @djmattese 2 года назад +2

So many great things about The Duke. One thing not mentioned much but was the best I ever saw was his pocket presence. He could be standing there, than move forward or side to side or backward in a split second avoiding a sack or tackle, like he had eyes in the back, side and front of his head!
He won back to back Super Bowls at 37-38, retiring as the Super Bowl MVP.
My friends say he only won because he had great talent around him and great coaching. So replace Montana, Brady, Bradshaw, and any other quarterback that won because they had great talent and coaching around them with Elway, in their primes. He’d have won 10 championships. Take any of those Legends and put them on the teams Elway dragged to the Super Bowl with little talent and coaching, and they would have never even been in a Super Bowl.
Elway best ever, the eyes and stats tell you that.
Bill Walsh wanted to trade Joe Montana for Elway, after Montana, in his early prime won a Super Bowl. He was licking his chops thinking what he could do with a talent like Elway. Montana was great, but Elway? Next level.
Watching Elway was a religious experience, and indeed it was. Proof? Ask the many that experienced first hand the Elway cross.

I have seven names for you. Of course, there are other names that I won't mention that I'm sure other people will. But listen to these seven : Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Troy Aikman, Roger Staubach, and of course John Elway. Naturally, as a long time Dallas Cowboys supporter, I normally would go with Roger and Troy. But not this time, because this is Elway we're talking about. And Elway is often the trivia answer to the question, " If you have the ball with five or six minutes left in the game, with only one timeout left, and you start with the ball on your own twenty yard line, with eighty yards to go and your team is down by five points, which one of those seven QB's I mentioned above would you like to have the most to come through for you and win with the game on the line ? Just hand the ball to Elway and let him do his thing by taking Denver down the field to win the game in the last five or six minutes. That was Elway's specialty- he thrived on the game resting on his shoulders and it all comes down to him having to make that last drive to help his team pull the game out. So, I will take Elway over those other six guys. Would you ?

I was on a job(Ironworker) in Los Angeleez and used a Sunday off to attend a Bronco game at the Coliseum; twas the 1987 season, November.
Arrived a tad late. Ticket cost $35 from a Scalper anxious to minimize his losses_ arena was only two-thirds of the 100k capacity. As usual, the mass in LA at home recovering!
In the stands there was peculiar quiet, especially hushed when Elway under center. Myself, between plays I keep busied with the Raider cheerleaders (Woaha!), the Fights on the landings across the way, and reminding self to mind my P's & Q's_ didn't want to get beat-up.
A woman behind me echoed the seemed sentiments of the whole crowd: "what is he(Elway) gonna do next!"
Well, none-too-soon Elway unloads a 49 yard rope, and be danged, in a quieted stadium we hear air being pushed aside by a football ordering a path to its target. Afterward, gasps abound!
Denver wins 23-17. I escape unscathed.

One thing nobody mentions when talking about Elway, nobody talks about the interceptions. He's one of the greats I agree, but this guy was an interception machine. 300 tds to 226 int career stats. His interception to td ratio is worse than Brett Farves. I like Elway, just find it strange nobody ever talks about that.

if anything he sure made every game exciting, even if they were down you didn't leave or if watching on tv turn it off because you had to see if he could do it again in the fourth. strongest arm ever in NFL some like Cunningham and few others could throw further but the ball didn't hit the receiver with the same force. these days announcers talk about what teams have to do to win, they'll say this or that or stop the run or pass, when a any team played the Broncos the analysis was always the same, STOP ELWAY, only in those days stopping ment knock his ass out of the game, the saints got busted for head hunting not too long ago,...but back then it was a no brainer, they were coming to hurt you and put you out of the game, ELWAY, Marino , Montana were all targets and dream trophy for all line backers, I remember watching games where elway went down like a rag doll and still got up and threw a dagger down field on the next play, there were no take it easy on the qb rules back then, so when comparing statistics and qb greats you have to take that In to consideration , elway was branded as the spoiled California kid that defenses were eager to give a brutal welcome to the NFL, he had a lot to overcome and to prove, while Tom Brady may be the greatest ever and had to overcome being passed up it may have helped him avoid being such a target, he's gotten to enjoy the being a target late In his career, while elway had to endure it from day one.

Should have included the 54 yard cross field pass to Vance Johnson in sb 21 and the 56 yard opening td pass to Ricky Nattiel in sb 22 , after all his claim to elite status is that he carried teams so whats wrong with including losses to better teams ?

Not just better teams, the 3 of the best teams those franchises ever fielded. Those Foreskins and Niners teams were the 2nd best and that Giants team was their best all time. Broncos suffered blowout losses to those teams bc they were all fully stacked and the Broncos only got there because of Elway and Mecklenburg
