    Even though my CD player is a separate, this video gave me the confidence to take off the housing and replace the O ring with some cheap 30mm rings from Amazon and were now in business. The old O ring was stretched, and a 20 yr old Rotel RCD 02 now working perfectly. Thankyou!

    My Dad who passed away a few years back has an old - as in OLD - RCA bookshelf stereo I got from the garage where he hung out. I’m keeping it just bc it’s sentimental. I’m not gonna say I’ve actually fixed it after watching this bc I haven’t even opened it yet, lol. I just wanted to say what a pleasant video this is to watch. Even if it isn’t the band (I’ll find out tonight), I got to thinking, I have a 7 y/o son who has gone thru at least 5 of those cheap DVD players over the past few years. I’m sitting here kicking my own butt bc it’s the exact same concept 🙄 … the problem w RUclips and I is that it’s always after I junk something I think to look on here but I’m learning the hard way🤣. I just wanted to compliment you on video (the first one I’ve seen) and I’m gonna go ahead and sub bc there’s probably 10+ (at least) you’ve explained I need help with! Thank you and I’ll let you know about the RCA, lol!
    Edit: If you even see this since this video is 4 years old!😁

      Yes, definitely try to fix it. You'd be surprised how many times it's just the rubber o-rings that break. And I know about sentimental value of stuff and It would be a pretty cool thing to keep around. Who knows maybe one day your dad's voice might come through on the speakers. If you believe in that kind of stuff, I sure do.

    Thanks for the info. Great instructions. I have this same model and came looking for tips to fix my stuck CD tray door. You got me inside the unit but it turned out to be a too stiff spring. The band, after 30 years is still fine, no slipping. After a little troubleshooting it turns out the tray will open and close if I leave the spring off. If I leave the spring on and try and play a CD I get an error message. If I leave the spring off the CD will play. Just going to leave the spring off for now and see if it will last. Just posting in case anyone else has the same problem. Your video got me to the point I could figure this out so Thanks.

      @@HowtowithPaulHenderson can't believe I'm having this issue. Write now. I wish it wasn't so like that song from the 80's I wish it wasn't so🤷🏼‍♂️, you see that's why I'm thankful, for USB ports, cos you don't have problems, well at least I hope you don't have problems with USB, not being read by the memory chip USB where you insert it in the stereo USB port, or whatever it is that reads the music, when it plays it in the stereo. You'll see I'm kind of annoyed because I can't get my CDs out of my Vivid stereo from aldi🙄☹️. Cds never thought cd trays, can be so dam annoying. Makes me also mad because I had to go out and buy a new old fat PS2. Which I really didn't want to because I was happy with my slim PS2 but that decided to stop working to. So I had a crack at that but that's had it's days and seeing that it was from EB Games and pre-owned sony PlayStation. I guess nothing is built to last forever.

You're probably a experienced technician guy. And saying that I like to play, most of my music off the USB flash drive stick. My option is I don't want to break 💔 it, just to retrieve Nick Skitz 50 & Nick Skitz 51 cds I know it's tempting but fate of breaking my Stero is at a bigger cost, cheers and thanks for replying Paul Henderson ✌🏾🙂👋🏾.

    The same problem I'm having with a used AMC CD-6 CD Player in good condition from ebay! I thought it was in good condition. I opened it up, the belt is actually in place, and in good condition. I still have the same problem; the CD Tray tries to open outward, but cannot! There is only this one short white post whereby the railing of CD Tray rides on, but no other short post on the other side of the CD Tray. Not certain if that missing short post makes any difference. Anyway, now I am going to watch this repair. Thank you very much for posting this dilemma.🔉🎼🎵🎶

Not sure if my stereos are worth saving but since they dont work now AND I know someone who needs/wants a CD player (my AIWA units ARE overkill for them) and I had two models sitting around .. .I figured may as well try to fix them. I am sure the cassette deck belts need replacing too.
    I hear the motor for the disc changer TRYING to move it, but the belt probably went bad .. .I am in a HIGH humidity environment here and i'd not be shocked if the belts "turned to glue"

    I have a 5-CD stereo. I haven't used it in 5 years because of this issue but, I think it's a Phillips. It has 5 very thin CD trays stacked on top of each other. It also plays MP3 CD's. One morning, I was trying to play the CD in the last Pink Floyd album but, couldn't tell which was the CD and which was the DVD and put the DVD into the stereo, closed the drive and it's been stuck in there ever since!! None of the drives will open and the disc will not come out. The stereo keeps trying to play it but can't figure out how! I tried pulling the plug and then hitting the eject immediately after plugging it in. I tried taking it apart to get the disc out of the tray but it uses special tools so, I can't access the trays. How do I get that disc out of the drive so I can use the stereo again AND watch the DVD at some point?

      @HowtowithPaulHenderson  Год назад

      That's strange... it plays 1&3 though but not 2.... I don't have any answer for that. Unless the rubber band is too tight or too loose. It should be snug but not too tight. Or too loose too as if you pull on the old ring and it doesn't move the pulleys then it's too loose. I just replaced my rubber o ring a few days ago when I was setting up my new computer system. I missed playing my CDs from the 80s and 90s and early 2000s.
      I had the unit in a tight spot so it was hard to get to to remove it. After installing my new computer system I ended up moving it to another location and now it's much easier to get to.

      All I can say is to remove the outer cover of the unit and watch it go through the cycle of trying to open and close, maybe a band is loose or a tooth is broke on one of the cog wheels or something is getting hung up somewhere inside between where the CD sits. I hope this helps.

Maybe it's a similar situation where one of the bands are broke or it's just stuck because it's out of whack. If you don't see anything broke the only thing I can suggest is trying to find a TV /video repair shop in your area. I know there are some still out there, they're just hard to find. Yes I wouldn't want to get rid of it either.

    Great video, thank you very much! I have a question about a problem I have its been a while though:
    I have a Sony HCD-RG22 I currently use as a stereo for my computer and its been a few years that whenever I turn it on I can hear the CD tray rotating for about 30 seconds untill it stops, if I press the open button while its doing that, it will display "opening", but wont open, the open button does nothing as soon as the tray stops rotating, luckily there are no CDs in the tray... I wonder if it could also be this same rubber band problem.
    The interior is very dusty, to the point the tape motors are slow due to dust accumulation, the radio used to belong to a person who didnt took great care of it. Could that be a problem when opening it to repair? Could I clean it with compressed air much like a PC? Or should I just leave it as it is to avoid any problems? I've got some experience fixing electronics like PCs, landline phones and kitchen appliances, this one I'd rather bring to a specialized shop just in case, unfortunately there are none near where I live..
    Appreciate the video and any info if possible, thank you!

      It's hard to say without seeing it. As long as you didn't get it out of alignment. The first time I tried to fix it I got it out of whack so it wouldn't close at all. You might be able to turn some of the sprockets inside to get it to close. On mine I just have to force it closed the last inch so it snaps back in place.... Sometimes there's a lover that needs to be pushed out of the way, like I said it's really hard to know what's wrong if I can't see it. But if it was aligned and close when you started something just got out of whack. Just keep playing with it you should be able to get it back in.

    Hi Paul, Hope you're still active here as Mr. fixit. I'm in Raleigh/Durham NC. Have Sony MHC gx450 mini system w/MECHA ERROR. Replaced drawer belt underneath - fixed. This time no luck. Found Tray belt under CD platter very loose, Put it back on but didn't fix it. Will replace, but suspect something additional. CD spinner doesn't lift to operating position so CD doesn't rotate, and the tray on which rest of CDs sit doesn't rotate compete 360 deg. I hand-spin the tray and it runs up against a stop, but doesn't lock in place. The spindle appears to be gear-driven, no belts.
    I love this device and also fixing things but can't pin this bug down. Any ideas? Or can you recommend a capable local shop to visit? Hey, I can use Zoom if possible. Will compensate generously for any help you can provide.

      So I just checked the tray, you can barely hear it open, I did order different o-rings from Amazon last year or so ago for the tray mechanism, so maybe that is making the tray quieter during the opening.
      I didn't use lapel mics for my videos back then, I was using a mic gun and it was picking up the sound of the tray opening since the mic was pointed directly at me. I hope these new o-rings last longer than the previous ones I had used.

      I think this what happened to me when my CD changer first broke. my first attempt with trying to fix this player. The first time the band broke I didn't really know what to do so I forced the tray open with a butter knife I took out the CD thinking the CD had a bounced off somehow and jammed the door closed. So when I went to close it it wouldn't close all the way. I'm not saying this is what your problem is but this is what I did to close it. Took my palm on the center of the door tray and pushed it shut and it snapped back in place. A short time after that was when I decided to take it apart find out how it works and what was broke on it and that's when I found out the band was broke and I fixed it and I found out why when I forced the door open why it wouldn't close properly. If I remember correctly at the back of the CD tray there's a plastic lever that locks the tray in place and when you press the open button it releases that lever in the tray opens up and then when you close the tray it moves out of the way then it locks the tray back in place.

    • @HowtowithPaulHenderson
      @HowtowithPaulHenderson  3 года назад

      The first time that the o-ring broke, I didn't know that's what was wrong with the CD tray. It was making noises and could not be opened from the outside, I used a small plastic pry bar that didn't work so I had smacked it really hard a few time thinking that a CD popped out of its tray and this would knock it back in place, but it didn't work. So when I took the cover off to get inside I could see that it was the o-ring and not a loose CD.
      The reason your the tray is stuck is because the O-ring turns some plastic gears and a release lever to allow the tray to slide open. once the cover is off try turning the pulley manually that the O-ring would have been attached to, if you have a rubber band you can use that to help turn the pulley and it should open up.

    It is very good of you to share this, but for your "safety" - those things have much "radiation" and "lazers" inside of them, and yet you are going inside of it with absolutely no protection or protective wristbands or anything, and left the power on too. How do you not worry about this danger?!!! I am baffled.

    • @HowtowithPaulHenderson

      I wasn't worried, the laser that reads the CD wasn't pointing up at me, plus I didn't play any music so I'm sure the laser wasn't even activated.... Sure the dentist x-rays give off a hell of a lot more than this little machine does.
