There is another angle to this to an extent. The truth is, most people would just junk a broken six year old computer. But the xps-es, the macs, the vaios (of yesteryear), the precisions, the thinkpads, the latitudes, yeah. Those are expensive and often liked by their owners. If something breaks, they seek service, because they like the machine.
Point is the fact that these high end machines get serviced more often, has a huge bias in it, where to have a computer serviced by a tech, the owner has to feel, the device is worth bothering the time and effort to have it serviced, both in cost, and the huge inconvenience of not having a computer for a week.

Surely device price makes a huge role in this (and the cult following in the case of apple). I may have liked my old Xiaomi phone that I bought for 300$, but when it's screen broke I was simply not willing to pay half of the devices initial price (and pretty much the same amount of money I would spend to buy a used one) to repair the screen.
But if I spent 800$ for an iphone I would have 100% tried to fix it, even if just to sell it easily afterwards.
Nowadays I'm a pixel 6 user and fix my stuff myself and I couldn't have been happier, since I don't have to deal with buying bootleg parts or "oem calibration softwares".

Yeah. I always go aftermarket whenever any part of my car needs to be replaced.
OEM parts are high cost for lowest passable quality. Aftermarket parts from reputable brands use higher quality materials, have better quality control, and sometimes have even fixed engineering errors that caused the problems in the first place. And at the same time, they're usually less expensive than OEM, especially if you buy OEM via a certified mechanic/dealer.

Life has a lot of shit, but if you can find the laugh or smile in the shit enough of the time, your life will become the type of life where you literally can't stay asleep when your eyes open in the morning. You'll never go back to bed when your eyes first open as you roll over, even if it's 4:30 AM! because you won't want to spend a *single second* you could spend _living_ & _enjoying_ it all knocked out or in bed.

@@rossmanngroup I think you might be right about your shift in happiness maybe being more due to no longer having to work on Apple products than moving to Texas.
When you take so much pride in the quality of your work and keep having to butt heads against a company's lack of ethics and the customers who ignorantly support them, I can see why that would eventually take a toll on your happiness and fulfillment. Nobody likes their best efforts to feel futile.
Also, when I was talking to my psych friend about Autism back when I was trying to self-diagnose, she told me that a common trait was an unyielding sense of justice/injustice. If there's one thing I think that everyone in here can all agree on, it's that you really really really fucking hate injustice - especially the kind enacted against the little guy by corporations!

I had a Deere riding mower. I knew the exact part I needed to repair it. The "official" shop ordered it and sent the wrong part. Turns out that due to a law in Cali, they had to change filter configurations and now the ONLY OEM part they make and can sell is designed to fit the Cali-model.
I told the repair shop there was no way this part would last, the bends would put too much stress. "Oh, we would have heard of complaints by now" (or close to that.) Sure enough, the second time I tried cutting the grass the part split and I smelled fuel.

I wouldn't say shitty, I would just say "purposely flawed". I have a 2016 Macbook which is probably one of the most retarded macbooks ever made, no magnetic charging, just 2 USB-C ports and a headphone jack, the problems it's "developed" after years of use are quite stupid, however there's still loads of things it excels at.
Apple don't put much thought into longevity - for example I have a Dell E6410, it looked "okay" when it was new, it still looks "okay" 13+ years later, with some wear. Apple products on the other hand look "amazing" on day one, like they really wow and stun you, the whole unboxing and "new product" feel is amazing, but the aging process isn't always graceful, unless you take extra good care of the product.
The problem with Apple stuff is... okay, if you're gonna give me something snazzy yet expensive, which has a bunch of user wear parts, at least let it be somewhat repairable? but Apple of course says no.

I stopped putting in the 1480 into the 2012. I put in the 2009-2010 part and I tuck in the extra ribbon cable length between the motherboard and the optical drive. Out of 30 I put in, 1 broke.
ALL 1480 replacements died within a year. one guy had 5 in a year die on him. Yay Apple!

"To say that I lost my mind, I have to say that I ever had it." Now those are words to live by if I've ever head them.
I don't know why I love unhinged rants so much but this was so funny I'm actually going to lose it

I've started "watching" Louis with the audio-only "bestaudio" format option in youtube-dl, and unintentionally they became more interesting (I already know it's chair + mic + keyboard + cat...) You wouldn't believe the faces Louis pulled in this one. I also imagined alcohol.

This is the case in a lot of car repairs too. Lots of cars have OEM parts that are just shit, and popular cars often gets aftermarket replacements that's better than the OEM ones by a lot. Either someone just produce a better part for that specific car, or someone finds out that a part from another car will fit and work fine with no issues. I just talked to a local enthusiast about wanting to start manufacturing of better rear bearings on our vans, cause the OEM solution is pretty shit.

thicker cable is bad unless the conductors are also larger and/or the difference is made up with anti friction material
copper and plastic expand at different rates and if embedded in thicker plastic it will pull the strands apart in the heat cycling
