- Patti Lupone playing a loud, brash, and crazy Momma Rose! Patti may not be the best actress, per se, but she is definitely a hardcore performer. [3.25.2008]
No copyright infringement intended. I didn't film this. For entertainment purposes, only.
The person making this video was taking her life into her hands.
+Steve Jump - you Know it. ;-)
And I'm glad they did. I never would've been able to see this otherwise haha
Oh, it even made the news: ruclips.net/video/43mB4QuXGTE/видео.html
I was there the night she stopped and freaked on the photographer and refused to continue until he was thrown out...
Will K Oof I would pay Hamilton amount prices to see that.
HOW DID SOMEONE GET AWAY WITH A CAMERA ON PATTI?! OMFG I AM SO GLAD YOU DIDN'T GET KICKED OUT.
Omg ikr
THIS alone would have been worth the price of the ticket.
It was!
This is an incredible performance. She's having a breakdown while singing. Best interpretation of the character I've ever seen.
even better than bette midlers? i dunno.
Of course she's Patti LuPone
Yes Arthur Laurents who wrote the original book (script) for Gypsy said the song was a nervous breakdown set to music. Patti understood that perfectly. I've seen seven actresses do this character, and really well, but Lupone really nailed it
@@olegayguynycAngela Lansbury was the first to do the nervous breakdown and when she finishes she bows to the audience in her head as the song is called roses turn so she’s imaging having the turn of the spotlight to an audience that isn’t there and if you see her perform it it’s actually pretty scary
The fact that she is having a mental breakdown during the performance shows how much she really studied the character of rose(who in real life was a murderer; yes it’s based off a real person) and the line mama has to let go really makes sense and sticks with you with this performance. This is the best mama rose ever!!!!
she wasn’t a murderer, she just was a bad mother
@@timtobi942 actually, Rose allegedly shot a woman that flirted with her husband. The police ruled it a suicide, but several reports say otherwise.
You're damn lucky she didn't see you recording this!!
HAHAHAHAHA
Aubrey Hart Does she have problems with people recording her performances
That is an understatement!!!! hahahahaha
No stage performer likes a screen lighting up in the middle of a performance (video camera, phone, whatever other electronic device there is) because it distracts the actors/ruins the theatre experience for other audience members, so some go to the extent of calling out members of the audience for being inconsiderate. However, Patti LuPone goes one step further - she has been known to confiscate the phones of audience members who text during shows, and reprimanding them in front of a 1,000 seat house.
True I would be scared shitless if patti called me out like she has other people omg
Patti Lupone's version is so raw and emotional! Best version in my opinion.
I couldn't agree more!
Hear, hear!
Watch Imelda Staunton and let me know what you think 😀
victor dunson I think Imelda Staunton is the best, if not THE best Mama Rose to date in Broadway history. I've seen many Roses, but hers! Oh my gosh, the desperation, the anger, the betrayal, the sorrow, the lost look in her eyes took my breath away. Truly the most quintessential Mama Rose.
Patti is good but Imelda to me is just AMAZING!
"I thought you did it for me, Mama" is a critical line in that scene. Louise has been saving that up for just such a confrontation with her mother. It has to be painful enough to ignite "Rose's Turn," which it does here.
The descent into anger, hatred and mania is beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
So true
No matter which actress you prefer in the role, each one brings something different to Rose. Merman and Bette had that fun camp factor. Bernadette showed off that overwhelming need to be loved and accepted. Tyne, Angela and even Betty Buckley did something unique for the part. For me, I love this darker version of Gypsy. Patti's interpretation hinted that that maybe Rose was bipolar or suffering from some mental illness which accounts for her overwhelming behavior to push her kids into the limelight. In this age of medication and personality disorders, I wouldn't put it past Gypsy Rose Lee's mother to be diagnosed with any of things.
The show was meant to be about Rose not Gypsy. Rose was the picture of the controlling stage mother. She was one twisted sister who killed one of her lovers making a pass at an adult Gypsy. She shot June's first husband but he survived. She was arrested for another shooting. I think the Lupone interpretation of Rose was spot on.
i agree completely.
Susan Fowler Crazy how Gypsy Rose Blanchard is an actual case of a controlling mother too. 0.0
In the theatre, when she sang "Mama's got to let go", I thought a fire alarm went off, she was so loud. Never to be repeated. I saw this 5 times.
I had the thrill of seeing this performance - the air was electric. As someone has noted, "Rose's Turn" is a nervous breakdown set to music; an upbeat version would be ridiculous. What a crime that moments like this exist only on snippets of sneaked video. I wish producers would think of posterity and make professional films of shows. Some years ago a silent snippet of film appeared that is the only known recording of Fred and Adele Astaire dancing, taken by a boy who sneaked a camera into the theater.
This show was based off of real people. In real life, Rose murdered someone. Patti didn't perform Rose, she was Rose. Her acting was honest and I think she's the first person to dig deeper than just an angry, jealous, stage mother.
I agree. But I also think that Angela Lansbury’s version (although not completely accurate to the person) is extremely interesting and entertaining and differs wildly from someone like Ethel Merman because she’s not JUST angry all the time.
I saw this opening night. Incredible. Patti plays it right: Rose is a sick Narcissist, and to her, her children are just extensions of herself. The rage is completely on point. There is so much truth in Patti's performance. Shatteringly great.
She's scary as F***. So damn good. She perfected this role!
scary.
How can anyone not like this? Patti obviously portrays Rose as a sick and twisted and insecure woman and that's what this son conveys
Until I saw THIS performance, I never liked this song because sonically it's just not pleasant, especially in comparison to "Everything Coming Up Roses". It's so dissonant and disjointed that I just didn't get it. The first time I saw this number was when Bernadette on the Tony's and I just came away thinking she is really sexy for a woman in her 50s; it did not make want to find out more.
BUT here it all makes sense. This woman is crazy! And not in that cute, wacky way like Phoebe Buffay. She is clinically insane and she's unraveling. The dissonance is jarring and unsettling, but now it makes sense: I realize that nice-sounding things don't make you uncomfortable. I got that feeling you get when you're out in public and see ACTUAL, real-life examples of a person suffering from true mental illness.
+CDawg she's not crazy, she's just bitter and angry and has just realized that she's the real loser in the game of life. no husband, estranged kids...
Lupone was ferocious and brilliant. I saw the show twice...
+Jacquie Tellalian I disagree. I believe the character was written by Arthur Laurents and played here by Patti as insane. Also, being bitter and angry doesn't preclude mental illness.
I saw the show with Ms. Lupone and nope, she's definitely not insane. she's the classic stage mother who's ambition and drive for her own show-biz aspirations now only lives vicariously through her children. whether she's insecure or had no real talent of her own, Mama Rose's breakdown at the end serves as a lesson to all dreamers that you should never ignore those passions in life that give you joy, because one day, it WILL be too late. like they say in "Hamilton", "I'm not going to give up MY shot"!
Thank you for this. I agree with every single thing you say. Patti's version of Mama Rose is clearly bi-polar, a condition she developed by hiding her true, artistic self inside for her entire life and by seeing her daughters succeed in everything she's always wanted to do in life, but couldn't because she had no one supporting her. The success of her daughter Gypsy Rose Lee doesn't fulfil her in the slightest as she expected, it makes her burn with jealousy and eventually burst into a huge meltdown which is portrayed as a song.
I'm not sure she's as bi-polar as just generally hysterical and desperate. I've always thought of Patti Lupone's rendition significantly more desperate than Bernadette Peters (these are the only 2 people I've seen preform it) Her's seemed more delusional, for instance, when B.P. sung "you either have it. Or you've had it" she seems to believes she `has it` where as P.L seems just seems so desperate to `have it` that she needs to believes she does to keep going, but this is all only my take on it, i's sure there are plenty of people significantly more qualified than I am that you disagree with me.
Patti is a beast. A force of nature and an absolute legend. Can't wait to see her live this august
Absolutely! The word that came to mind while watching this was FEROCIOUS.
She is the only Rose I've seen to make perfect use of those "mama" mumbles at 3:33
That, ladies and gentlemen, is called "NAILING" a performance!
Too many MRs perform this song as one note/color/flavor, but, not Miss Lupone.
This part gave her all of the crayons in the box, and she's coloring outside of the lines, all the while, maintaining perfect control.
That's an artist!
Thanks for posting.:)
Best performance ever
This is probably the bet performance I have ever seen. Patti is just so real. She displays the the hatred, sarcasm, and defiance of this song while also displaying the fear and oblivion while maintaining an amazing use of vocal technique. Brava Patti!
Just my opinion, but regardless of the amount of scenery she chewed up during this performance, can you imagine the energy and talent it takes to do this 8 shows a week!
Steve W I read she only did six.
I completely agree with everything you said, but the irony here is that Patti is revered as the most gifted and technically sound vocal talent of her generation, in addition to being one of the most evocative stage actors alive.
Roses Turn is an UGLY song. For those who think it's supposed to be done prettily and cute is WRONG. You have to basically split your soul in half to perform this song correctly.
Yeah most definitely. I'm playing this at my old high school and hollyyy coww it's such a TWISTED song. Even musically on sheets there's a part where there's three different dissonant key signatures playing at the same time. Hands down, a soul splitting song, and strangely enough my most favorite.
iamtonyoutcast Like Chris Colfer. He was practically screaming his head off xD
iamtonyoutcast
It may be an ugly song but its supposed to be SANG not shouted.
Chris Colfwr
+MegaHatLady "SUNG"
her version is how i imagine this song being performed yes yes yes
I've watched this video religiously during COVD-19
Not the best actress per se? What? This Julliard educated star at home equally in plays as musicals? The first american to lead the Royal Shakespeare Company and win an Olivier award in the process?
I actually think this video showcases her acting skills more than anything, haha
This scene is arguably, the most iconic moment in all modern musical theatre. I’ve never seen anything like it. Astounding
This performance actually scares me. You can feel the decent into madness the entire time, just tearing into your soul deeper each moment.
1:44 my heart dropped she looked right at he camera for a second there
"may not be the best actress"
are you kidding me you just put this video beside "not the best actress"
really
Simply stunning. A shattering, harrowing, soul-rending interpretation. And having just watched this same song, also performed powerfully and memorably by Bernadette Peters and Imelda Staunton, I would pick this as my favorite. Patti simply IS Mama Rose. Not that Staunton wasn't brilliant, I simply found her frequently unpleasant in a way I found sometimes off-putting. And I know the character is far from pleasant, but Patti brings a charisma to the part which takes the curse off the character's more shrill and abrasive aspects. However, Staunton's raw honesty and surprisingly effective range -- both vocally and emotionally -- are impressive indeed. Bernadette, however, I felt was somehow too small and vulnerable to truly inhabit the totality of Mama Rose; almost as though a needy, damaged child were dressing up in her mother's clothes. However, I can't take deny the power of the raw and honest emotion which surges through her electrifying 'Rose's Turn', making it very moving despite her not being ideally cast. But, with Patti Lupone I feel like I'm getting the whole brassy, bossy, commanding, increasingly unstable package.
damn, this version is INCREDIBLE!!
HOLY TONY AWARDS!!! WOW!!!!! She is amazing!!!! Took on this role and really did it justice! One of my favorite divas! :)
Rose
Here she is, boys!
Here she is, world!
Here's Rose!
Curtain up!
Light the lights!
Play it, boys!
Ya either got it, or ya ain't.
And, boys, I got it!
Ya like it?
Well, I got it!
Some people got it and make it pay.
Some people can't even give it away.
This people's got it
and this people's spreadin' it around!
You either have it
or you've had it!
Hello, everybody! My name is Rose! What's yours?
How do you like them eggrolls, Mr. Goldstone?
Hold your hats and hallelujah.
Mama's gonna show it to you.
Ready or not, shhh, here comes Mama.
Mama's talkin' loud.
Mama's doin' fine.
Mama's gettin' hot.
Mama's goin' stong.
Mama's movin' on.
Mama's all alone.
Mama doesn't care.
Mama's lettin' loose.
Mama's got the stuff.
Mama's lettin' go.
Mama?
Mama's got the stuff.
Mama's gotta move.
Mama's gotta go.
Mama? Mama?
Mama's gotta let go.
Why did I do it?
What did it get me?
Scrapbooks full of me in the background.
Give 'em love and what does it get ya?
What does it get ya?
One quick look as each of 'em leaves you.
All your life and what does it get ya?
Thanks a lot and out with the garbage,
They take bows and you're battin' zero.
I had a dream.
I dreamed it for you, June.
It wasn't for me, Herbie.
And if it wasn't for me
then where would you be,
Miss Gypsy Rose Lee?
Well, someone tell me, when is it my turn?
Don't I get a dream for myself?
Starting now it's gonna be my turn.
Gangway, world, get off of my runway!
Starting now I bat a thousand!
This time, boys, I'm taking the bows and
everything's coming up Rose!
Everything's coming up roses!
Everything's coming up roses
this time for me!
For me! For me! For me! For me! For me!
For me! Yeah!
I saw this on Broadway with Patti Lupone. I've now been attending Broadway shows since 1997. This was the first and only time I saw a show stopped in the middle of the show (in the middle of the act) for a standing ovation. There were (and are) no words to fully describe the experience of this performance live.
I was there and this performance was unparalleled. The entire theater leaped to its feet screaming and stamping their feet. It went on and on. You want a definition of "show stopper?" Here she is boys.
Not be the best actress...? What makes a good actress, I ask. She's phenomenal
David Sanchez she's. Great I agree
Stellar, gut-busting performance. LuPone leaves all others in the dust.
This is even better than the cast recording - sensational
To all the people passing judgement on Patti's singing and acting ability:
When YOU graduate from Juilliard, have a career spanning decades, headlining Broadway shows, with gutsy, bold, fierce, commanding interpretations, and establish a reputation where people call you THE [insert your last name here]...THEN you can talk.
Until you accomplish what she has, you can armchair criticize all you want.
Not the bast actress? This take is brilliant! Nice touches. I've never seen a psychotic break like this for the song.
This is what happens when a great artist lives a role. I've seen a lot of wonderful Roses on stage, including Lansbury and Daley. But Lupone takes it to another level. Cagney said that acting was placing your two feet on the stage and telling the truth. Ms Lupone tells the truth.
THAT'S what you call an 11 o'clock number!
HELL YA
Patti is a force of nature . Utter brilliance ! I love that so many amazing women have played this role. Each bring there unique genius to it. Thank you patti
Honestly no one can give a performance up to her level
lovesite1967 See Imelda Staunton.. she is the BEST Rose ever, currently in the new london production.....
+JustJames Imelda was unstoppable
I'm convinced Patti is the best Mama Rose I've seen
Saw this in New York with Patti! Realized at the end of this number I had not breathed. The audience was on its feet before the last nite was finished!
I feel like Patti's focus was that feeling where you keep failing, with no roads left you sort of lose your mind and yourself. You become frantic and crazy and start screaming and breaking things. I feel that was her approach. It's so raw and emotional and it resonates with the feeling of losing a role.
When a perfect talent with perfect control goes over the top, this is what you get, it's breathtaking and just what you'd expect from Patti.
And this is from a man who has seen all of these amazing women perform many times each throughout the years, so there's that! However, your comment was extremely well put and I respect your opinion. Gypsy's Mama Rose just happens to be the one iconic Broadway role that 5 of the greatest performers of all time have portrayed, and were all nominated/won Tony's for. But when other legends like Sondheim, Streep and Lansbury say Patti's is the best Mama Rose they've ever seen, that's hard to beat.
Steve I agree one million percent! I was in the front row when I saw it and was just completely blown away.... speechless really... she was magnificent.
3:00-3:08 is so creepy...
The BEST... I was lucky enough to see her and she was electric! Never be another as good.
Lucky to have seen this live….. brilliant performance….. I cried! Felt every ache and despair in her voice!,
I still laugh out loud at "may not be the best actress". Absurd. She is one of the BEST actresses. Period.
This has got to be the most inspirational performance I've ever seen in my life. This was the first Broadway show I had the pleasure of attending. Miss Lapune had me leaving this show in tears, it was so incredible XD!!
Saw this Oct. 2008. Incredible performance. Great lead trumpet playing.
she hands down is the best person to have EVER played rose
She won EVERY single award that a person could possibly win when doing a Broadway show.....and it was based on.. not only this brilliant number...but her entire interpretation of Rose and many other numbers. Pure brilliance.
The best singer, actress, talent and Mama Rose, Evita and Helena Rubinstein.....she is Patti f diva rock star. LOVE....HER...ALWAYS.
A triumph. She won every award for this. No one of her generation can touch her in this role. She was built for it. Incredible
I beg to differ....She is a GREAT actress...I saw her long ago at UCSB in a play ..and she was a very young woman...I was stunned at her performance...she stood out like a definite star...I KNEW she would become what she is today....FANTASTIC!
Miss LuPone is a stunning actor and singer and a sensational performer. She truly is an awesome talent. Saw her on Broadway in Evita as well. Long may she reign.
Her acting is phenomenal!!! I love this version, and Bette’s!!☺️☺️
Brilliant. One of the rare times in the Broadway theatre when a performer received a standing ovation during the show.
No one delivers a song like Patti
this is great patti kills it and obliterates everything in her path
There's no one to "blame" for not liking this performance. Some people just don't like it, which says more about spectator than it does about LuPone or Laurents.
To me, each moment is specific, invested in emotionally, and forceful in its commitment. There are some truly gutsy and disturbing moments in this performance.
LuPone chooses STORY and CHARACTER over PERFECT SINGING. She's working to capture someone who's snapped mentally & emotionally, it ain't supposed to be pretty.
Geez, people.
I saw her on Broadway. It was the best performance I've ever seen on a musical.
But she is the best actress which is why she won this little award called the Tony Award if you've ever heard of that for Best Actress :)
I don't know how the person who posted this could say she's not the best actress. She is literally *THE BEST* actress, at least in terms of this song.
Miss LuPone nails this nervous breakdown. Her version of Mama Rose is gut-wretchingly emotional. You are brilliant Patti!!!
Well, Patti is absolutely amazing no matter what anyone says, she has all the components of a Broadway legend and is also extremely nice and down to earth in person. Patti is Queen. Period.
This was simply amazing!!!!
That last note! ugh! Perfect.
Love this, the total performance.
Too bad this clip does not have THE best moment. When LuPone looked back at the audience at the very end of the show, I could not breathe. I have seen all the Roses [except Merman who was NO actress] and that moment made up for LuPone's inconsistencies and indulgences. It was astounding. Overall, no one tops Tyne Daly. Her acting was FEROCIOUS and she also inhabited the character best.
I'm sitting here on a Tuesday morning crying my little eyes out. Omg
Such a talent! Funny too heard her recently on Serius XM - My Favorite Song - interview show - she was so charming and a great raconteur!
God I wish I could watch Patti live!! 😍
Who ever took this video had guts
"Here comes Mama" = "Here's Johnny!"
I don't understand why so many people are claiming that this performance is "wooden". I think it's sheer brilliance.
I have no words for her....what a GENIUS
One of her best!
I personally like hers and bette midlers performance both great imo
Again, she is one of the most revered and beloved acting talents of the past century. Just listen to her peers and other legends of today speak about her. Not only did she graduate with honors from Julliard, but the likes of Sondheim, Streep, Kline and Lansbury have called her the great theater actress of her generation. You need to familiarize yourself with her vast repertoire over all 3 mediums and her historic reputation before you sum up her worth. P.S.- I actually love your Joan analogy ;)
Thank you so much for posting this! I never got to see her perform this live, and listening to the recording does not show her facial expressions, gestures and body language. I saw Tyne Daly, Linda Lavin and Bernadette Peters do this number live, and I saw the Bette Midler and Rosalind Russell movies. I wish I could see the Angela Lansbury (which sounded a lot like LuPone''s-- like a mental breakdown) and Ethel Merman versions of this number. It can be interpreted in so many ways. That's why I think it's one of the greatest numbers in musical theater history.
I too, have seen many Gypsys...but Lansbury in London was the knockout.......and soon we have Imelda Staunton at Chichester...judging by her Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney she will really be something great
My school did a performance of this and it was so RAW and beautiful.
I love you Patti Lupone! Haven't seen you tweet lately ;-(
Best version of mama rose ever. Long live Patty LaPone
This is my energy, waiting for my Covid-19 vaccine.
This and imelda's is rose. What a performance by both actresses, breathtaking
amazing. She is actually an actress who sings, and her voice is amazing but her performances are spectacular.
Lupone’s exaggerated facial contortions are what make this work. You believe she’s lost it. Truly a Legend!
This was just IT!!!!! Tony so deserved!
"Patti may not be the best actress" what
Just, outrageously beautiful.
Had the great thrill of seeing this performance - wow! I think she most completely performs this, as someone described the song, as a nervous breakdown set to music.
